Suns Fire Frank Vogel: Could the Lakers Re-Hire Him? Especially if Phoenix Hires Budenholzer?

Locked On Lakers

Күн бұрын

Thursday was a busy one on the NBA coaching carousel, which is obviously a matter of import for the Lakers.
First, Charlotte hired Charles Lee, a top assistant on Boston's staff and long seen as a name to watch in coaching circles. He was on LA's list, but not seen as a priority candidate by most reports. Meanwhile, in Phoenix, Mike Budenholzer is set to become the Suns' next head coach, again, taking a name of interest off LA's list. And why is Budenholzer heading there? Because former Lakers head coach Frank Vogel was canned.
So in a thin coaching market, could Vogel be a real candidate for the gig? Would the Lakers actually consider bringing him back? Should they?
What about the other guys? Would Vogel make more sense than a first time head coach (Adelman, Nori) or a first time any kind of coach (JJ Redick)? Is there a philosophical through line that can be identified that runs through any of these guys? And what about internal support? The Lakers, of late, haven't done a great job of supporting their coaches through challenging times. They actively undercut Vogel, and don't seem to have worked to try and smooth out the issues internally when Darvin Ham hit some real bumps this season.
Are you confident in the process?
HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: Frank Vogel is back on the market. Should the Lakers inquire?
SEGMENT 2: How Vogel is an inkblot test that helps contextualize every other option.
SEGMENT 3: Do the Lakers have the right processes in place to support any hire?

If I'm Frank, I'm asking for an absolute crap ton of power within the organization in terms of roster build and what not. I am of the belief that we never should have gotten rid of him and we should have built around his strengths as a coach (ie. running it back with what we had in 2020). I truthfully blame and always have blamed Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss for what has happened and where we're at.

The Lakers should hire 2 head coaches. Reddick and Phil Jackson would be a great coaching duo. Phil Jackson could sit in a suite with a headset and talk to JJ, who will have an earbud in. They're both brilliant basketball minds and they could accommodate and comfort Lebron when he has a temper tantrum on the court.

I don’t think Stotts is a bad coach. I actually said the opposite. The problem is his age. He’s almost 67, and if you’re looking for a candidate who might stick around for several years, he’s too old for that, realistically speaking. I’d rather the Lakers not do this again in a few years, if possible. So that’s my rationale. Appreciate you watching. AK

Vogel as head coach is probably the best option. Why not be innovative and take a football approach. No head coach or Vogel as head coach. As assistants, add a defensive and offensive coach. Add Rondo and Redick split the workload and the responsibility and see who shines. Maybe it works and they decide to keep the new format 💯🔥👍

JJ Redick is my choice. the most important thing is communication(as player shit the bed). His Sean Mcvay vibe, may translate well to the next generation of players. Coaching in today's NBA is not leadership, it is collaboration. Old school or vet coaches are often set in their ways, and what worked decades ago may not work know. JJ comes with his own perspective not molded by other coaches. He already shows a rapport with Lebron and Austin Reeves. We get a glimpse of his Basketball knowledge in commentating and his podcast, this gives us as Laker fans, a glimpse behind the curtain.

This may be a hot take but I think it would be great for them to hire Rondo. I understand that he doesn't have the coaching experience to be hired as a head coach right away especially for a team trying to contend. I also get the narrative around former players who don't turn out to be great coaches. But if Lebron plans to stay, the Lakers really don't need a proven head coach. Spo was a first time head coach when he coached the Heat , Ty Lue was a first time head coach when he won with the Cavs, no disrespect to Frank but that 2020 Lakers team was gonna win it regardless. They just need a coach that their star players would respect and will make the right adjustments necessary to win. He was also well-liked by young players wherever team he goes since he is a great mentor for them so even if Lebron leaves or retires, he would still be a great hire for them when they start a rebuilding process. Oh and he is one of the smartest players in the league, outsmarting great coaches like Brad, Doc or even Frank. But if the Lakers would hire him he needs a former head coach/coaches on his staff like Frank had in 2020 to show him the ropes of being a head coach.

