The story is a love triangle, set in World War II-era in Thailand, and depicts the star-crossed romance between Kobori (Nadech Kugimiya) a Imperial Japanese Navy officer and Angsumalin (Amarawadee Decabales) a Thai woman who is involved with the Free Thai resistance.

A Japanese soldier's fate is either win or die trying. My great grandpa is a Japanese Brigadier general who took part in the Pacific Campaign and eventually meet my great grandma in Cambodia. They lived together for a few years and got my grandma then he moved to strengthen Iwo Jima or Okinawa if I remember correctly. We haven't heard of him even though the war ended. After all years, she learned that he's either committed Seppuku or Harakiri since he's a high rank general.

The Korean dramas are internationalized because the korean audience is very small in Korea. So Korean movie productions have to go global in order to make money. The problem is Korean movies and dramas have become so similar because they try to make everyone happy. S they begin to lose their attraction by international audience. The Thai movie industries have a huge audience in Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos because these 3 countries share similar culture with Thai Culture in the center.

OMG! I totally say the same thing. In Koo Kum I became a Bie fan! LOL The lakorn is very good and IS more detailed like you said, but the story line of these remakes/original are just to depressing for me because I got VERY emotional at the end. But besides that its an amazing movie. :)

Thai lakorns have very unique elements that make them strict Thai style. Going international means to try everything to make everyone from different countries happy, and that will make Thai lokorns lose their uniqueness. When you see a Hong Kong movie, you know right away that it's from Hong Kong because of its style, action, cinematic elements. Same thing with Japanese movies/dramas; they are uniquely Japanese, and that's what make them attractive to viewers. NO COPY OR PLAGIARISM.

Koo Kum ended when Kobori die, leaving his wife and son behind. Now there is a CONTINUATION of Koo Kum that focuses on the life of the wife and the half Japanese-Thai son. The son grew up and also got killed during the social chaos in Bangkok during the cultural transformation of Thailand in the 1950s-60s. This Thai Koo Kum drama is just SAD all the way to the end. The Japanese father Kobori generation to the son generation both ended in TRAGEDY. DON'T WATCH IF YOU ARE A CRY BABY.

you don't have to understand what they say in order to feel them or follow the story. the human emotion is very powerful. use your imagination and judgement and watching a foreign movies with a language you don't understand will be alot more fun. English subtitle is good but it will RUIN the suspense. Thai dramas and movies do not have English subtitle for a good reason, and that is to engage the audience emotionally and force to audience to use their imagination skills.

true to that. think thai lakorn should be international like korean dramas. all korean dramas comes out like english subs. but since thai lakorns are not so well known they should at least release out the popular lakorns with english subs like koo kum.

Yoichi (Kobori 's son) survive in the original novel , but the director who make Koo kum 2 change the story (just like 2gether director do in 2gether ep 12) but Koo kum 2 is not as famous as Koo kum 1 , so it's only one version for the foreigner to watch... but I still hope that someday I can watch Koo kum 2 make by other director , and that director not corrupt the story just like the lated one... another little spoil : in the novel at the last scene Yoichi play shamisen to lullaby his mother and when Angsumalin doze off , Kobori come and take her with him ,then Kobori and Angsumalin agree to watch over and protect Yoichi together at the milky way...

You can't really say that because the past version and the present version have always been with a typical Thai actor who doesn't look Japanese enough then. And yes I do agree that the producers should of picked someone who is half Japanese-Thai or someone who is actually Japanese to play to role.

yeah, I'm actually watching that version right now. it's really good...i never very care for Bie unitl now. I think the lakorn is better because it's more detailed. compared to the movie its good, but a little choppy, don't you think so?

Well considering the time this event took place- japanese occupation of SE Asia. I'm sure there weren't a lot of mixed looking japanese men on the forefront of war. It's just being realistic. One thing about American cinema, or western cinema in general, you'll notice are their appropriate casting of characters. They don't cast a tall handsome perfectly tan half mixed man to play in a movie that takes place in the colonial times. It's just not appropriate casting.

I don't agree about American cinema.. there are a few movies I've watched that have another Asian race for a thai character that bothers me since I speak both thai and English. It annoys me so much. Like, have you seen Hangover 2? Where the nerd friend matrieds the "Thai" woman and her dad speaks thai to her in the movie but she speaks only English..due to the fact that she is Korean or something but she played a thai character. And the movie Anna and the king or the king and I, I don't remember the name exactly but I do remember the king spoke broken thai and it was so horrible to watch. I couldn't finish the movie.. this movie looks cute either way though. I'm going to try to watch it. I wont let his looks bother me. The American one used to bother me but now I'm just going with it..

KOO KUM DRAMA HAS MANY REMAKES SINCE THE 90'S. THE ORIGINAL VERSION IS THE BEST. KOO KUM DRAMA HAS BEEN ADOPTED INTO MOVIE AS WELL. THE MOVIE FORM IS NOT VERY COMPLETE OF THE STORY. YOU HAVE TO WATCH THE DRAMA TO GET THE COMPLETE STORY. THERE IS ALSO A LESS WELL-KNOWN CONTINUATION OF KOO KUM WHICH FOCUS ON THE LIFE OF KOBORI'S JAPANANESE-THAI SON, TOO. I DON'T REMEMBER THE EXACT NAME SINCE I WATCHED IT SO LONG AGO.

I watched this movie on viu Indonesia, and I think the girl doesn't have good chemistry with Nadech. First, for me, an actor is good if he makes me believe he’s actually going through whatever his character is going through, I think Nadech can express his emotions through his eyes, i love his role.

THIS 2013 VERSION IS NOT GOOD BECAUSE THE GUY WHO PLAYS THE JAPANESE GENERAL KOBORI DOES NOT LOOK JAPANESE ENOUGH. HIS NAME IS NADECH AND HE LOOKS TOO TYPICAL THAI TO PLAY A JAPANESE CHARACTER. THE PRODUCER SHOULD HAVE PICKED A REAL HALF JAPANESE-THAI TO PLAY KOBORI, OR MAYBE A REAL THAI NATIONAL JAPANESE TO PLAY KOBORI.
