Spaceflight scientist here, Sunshine is a phenomenal piece of work. It is such an underrated film. The science doesn't always check out, but the visuals, soundtrack, and writing more than make up for it. It's just a work of art. Thank you for reacting to it.

To clear up some of your confusion: The Icarus spaceship consists of two main components: 1. The main ship which is the long skinny series of tunnels and spinning arms where the crew spends most of their time. 2. The sunshield which is also where the payload (aka the stellar bomb) is stored. The goal of the mission is to reach close to the sun wherein they would detach the main sunshield along with the payload which would boost into the sun and detonate while the main ship and a smaller portion of the sunshield would begin boosting backwards towards earth. As Pinbacker wipes out the crew, Capa makes his last ditch effort to separate the sunshield and jumps across the gap so that he can manually ride it into the sun and detonate it as a self-sacrifice. That very large room that you kept questioning was the room within the separated sunshield where the payload is stored (the very large cubic object). The payload is so dense and massive that it has its own gravitational field which is why they were able to stand on different sides of it. When he triggers the stellar bomb they kind of slow down time as an artistic way to show Capa’s final moments seeing the beauty of the “big bang on a small scale.” Really loved your reaction and glad you enjoyed the movie. This is a criminally underrated one and hope one day it gets the recognition it deserves. The cinematography, the music, the cast, the suspense and interesting dilemmas. Just a prime example of why I love movies.

That space on the ship that you mentioned being too big is the actual payload. It’s literally as big as Manhattan. The tiny vessel is simply pushing it towards the sun. Incredible production design.

Plus, our sense of scale _inside_ structures is wildly miscalibrated - NASA's Vehicle Assembly Building is one of the biggest by volume in the world, people describe a sense of _vastness_ when inside it and yet it's "only" around 200 metres on a side. Something like the Icarus payload, especially given it's unlit, would look and feel essentially boundless.

49:19 That's just some excellent filmmaking, score, and performance! I really love this movie, especially for the investment they make in the power of the situation they're in. Seeing Mercury as such a small but kind of magical survivor in front of that incredible force. Kind of puts you in the mindset of Pinbacker and Serle who begin to deify it and lose their minds.

I'm sure it has been covered. The place where Cappa, Cassie and Pinbacker were in the end was in fact "The Payload"... The giant bomb, which in the opening was explained to have roughly the mass of the island of Manhattan, So it is truly a massive space. Cappa has to force the payload into the star as a result of Pinbacker sabotaging the ship. Cassie went to the payload to escape Pinbacker, he followed her there. Cappa needed to go from the cockpit to the Payload before the 4minutes was up so he could get inside and activate the bomb there manually. The reason for all the weird shit in the payload, sliding all around and the Flames remain still in front of Cappa is that because the payload was flying into the sun, The gravity was warping time and space. So it all happened, but that is why it started getting weird.

In a hard vacuum, you don't freeze instantly. Your body radiates heat away over time. Your blood will boil, the air will be forced out of your lungs (unless you exhaled before hard vacuum). You will pass out in 15-30 seconds, you will die in about a minute. You can maybe give yourself an extra 10-15 seconds if you supersaturate your blood by hyperventilating before your final exhale. See also "The Expanse" season 5, and "Event Horizon". They both depict exposure to space very accurately.
@rask004
@rask004 3 күн бұрын
A note for clarification: Pinbacker "saw the light" too much by overusing the sun lounge and went mad from it. He spent so much time sunlight bathing that his body irradiates the air around him, or this is the effect the film makers intended. Pinbacker represents the Fatalist side of Humanity, while Cappa represents the Scientific and Fighting side.

This and Moon are two of my favorite sci-fi films from the 2000's. I love the technical aspect of it in the first 2/3 of the film. I'm one of those who doesn't think the final act is as good as the first 2 acts of the film, but I don't "hate" it like some fans do. I wish it was more about overcoming technical issues, unforseen physics problems, or relativity quandries, but I get it, it's Hollywood, trying to have an exciting finale. Anyway, glad someone suggested this to you.

I agree it was always unfortunate that this kind of turned into a zombie movie, I don't think it needed to get supernatural like it did. A crazed captain on the other ship wouldn't have been original anyway however (The Abyss, Event Horizon, 2001 in a way). If they worked the story just a little bit more, this would be an all-time great in the Sci-Fi movie pantheon. They could have just made the "enemy" the difficulty of completing such a mission, it could have been Gravity years before that movie came out.