First I think I speak on the behalf of most fans when I say this coaching search is kind of depressing. There's no one available, from a fan perspective, that's instilling confidence (and that was before Bud and Lee were hired). That doesn't mean we won't end up with someone great though. The reality is, coaching is harder than scouting a player because of how situational most coaches are. There aren't many GREAT coaches out there. And even with the good coaches, they may only be good in the situation that they are currently in. This makes the coaching search very difficult for any franchise. Second thought about this coaching thing is how irritated I am with these type of discussions. Not because people aren't allowed to ask these questions or that it's a bad thing to talk about process but all of these conversations feel so incomplete. It is factual that the Lakers have made mistakes with hiring coaches and it is true we're up there as having the most turnover in recent years. BUT I get very annoying that we aren't acknowledging that the fact that the franchise just did what everybody wanted! Everybody said the Lakers made the right call and hired the right candidate. They empowered him, they didn't fire him mid season of his second year even though we all wanted that, they let him hire his own staff, (which was probably a detriment to Darvin), they learned from micromanaging Frank Vogel. It didnt work out but they had a process and most approved of the process. I'm not saying that bad stuff cant be discuss but I don't think this gets acknowledged very often. I also think some of the expectations arent as simple as people make them sound. The opinion that the Lakers should have a coach and live within that coaches ethos regardless of the players doesnt completely make sense. There aren't many teams that are doing that because the modern NBA doesn't keep a coach for that long. hate it or love it that's the environment that we live in. Player movement and star moving hasn't just affected team building, it's affected coaches. There are only a few organizations that have had a coach 5 plus years. That should tell you a lot. The game has changed and free agency has changed things. It's hard to have the same coach throughout all of that. Most franchises don't build their culture around a coach because there aren't many coaches worth building around! If you factor in teams like the Lakers that always chasing stars, you're more likely to have different coaches. Why? 1.Because your roster is often changing. 2. Star player might dislike the current coach and the fear of losing said star results in the coach getting fired. 3. Higher expectations for star studded teams resulting in coaches being on the hot seat. 4. Coaches are more disposable when teams under achieve. With the combined effect of a franchise in the star business and the hit or miss nature of coaching, you're more likely to have turnover than not. Viewing things through this frame, it's more likely to have a coach for 4 year or less than 5 years or more. Take note that the non-Pop and non-Spoelstra teams typically keep their coach long enough to establish themselves as a contender and then they fire the coach and go with someone else that they think can get them over the hump. You have some success stories like Mike Malone who got to stay for the complete rise, but most are let go of after the development stage has ended and the win now stage begins. See the Sixers. Same coach during trust the process and then multiple switches since winning became the priority. I just think yes the Lakers have to be better, but looking at the last few coaches, 2 out of the three got the thumbs up until it crashed and burned (Luke and Ham). I dont think its that they dont care who the coach is, i just think they think star first, coach second. We all want the Lakers to have more stability even if it's not Phil or Pat Riley stability, i think we all would like a good 5-year stretch. I understand and want that to, but I think it's important to discuss some of the complexities that are going on here. The Lakers' real mistake is that they dropped the ball on the one candidate that could have been the coach for 5 years; Ty Lue. I think if they get another opportunity for a guy like that, they need to jump on it and not be cheap about it. Based on the history and prestige, the Lakers absolutely SHOULD have a coach in the world of Pop, Kerr, and Riley. Hopefully, we get that at some point, but it's not as simple as getting what you want. Great coaches aren't growing on trees.

Frank is so overrated. I believe Kidd was more responsible for the title than Vogel. All reports were that it was Kidd who had the relationship with the players. Remember the Lakers forced Vogel to hire Kidd and Hollins. The cracks started to show when they left. Even before Russ got there Vogel had a few incidents with players like Dennis. Not to mention his terrible offensive schemes and rotations. Vogel is a solid defensive assistant and nothing more.

That is not true about why they got Westbrook. It has zero to with how long Lebron was going to be in the league and everything to do with James Harden going to the nets. And James got scared and started playing GM. And went and sold them on the idea "he" could make it work. There's no twists. It's that simple. And the fact they wanted Lebron to sign an extension.

