The difference between before in the footwells and after is pretty amazing. Definitely doing a bang up job on this restoration. I would definitely remove all the old & bad sound dampening, especially since you found that really bad spot behind it in the drivers footwell.

Wow, BMW has amazing parts availability. I can't find parts for cars from the 2000s much less 2010s for some German and Japanese cars. With those prices though its somewhat not surprising, but still. I don't know why there isn't a 3d printed manufacturer out there that specializes in these tiny plastic parts for all brands. I have seen individuals and businesses making specific parts, but no one is doing it en mass. Its not like they would have to have a lot of stock, just a lot of upfront design work.

I know right, its great... just expensive. I'm sure soon there will be someone making decent copies with printers but yeah, I'm yet to find them.

Good to see a new video. My E30 fuel tank rusted right through and had to be replaced. I remember getting a good aftermarket one back in the day, if they are still available I would just replace it. With that amount of rust present, you only have the filter to rely on to stop debris from getting into the injectors. It may already have happened and possibly is a reason for any rough running. I don't just know which injector is in your car, but they normally have an internal mesh filter with about 8 or 9 micron holes, you don't need much to block them.
@RestoreIt
@RestoreIt 2 ай бұрын
Thanks, Bob. Great advice and good point on the injectors maybe being slightly clogged. I'll check them out in the next episode. And as for the fuel tank, I'll have a look now, I have seen aftermarket ones in the past, so that might be the way to go... Cheers!
@MrBlaadieblaa
@MrBlaadieblaa 2 ай бұрын
@@RestoreItnever attempt to restore a fuel tank if it involves welding. There is a real risk of igniting the fuel vapor that is impossible to get out of the tank. The only way to it is if you purge the tank with an inert gas before and while welding. Bottom line,: just get a new one, they are still available aftermarket for a reasonable price.

there is a idle switch at the throttlebodie. You should hear a click when you open the throttle.
@baba0rum

Also start the engine and remove the oil cap. If the idle doesnt change that much > big air leak. M20 engines will struggle to idle if there is no leaks while the cap off.

Don’t know what make of sanding belts you’re using but if you use 3M ones they don’t snap easily and will wear down to the backing before they let go, in my experience anyways. Expensive but worth it. And I hope BMW are watching this and are proud of themselves for their pricing policies, £9 for a tiny plastic clip!! At least Dick Turpin wore a mask! Enjoying your videos man, keep it up.

I'm using Draper 75 x 457mm belts cut into five with scissors... This is probably the problem, haha. I'll check out the 3M ones and see how they go. I know right.. £9!! Just a little more advice by way of affirmation, please don’t put yourself down regarding your welding acumen. You have improved massively and as you can see by your own observations you’re becoming a lot more neater and precise. Telling yourself and us your viewers you’re not that good will hinder your progress. You are doing absolutely fine man so just keep telling yourself that. Practice makes perfect or remember this, ‘a grinder and paint makes me the welder I ain’t’!!!! Keep at it mate. 👍🏻👍🏻

I don’t want to spoil the party but I am under the impression that you don’t know zinkprimer is never ment to be overpainted, so it’s written in all zink pimer manuals. It’s an excellent rust protector but on parts you don’t see. Zink will eventually reject the other primers because of its self sacrificial character. You see it in real life happening on lampposts, garage doors and other objects. The best primer to use on top of zink is a 2k epoxy primer, but there are no guarantees. How car manufacturers do this on galvanized chassis still remains a mystery for me but they probably use an acid based etching primer. Most carpainters don’t even know this from my experience. Good luck with your good job and if I were you I would use epoxy primers only for the visible parts and zink on invisible parts under the rear seat ore the carpet for instance.

@Dennis-eh2vx
@Dennis-eh2vx 2 ай бұрын
You are always welcome. But such an aggressive etching primer is actually not available for private individuals. So you have to use a good 2K epoxy. And make sure you scratch the zink surface to insure the best adhesion.
