I sense a pattern here: Yatzee gives a more positive assessment to games when he's comparing them to the ones he's expressly bashing than he does in the review for that game.

@Silent Solitude yes, but he also pointed out a lot of the flaws and things he just didn't like. Yahtzee has expressly said he's a critic first, and focuses on the bad, so even positive reviews can vome off badly. A better example is BOTW, which he didn't praise much in the review, but was in his top 5 and he referenced fairly often in later reviews. Especially since BOTW kinda, sorta, maybe caused open-world games to become the new genre every company staryed milking.

When I was watching the trailers to this game, one thing I felt was that the entire thing didn't feel organic. The comedy, the relevancy, the attempt to be cool, it just didn't feel like it was something genuine. Instead, it felt way too forced. I think rather than "try too hard", I think terms such as "organic" and "forced" work much better in terms of this game.

***** I'm a fan of that style of game as well. On the other end of the spectrum, there are way too many games where the "dark" and "serious" tone can feel just as forced. It's just that when I play a game, regardless of what it's going for, I want it to feel genuine. For example, i'm very much looking forward to Splatoon which I feel does the whole cartoony shooter concept much better.

@Sprzina 9 жыл бұрын
RynKen Why? He's rarely wrong and doesn't really tell you whether or not to buy a game, just states the rights and wrongs of the game. Take this video for example, he mentions the Gameplay being quite enjoyable but the main focus is the general bad writing and "LOLZ@RANDOM" quirkiness the game is failing at, take from it what you will.

***** If I only took his word for it I wouldn't have tried games like The Last of Us, Demon's Souls, or Zelda: A Link Between Worlds despite them all being very enjoyable titles. His video on Demon's Souls makes it especially hard for me to trust his judgement because he didn't even get to the first boss and decided he had a good enough understanding of the game to make a video on it. I'd basically have to look for reviews on his reviews to make sure he knows what hes talking about with certain games.

***** Well, on the top of my head: SR3 and 4 werent that great, Just Cause 2 is below average without mods and the TLOU review is mostly bullshit. I like Yahtzee, but besides his top 5 games of the year, his opinions on the game dont tell me much about the game itself. He's funny but not really informative.

You really shouldnt limit yourself to only having the fun people tell you to have. Also he did say it was fun, just fun for no reason. Which it is. The onpy downside i saw was that the game was too short. Im just saying you should at least try something and decide if its shit for yourself rather than basing it on someone else's opinion else you are limiting yourself quite alot in life.

