When we had the false missile attack alert in Hawaii I remember everyone stopping in their tracks and checking their phones. Then we all looked to the sky and then at each other. Most of us just continued on with our day while a few took off in a panic. The all-clear came maybe 7 minutes later. It was nice to see everyone stay calm and not run around like raving lunatics.

Here in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 there would not be anywhere to evacuate to, the country could be completely wiped out by a nuclear strike, not a massive strike, just enough missiles/warheads to destroy all the major population zones and fallout, starvation, no clean water, no medical facilities left and definitely no support from any governmental authority, a total wipeout, unless you happen to have your own fully stocked shelter that could sustain you for a year or more, or you were in government.

Exactly why the UK HMG quietly abandoned civil defense in the 1980s, disbanded the royal observer corps, and briefly passing CD to reserve forces (territorial army) units in the 90s - whose job wasn't to establish structure but to eliminate any survivors not capable of physical labour and therefore a waste of food resources. With the power and type of weapons it was no longer worth the effort

I have always said this. THE LIVING WILL ENVY the DEAD. It will not take place in Europe but in the middle east. They the nutters in Israel the US are preparing us for Armageddon. Yes Russia will be involved only because of Israel the US and the driving effort for Iran. God planned it this way. It is written. It's not about who the bad guy and the good guys. We know ultimately how we as a society have left our lord and turned away. The last straw is all this transgender stuff. It's a final slap in the face to Jesus creation. Attacks on our children, drug abuse, sex and human trafficking, organ harvesting, the crisper technology and trying to change the human genome. The covid debacle, fall of the dollar GREED POWER struggle. LIES phonography. The endless list goes on and we did nothing about it! We let it happen. Erecting satanic massive demonic idles of worship. You can call Russia this big bad boogie man however who is holding the rotten apples. So so sad. Pray people God Jesus and our beautiful mother Mary. This is our answer our only true hope.

Thought provoking. This movie reminded me of the early 1960s when there was a strong threat of nuclear war. I remember coming home from school and I was young then and so afraid. We had drills in school and in our town. The war sirens were tested frequently. All we heard on the radio and read in the papers were the real possibility of nuclear war. I get the impression the writers possessed a profound dearth of knowledge regarding the history, design and configuration - let alone use - of strategic weapons. It really undercuts the drama. Although the days of multi-MT warheads raining down by the tens of thousands are gone its worth noting that most modern weapons are considerably smaller in the 350-550Kt range and far fewer in number with about 3800 active weapons around the world - down from 70-80k that were active just 40 years ago. Instead of this canned, almost maudlin "after school special" production, I would recommend watching Threads (1984) where +300Mt was dropped on the UK over a course of sixteen hours (and after a realistic spiral from crisis to war).

I remember The Day After. I’ve grown up fascinated by physics and all things nuclear. Ever since from a kid. The more I read and study I realize physics is as much a responsibility as well as the studied laws of nature. We have discovered and been gifted tremendous knowledge. We can choose to do good with it. We can choose to act impulsively and hurt one another. Let’s hope cooler heads prevail and we use responsibly.

Completely irresponsible of this film maker. The couple would have to be very close to ground zero to be mercifully carbonized like they were. Their deaths would likely be slow and horrific. This film trivialized the horrors of nuclear war.

2021 - Nice to see the "diversity" of people gathered together and enjoying each other's company - initially, but this scene would be quite rare today, at least for me where I reside. This is what America could & should be, but today we are so polarized. Anyways, there's nothing like a good breakfast & coffee with those you love. Then they can drop the "Big Egg". I had a temporary job assignment to do a 'manual labor' type work at a VA hospital in the mid 1970's. While removing - renovation - originally installed lockers (late 1940's), the workers placed period items behind before installation. Cool. One item was a municipal Civil Defense warning sign that would be posted on the wall. Instructions in case of a 'Nuclear Attack'. Last thing listed: If you see a Bright Flash take cover Immediately. Instead, the world was given another 'Bomb'. The Russian Invasion of the Ukraine. February 24, 2022. Never know; we just might see the "Flash". The most sentimentally, enjoying elements are the interactions between the focused people in the movie pending the ultimate interruption of their lives.