I don't think the Lakers want to run a five wide out again and get the same product. Nobody underneath the rim. Nobody knowing what to do. People just dribbling the ball and shooting it. Not even worth it behind the three-point line and then missing it and having the worst 3-point percentage just to have Frank Vogel get a payday because he's not going to teach you how to make a basket

Rob linka made a lot of open errors in front of his face. He should have hired Jason Kidd and just let it be but instead he wanted to stay with Frank Vogel or waste his time with him and hire another coach who was just like

I'm going to say this if the Lakers do not have a point guard running a system and not LeBron James they're not going to be going anywhere. Players are stagnant out there on the court. Just like the Warriors are. When Steph Curry is running around, they're just stagnant. They're not doing anything. They're not cutting. They're not going underneath the baskets. They're not cutting vertical to give wall handler a screen. They're not doing anything

I think to be honest with you if they don't hire a player's coach who actually played in the NBA and knows how to run an offensive system and knows how to draw up off into plays and knows how to put players accountable on playing defense by showing them how to get in front of somebody how to box out how to take a charge, how to put the other two out of trouble within 5 or 7 minutes so they could take over the fourth quarter by having the best players on the other team sit on the bench. It's just going to be another horrible coach and a horrible decision. Hopefully they hire the right person out

The Podcast Elite live in their own bubble, why in the world would Lakers rehire Vogel??? I’m not knocking Vogel, but been there, done that. He is a good coach just like Ham, but Beal trade was dumb redundant and a coach killer. Ham had a backcourt nicknamed “Vanilla Ice” that says it all right there😐👍🏿

To begin, the “Podcast Elite?” That’s not an actual thing. But also, why are we living in a bubble wondering if the Lakers would consider re-hiring Vogel? If the Lakers are putting any premium at all on head coaching experience, Vogel is among the few candidates to choose from, period. There aren’t many realistic or practical options out there. Especially if Bud gets hired quickly. It absolutely makes sense to ask the question. AK

@@LockedOnLakers Podcast Elite is a thing I'm just one of the few who notice the obvious group think. The group think that sees Max Christie as more than an average NBA talent and the ones that keep allowing the Lakers to keep holding on to the DLo's of the world. As for "just asking questions" ... it worked, I clicked on, you're welcome.

@@Oberonz1 Okay, by "the podcast elite," I thought you meant it like people talk about the "elites" culturally as if Brian and I were sequestered in our ivory towers of prominence. While I wish I had that kind of money and influence, unfortunately, that's not the case. Haha. And yeah, always leave comments. We really do read them. AK

Hiring Frank Vogel would be like hiring Darvin Hammer again. What are you doing to LeBron? James, you're only giving him someone who has no experience of playing basketball. That's hilarious. Like I said before, it's like having you two people coach the Lakers. It sounds funny

No on Vogel. Only because we've been there. I'll say this. Y'all don't piss me off. The misinformation is what pisses me off. Because what you in the media do is take a rumors that you obviously know where it came from as law. You only hear the owners complaining. Never have you heard the players complain about Mark. That's the fact. But what I was going to say was I think they hired Ham as a babysitter. He was good with players, the tension in the locker room was on life support, and that's what they needed. Hopefully they get a guy with a real game plan and not fancy slogans. If the MF you talking to start throwing out slogans!! Please say no 🤣🤣🤣

If I were Vogel I won't be coming back even if Lakers wants him! It is sad how the management just replace him it's because it doesn't work, great team become great because regardless of their failure they hold on! IMO it boils down to picking a player that suits and having Bon with the team is very difficult.:-(

Laker fans are going berserk! Talking about a different franchise and how bad it is while their own is a clown show! Hiring back Vogel who you kicked out because of a certain diva, then he fails with other superstars in another team? Not good dudes! Running out of coaches, running out of players to trade in...I wonder why! And I also wonder do the phoenix fans laugh at your "organization" which feels more like a chaotic laughing stock at the moment! And you are just a resign of a max three year deal away to become a total circus show for decades to come!