Danny Boyle is my favorite filmmaker! I loved this reaction! Thank you Coby! One thing that I think you missed, the ship was in two parts. The main drive which included the garden, the bridge, sleeping quarters, etc. and the shield/bomb. Cappa jumped to the bomb at the end before it detached and flew into the sun. _Great_ cinema experience this one. And the first time I really noticed John Murphy's work, sublime score. There're so many liberties taken with the science in this and it doesn't _remotely_ matter IMO - the movie is about the people, with a healthy dash of sci-fi sense of wonder at just how astonishing and beautiful a star is, even a fairly "average" one like ours. (that "space jump" is very survivable BTW, accidents and some pretty unpleasant NASA experiments in the 1960s on chimps and dogs have shown us we can survive up to a couple of minutes vacuum exposure though you'd only be _conscious_ for about 15-20 seconds, after that you need a Kappa to help you :) - yes it's cold but your heat can only escape by _radiating_ away from you, there's no air to _conduct_ it away, so you'd cool fairly slowly. Hypoxia would kill you way sooner)

I personally didn't think the Pinbacker reveal was the strongest but the visuals, the score, and the atmosphere are just absolutely one of a kind. You wouldn’t freeze instantly because there’s no air to conduct heat away. The bigger problem is the lack of pressure. oxygen would leave your blood in seconds, making you pass out in 10-15 seconds. Holding your breath would rupture your lungs, and your skin would swell as gases expanded. If you got back inside fast, you might survive, but not without serious pain and possible lung damage.

Harvey gets a bad rap, but I think in the character notes he's a husband and a father who realises too late that he can't function effectively away from his family, and he becomes consumed by a determination to go home. Also, someone on YT has made a fantastic video analysing the characters and the manner of their deaths according to the aspect of humanity they represent (put very simply: cold/ rational and hot/ emotional) - it makes a fascinating subtext.

The plot does not revolve around the sun dying in the normal sense: this is not due for around five billion years based on our understanding of nuclear fusion. It has instead been "infected" with a "Q-ball" - a supersymmetric nucleus, left over from the big bang - that is disrupting the normal matter. This is a theoretical particle that scientists at CERN are currently trying to confirm, and was one of the many contributions of the science advisor. The film's bomb is meant to blast the Q-ball to its constituent parts which will then naturally decay, allowing the sun to return to normal.

Sunshine was directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. This was the second collab between Boyle and Garland. They also did 28 Days Later (2002) with Cillian Murphy. This certainly had an all star cast. Especially with Murphy, Evans, and Yeoh onboard. I’m of the opinion that this is an underrated film that should’ve garnered more attention.. Rose Byrne had a small part in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002),as one of Amidala’s haidmaids. She then did I Capture the Castle (2003) with Romola Garai before doing Troy (2004), playing opposite Brad Pitt as Briseis, and then did the sequel to 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later (2007). Benedict Wong is famous for his appearances in the MCU franchise and more recently, the Netflix series, 3 Body Problem. Cliff Curtis is of Maōri descent and got his debut in The Piano (1993), then appeared in Whale Rider (2002) with Keisha Castle-Hughes and was on Fear the Walking Dead on AMC. Hiroyuki Sanada has appeared in so many films, notably The Last Samurai (2003) opposite Tom Cruise, several MCU franchise films, John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) and😊 as Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the 2024 remake of Shōgun.

It would be great if you watched more Danny Boyle films. Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, The Beach. You seem to like his style. I had trouble following too. At the end he separated Icarus II from the payload and literally boarded the payload.

While Danny Boyle's films don't generally do it for me ( _Shallow Grave_ is probably the only one I rewatch) I do appreciate his directorial style. Alwin H. Küchler is the real MVP of _Sunshine_ for me, absolutely outstanding cinematography, & the cast all do a great job, as would be expected from such accomplished actors. I think there's a bit of a weird disconnect in the film: the first two-thirds of it is a straight hard science-fiction film, while the finale is a supernatural cosmic horror with religious overtones. The most common explanation I've seen (that Pinbacker is a shared mental delusion & the crew are going insane) is, to me, a terrible cop-out. But then, I much prefer cosmic horror over boring old space madness. 34:48 Lizard Coby!

This was a Danny Boyle movie, not a Chris Noland movie. Props need to go to the director of this film.

I've never heard of this movie before. It was very Nolan-like.

Amazing movie. I would have loved to see it in the movie theater. A few suggestions for amazing classic movies : Fitzcarraldo, Aguirre, the Wrath of God, Come and See and Amadeus.

I really liked this movie. As much as I enjoy it when you react to my favorites, I love it when you do movies I’ve never seen before, like this, Titane, and Dark City.

Awesome! I don't think I've ever seen anyone else react to this underrated film. Please do a reaction to Event Horizon as well.

As much as I appreciate all of Danny Boyle's films, I felt it was a poor choice to visualize the "villain" at the end the way he did. It was hard to tell what was happening for many of those shots, and I couldn't understand how he had survived all that solar exposure - and why he seemed almost superhuman.

You should check out 2020's Underwater, it's got some very similar DNA to this, it's just set several mjiles below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean in an abyssal trench instead of outer space.