I greatly dislike how stupid and delusional the women are portrayed in this movie. Why are they so unreasonable, so totally without a single logical thought? And why can't they even follow any logical explainations or their husbands' advice? As a woman, mother and grandmother, I wouldn't be anything like these delusional women. And I have already proved to be more thoughtful and logical in bad situations in my past.

In the event of nuclear war, there will be no evacuations, probably no warnings other than maybe state or local level ‘shelter in place’ type stuff. If your area is targeted, there’s no point in going anywhere, or for that matter even worrying about it. I think there will be zero advance warning for this reason. Let it happen, and maybe attempt an after the fact response.

This is a clear case of what not to do! The senior couple had a basement, they could have fortified it and been more safe instead of dancing in the living room and being blown to smithereens. As far as the couple who decided to get on the road, my guess is they never made it 20 miles. You can not out run a nuclear attack, stay put and protect yourself from the blast and fallout. Those who live in big cities have less of a chance of survival unless they have access to a bomb shelter because any roads out of the city will be gridlock. I live in the deep south, in a state that has no military installation that would be deemed a target. If you survive what comes afterwards, being in a warmer weather state increases your ability to have water and food that's not contaminated. It's pie in the sky thinking I know, but we have enough sense to know we're at the precipice where anything is possible. BTW, we have guns to protect ourselves from the lawlessness sure to follow when society has been decimated!

Clearly you are young, that couple made the best possible choice at the end of their lives. In that situation and at their age, life would be short and horrific. Something a young couple might live through but for those in their senior years, it simply is not possible. They are examples of brave and honorable people, not to mention in the end we are all going to die, how better in the arms of those you love, at peace with your life. There is no such thing as limited nuclear war, once it starts we will all be back in the stone age, most likely looking at a new ice age. The last time we did that we were a hell of a lot tougher and even then only about 10000 humans lived by the time it was done.

@@swamp5050 You are slightly older than me, I am 68 but we will have to agree to disagree. But perhaps it is possible you do not have clear understanding of what life would be like after a nuclear exchange. I am not sure what choice I would make myself under those circumstances but I certainly understand the context of why this couple choose as they did. What surprises me is that you do not. Would life in pain and with loss of ones dignity really mean that much to you? You need to remember that we are not just talking about the guy but his wife who was disabled. After a strike there will be no medical for anyone especially those of us who are older. I hope neither one of us ever has to face such a choice. I still liked the film and thought it well done, not a typical end of the world film but a very human one.

@@charlescoffey9523 Firstly I'd like to direct you to a couple of movies on YT, Threads and The Divide. I've been through some stuff, the cold War in the 50's where we had weekly drills at school where we had to get under our small wooden desks and put our arms over heads to protect ourselves incase of a nuclear attack. The Soviet Unions threat when President Kennedy and Khrushchev almost came to nuclear blows, the World at the time understood this could have been the end had not Kennedy out maneuvered the Russian. Having survived Hurricanes mud slides fires and so many earthquake's I lost count, plus the worst tornado I've ever experienced and survived last week and still in recovery mode. The moral of my story is I never once gave up on living no matter what it might look like. While nuking the planet would be devastating to recover from preparation is key. It will be a struggle for whatever time is remaining to you, but giving in has never been part of my plan. PPE's, I have two gas masks and extra filters, water purifiers food and all the necessary personal survival equipment. Now at my age it's possible I die of natural causes, but just incase I intend to fight for life till the bitter end. 😎

This may be realistic in terms of human reactions and coping. It is not realistic in terms of the actual attack. We will not have anything like this amount of time to mull things over and say our goodbyes. The U.S. and Russia have roughly 6,000 nukes each. If the Launch on Warning doctrine is still in effect (it may or may not be, depending on new or cancelled treaty terms), then the moment our or their sensors detect a launch, we may launch 2,000 nukes immediately. Anyone directly under the detonation will be reduced to his/her component atoms in 1/10,000th of a second ("Sourcebook on Atomic Energy", Samuel Glasstone). The temperature at the heart of the fireball is 10 million degrees Centigrade, the same as the interior of the Sun. Survival is not likely. Make as much noise as you can to stop this madness, if it is still possible.
