This is the full tutorial for "Marshlight," the first of twelve paintings in my online art series, The Square Foot Show. This tutorial will use a limited palette to teach you: how to paint a sunset sky using alla prima, make trees look backlit, block in your colours and values, how to paint grass, layering with oil paint, and mixing blacks. This is my first oil painting tutorial, and my channel will now feature both oil painting and acrylic painting tutorials for beginners and intermediate emerging artists. I'm a realistic artist with a focus on photorealism, though I sometimes veer into impressionism and tonalism. My landscape paintings are inspired by my home in beautiful Northern Ontario (specifically North Bay, though I sometimes paint the Muskoka region).
If this is your first time painting in oils, please don't be discouraged or frustrated with any setbacks! Learning a new medium takes time, and it took me a few years to become comfortable working with oils instead of acrylics. Stick with it, it's worth it!
My new course, "Painting Flowers in Acrylic," is now available, and as a special thank you for supporting my channel, you can use code KZbin25 to take $25 off at checkout! courses.mariannevanderdussen....
I hope you enjoy, feel free to connect with me and let me know how I can support you on your own artist's journey! Tag me in any completed paintings that were inspired by this video so I can enjoy your artwork.

Beautiful work painting, filming and narrating. If possible I would love to see close ups of your brush strokes. Like when you were painting the pines in the background w/a thin brush, then layering with a contrast color so that the trees stand out and differentiate with what's farthest and closest. I would also like to see a closer image of the brush tips you use and the tools that you create -(wand w/what looked to be a big q-tip looking end, so you could create straight lines w/out touching canvas). Need close ups of these tools during tutorial. Thank you for sharing your work and letting us know how you go about it. I'm not there yet but all tips and examples help. 😊

Hi Daisy! Thank you so much for your incredibly descriptive and helpful feedback! I will definitely take all of this into consideration as I make future content for this channel. I'll be improving and tweaking my setup in the months and years to come, and feedback like this helps me figure out which areas specifically to focus on. So thank you! As a side note, the giant Q-tip tool I'm using is called a Mahl stick, and is incredibly useful. I wanted to do a video just on how I made mine and use it. Essentially, it's a piece of wooden dowel with a balled up piece of paper and masking tape on the top. I use it to steady my hand when I'm working over wet areas. It's a wonderful tool!

Lovely indeed...Here is the thing...what is recommended acrylics or oil painting...What are your thoughts?

This is oil, but I do both. It really depends on the subject and your comfort level. I will always prefer oil for blendability but usually teach in acrylic because of accessibility.

Nice work Marianne. Can you clarify something for me? I'm always confused about layers in oils (i.e. fat over lean). In this painting, did you just add some Liquin into your paints at the beginning and then use the same mixtures each time you painted a new layer? If so, that would certainly simplify things rather than having to use different mediums with different ratios of oil for every layer.

Hi Chris, I actually do exactly as you say, where I use liquin straight out of the gate and paint in thin layers. I don’t tend to use impasto style, which would definitely require fat over lean, and instead just paint in thin layers with liquin. If I want a longer dry time, such as for a large sky or water, I just omit the liquin. But I don’t tend to layer that heavily with my paintings. All I do is have a small amount of liquin on my palette, then dip my brush into it and mix it into the colour I’m using. I barely use any but it’s very effective in accelerating the dry time.

@@chriswhitehouse8982 next one is acrylic, then back to oil! It’s my preferred professional medium, but I often teach in acrylic due to its accessibility!