Having recently played through it I definitely get what he was going for. The characters are a lot less interesting than the mechanics they find themselves using, and way too many of the weapons just dont... well they just dont exist right for a fast paced Bloodborne tempo'd game where the core mechanic is environmental traversal. One thing I really think wasn't touched on well here was the core disconnect between the combat system and the traversal: The actual weapons. I beat the critical path + a few side missions by mostly the starting shotgun, the token revolver they gave you, the automatic rifle purchased from the shop (ahead of the actual unlock for it in the missions because they didn't pace those really well) and then another shotgun, and when I was feeling frisky I switched to the Teddy Bear RPG launcher. Let me go over a brief summary of weapons I tried and gave up on: The Record Player: Same reasons as Yahtzee, but I really don't think he homes in on why it is so bad: The game gives you a rating system for how good a weapon with between 1 and 4 stars. 1 is a terrible matchup and you should switch immediately, and 4 is the perfect response. The record players were rated 1 star for 75% of the enemies without exaggeration. Being good at fighting the token zombies isn't a selling point, especially if my starting shotgun can do the same with less effort. The Bowling Ball: They added a railgun into a game about fast paced combat. A fucking charge up railgun, without any sense of understanding the point of a sniper. The Harpoon: Same reason as the Bowling ball, but instead replace the charge up with a single hit attack that has almost no ammo. The Firework Launcher: Differentiated from the teddy bear because... it is worse. Like its radius is laughable, the actual ammo doesn't seem to do anything in a standard fight, and it fires faster, making it easier to deplete. The Boomerang: This one I tried really hard to like, but it has most of the same problems as the Record Player with none of the issues of... ammo. Like I used it whenever I ran out of other ammo types but it was always an intermediary when I was running out of options. Being the last one picked because you are still standing isn't a win. Anything that created a turret/mine: In a game about traversal, zombies need to be improved to pose a credible threat. That means they can traverse with some amount of skill, to get in your way when you are trying to land/grind your way around them. When, in the history of fuck, did area of control weapons actually matter unless you were on a TD mission. I cannot express how little help a mine in the middle of a crowded battlefield is when I need to kill everyone. I get that the point is to take out clumps, but our protagonist only has like, 10 hits from normal zombies before they are KO'd, so why am I bothering with weapons I can't control the outcome of? The turrets might theoretically be a good thing for the TD, but I only did the TD like, 5 times. I might revisit this one. Still, stationary weapons in a game centered around being light on your feet is a failure of game design. Traps, other than the freeze bouncer and the spinny blades: I went through the entire game, and only found those two to be useful. When do you use them? On one incredibly specific type of mission. What should you do for that mission? Get your rocket launcher and start throwing grenades around like you are the world's worst juggler. Traps as a concept are flawed, because a main premise of this game is combo collection, and you gain nothing but the deaths from traps. So now that that is out of the way, what would I want? I don't know. I only tried a handful of reliable weapons, as every attempt to deviate from it was met with dumb weapon choices. I would maybe try out the acid gun later, but ultimately, there is a fundamental problem: Guns that take a long time to use (in the sense of fire) should either be so powerful and rare that they instantly clear the battlefield of *everything*, they should be the only weapon type in the game to give the players a unique challenge of balancing fast paced combat with critically slow weapons, or they shouldn't exist at all. What is the point of having all these different types of weapons if I only use like, 5 and for different parts? Flame shotgun and RPG for fodder zombies, Automatic rifle for robots and raiders, Heavy pistol for anything that has a hitpoint bar. Utilize the last shotgun for when your first one runs out of ammo. If there were some guns that were intrinsically useful but clunky, like the Harpoon if it actually did something against the zombies with health bars, then I might say there is a tradeoff there, but nope, just shoot with the standard flame shotgun, then take potshots for about 10 seconds, and it is dead. Fighting and traversal should not be separated when the objective is to have both of them interact. You know my favorite thing to fight in this game? The bosses, not because they were particularly interesting (though the mascot blimp was pretty cool for a fight), but because the bosses all had combos and traversal centered around fighting them in some major way. That was when the game felt in its element. But lets talk about another major problem: The grindathon, and not the fun kind about what the character does to anything that has a ledge. No I am talking about the collectible mayhem and random loot drops. I don't know about you, but if I kill 2 dozen zombies in one blow, it is disheartening to see it contribute 0.00002% towards my cash supplies, and that is just how the combat, other than what is necessary, is unrewarding. Then we get into the absolute sin of their collectibles gathering game. 5 separate non-currency collectibles, all in places that felt unnecessarily blended in. Saints Row 3 has a lot of faults, but the collectibles were not one of them, nor were they ever crucial to the critical path. You obtained the collectibles because you were trying to earn a little extra money or do something cool or they were just over there with no fuss to get them. Here is a short list of specific ways you have to collect the collectibles in Sunset City: -Undergrind, a thing that your character defaults to only if you are 3 feet or below the place you are trying to grind on, and good luck navigating buildings. Grinding normally still has bridges, but they aren't everywhere. -Vault off of a small bar in hopes of grabbing toilet paper. I wish I was kidding. -Random Aerial Challenges -Smashing a camera that if you are lucky, is on the grindrail. If not, you may want to just waste the ammo, as ammo is everywhere. -Wall run in specific manners and heights. Wall running is a combo continuing process and it doesn't work on all surfaces so usually the best way is to just grind or bounce it out. These aren't as much of a problem but they are still an active effort. Now what does Saints Row 3 have you do? -Drive like you are a Skyrim player and the world is your mountain. -Collect item on the ground, either by foot or vehicle. -Fight random encounter of like, 10 dudes then leave. -Another ground collectible. Granted, Saints row 4 also added in some gimmicky locations for its collectibles. You know what else Saints Row 4 had? -A jump button that works on solid ground -A top speed faster than the player in Sunset Overdrive, but also more rewarding and understandable. -Vertical Wall running -Glides that last longer than you in bed. It had the tools to pull off a collectathon well, because the thing you were collecting was scattered all over the place. Sunset city had it all over the place in the sense that they were sparsely populated across the map. Saints Row 4 expects you to hop from one building to another and collect a collectible at both of them. That being said, when the game isn't focused on the collectibles or the characters, it is a hell of a lot of fun. Yahtzee barely covered the surface of what fun you can have with the traversal mechanics, and so am I.

Just started playing the game since i'm checking the free Trial for Game Pass, and this is exactly what im thinking so far, Gameplay is really damn good, is like R&C + Infamous with better movement, and it feels great. Graphics are solid aswell. But the plot and writing... eeh, it tries too hard, even if you're not taking anything serious is still too stupid. I think worst of all, is that you can't skip any cutscene or dialogue, it seems. I found it just as bad as SR4 in that sense (which i'm suprised to see many people thought it was really good on this comment section).

I actually like that the game points out that it's a video game a lot. There's so many goddamn overly serious games that try to be realistic and explain everything. Sometimes I just want to play a game and have fun. Lore and explaining is great, but sometimes it's not needed. "Why can I grind on everything with seemingly normal shoes and no propulsion?" "Why not? It's fun, go shoot things. There's a mission icon over there." Where as the usual answer in most modern games would be more along the lines of "Because I'm apparently from an ancient race of beings that look nearly identical to humans but have a weird ability to propel themselves forward. Let's spend the next 4 hours explaining it in great detail and then never mention it again." And if you're an Elder Scrolls game. You can also find about 400 books on the subject of said ancient race.

Long story short, we got it free at my job, and I play it when I am waiting for something and I have done my work for the day. Anyway, my biggest pain was "Grind so you are shot less" and I spin around and around in these tiny battlefields. And God forbid an originally PS exclusive franchise like, say... Yakuza, comes to Xbox. I've seen some truly brilliant 4th-wall-breaking, and they were my some of my favorite moments in some works. But they're usually done as small payoffs, occasionally dished out, not every ten minutes. You can't keep breaking the forth wall without taking some time to rebuild the forth wall.

DeShawn Wright Don't give me that. From the fake gameplay footage to the joke "live-action trailer" trailer, this game was hyped up. That's what hype is: getting someone excited for something without really telling them what they're getting. So to sum it up for those who have trouble telling if Yahtzee likes game or not: *Good gameplay mix of agility and shooting *Weapons are a bit of mixed reception. Some good, some bad *Has humor, but didn't make Yahtzee laugh *Relies too much on self-aware humor, to the point of pointing out and lampshading game mechanics To sum it up: Good gameplay bogged down by too much self-aware humor....

Seriously: this game would have been about 75% better if they'd taken the soundtrack from Crazy Taxi.
