My favorite Danny Boyle movie! The cast is incredible, every frame is captivating, and the score is an eargasm from start to finish. Fun fact - When Cappa is trying to get up in the gold spacesuit, Danny Boyle had crew climb on his back without his knowledge so he would struggle harder for the in-helmet cam 🤣🤣🤣

I wish I had been able to witness this incredible film in theaters but I was only 5 when it came out. I’ve watched it like 8 times now and each watch is amazing. I still can’t comprehend how Danny managed to make one of the best looking films I’ve ever seen on a relatively small budget, with a stacked cast, amazing dialogue and writing, and sound design. Just insane work.

This movie's dope and while it doesn't help reacting this is one of those movies that benefits tremendously from a second (okay repeated) viewing. You can really watch any one character throughout the entire movie. The trivia on this one also enhances repeated viewings.

This is one of the most space accurate films. During pre-production, the team invited a theoretical cosmosoligist to speak with the team. The cosmologist let them know there is a small, but non-zero, chance that if a super-heavy element was introduced to the core of our sun it would slow down the nuclear reaction feeding the star and their plan to reignite the reaction had a non-zero chance of working. The writers just wanted to make sure it was possible even if they didn't explain to the audience.

The implausiblility of the whole premise of the sun just suddenly starting to die, is only exceeded by the implausiblility of there being anything we could do about it. A bomb the size of Manhattan? Is that supposed to sound like a lot? Look at the size difference, and you see that even a bomb the size of the Earth would be a completely insignificant little speck on the surface of the Sun.

I’ve always assumed a big part of the initial ‘should we reroute to Icarus 1’ debate is fuel. When they leave they likely assume that, though it’s a likely kamikaze mission, there’s a chance everything goes well AND they can make it home again. So the introduction of a detour with a possible benefit means they have to also take into account that ignoring Icarus 1 and their own mission failing, then there’s a chance their return trip will be impossible. Easier to make a stop on the way than have to double back should their own bomb fail. I always think about sally ride’s tampons when I watch this movie 😂 when you look at how many tampons nasa gave her vs the time she’d be in space it’s hysterical, but it was actually a highly calculated number to make sure there was no way she could run out no matter how her body responded to the trip.

The film is man vs nature/god (the sun) man vs man (pinbacker, also mace vs capa) and man vs self (many character's internal struggles) Pinbacker seems to make it man vs man through his egotistical religious zealotry standing in the way of combined human scientific ingenuity for the survival of all. It MAKES the third act good and necessary. He's foreshadowed from the very opening scene as we see Searle beginning the psychological descent that he obviously went on. We also see Kaneda considering the same, and viewing Pinbacker's final message from the Icarus 1 where he describes a meteor shower that could have destroyed them as "beautiful." Harvey and Searle compliment each other, and it's worth noting that all 4 female characters are in different supportive, nurturing roles.

Not really, considering the whole slasher twist after the fact. Even if Tray didn't forget to adjust the heat shields, the captain of Icarus 1 still would have sabotaged their mission. I feel like that part is a relic of a different draft where that simple mistake is what lead to catastrophe. But the third act twist makes the error ultimately irrelevant since either way, they were screwed as soon as they docked with other ship.

The slasher twist definitely takes the movie down a notch for me. Kind of makes the whole forgetting to adjust the shield mistake ultimately pointless since the captain of Icarus 1 was just going to sabotage their mission anyway. I'm assuming that detail was a left over from a draft prior to studio interference. That and it's a major tone shift that I didn't really care for. In my opinion, it could have gone down in cinematic history as one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made, but like so many other potential sci-fi masterpieces, something in the third act just ruins it for me and makes me downgrade it to just pretty good.

As a non scientific person I have watched enough science documentaries to know that if the sun really was dying it would get hotter before dying. Not colder. I was basically ok with the twist/turn. I do think it could have worked just as well if it had just been one of them turning. or even if the struggle had just been problems/technical failures. the twist does make it more unique, tho. and while i knew going in basically they weren't going to make it (i just expect that from indie sci-fi and horror, esp if its acclaimed). I did at least appreciate that they succeeded and their sacrifices weren't in vein. I think the only real problem i had was the guy being left on icarus 1 just giving up immediately. I felt he could have tried to do more before giving up. but thats me. the comment about them being the top minds or whatever, its really been proven again and again to not really matter. the biosphere 2 project comes to mind. people locked in what was supposed to be a moon or mars base for several years to see how viable the whole thing could be. lets just say its listed as a failure for good reason. in-fighting, problems with the plantlife, with the construction materials, i think people even breaking out at one point. it was a s***show. and yeah, that piece of music (which i've also seen titled "Surface of the sun") has been in a number of things. the most vivid one i remember was it being used in an early episode of The Walking Dead. its just such a great piece.

@@SrCadet1234 Perhaps It did and the slasher part straight up ruined it.Would have been perfectly fine to mirror the Docs "sun disease" on the Icarus one.Clever, even.Instead we got this cheap slasher bs. Taste aside, they fucked up.Plain and simple.

@@ReezeGoingSenseless except they did mirror his "sun disease". The fact that you even call it that suggests you don't understand. Kaneda and Dr. Searle were both experiencing a similar obsession. They just weren't too far gone to the level of pinbacker. A slasher would be considered something where one individual goes around killing everybody. Pinbacker only killed one person on Icarus 2. His character was supposed to present the final obstacle, man. Like I said, it sounds like you didn't understand the film.

@@SrCadet1234 Patronize some more, would you? Pinbacker killed Trey and Corazon (botanist) directly. The sabotage led to Mace freezing. The final, blurry mess is not even worth adressing. I stand by it, they fucked up a perfectly fine SciFi Movie with cheap, B-movie slasher nonsense.

A lot of people LOVE this movie. I'm not one of them. It has a real "film school" feel to it. It's bad science so it makes for bad science fiction. But what's worse is it seems it is bad science fiction on purpose. It's like the author can't be bothered to get the science right because he's too busy with loftier ideas like "What is God?" "What would you see if you could look upon the face of God?" "If God was dying would you want to save him?" "If you could save God would that make you like a god yourself?" Maybe I'd care about what these characters thought about these questions if they didn't seem too incompetent to be trusted to park ones car much less pilot a space craft to the Sun in order to "drop a Manhattan size bomb" into the Sun in order to restart its fusion reaction. I could spend an hour explaining what is wrong with that premise but that would be 55 minutes longer than the author spent coming up with it or he spent researching the science to explain it. So, in the end, I'm too distracted by the bad science and bad characters to care about the themes. And when I see the tired old trope of incompetent and mentally unbalanced people being sent into space only to go bat shit insane and start killing one another I think the writers are just projecting their reaction to being without Starbucks and Facebook for the time it would take to travel in space i.e. they'd go insane and start killing everyone.
