The Fly is a 1986 American science fiction horror film directed and co-written by David Cronenberg. Produced by Brooksfilms and distributed by 20th Century Fox, the film stars Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis, and John Getz. Loosely based on George Langelaan's 1957 short story of the same name and the 1958 film of the same name, The Fly tells of an eccentric scientist who, after one of his experiments goes wrong, slowly turns into a fly-hybrid creature. The score was composed by Howard Shore and the make-up effects were created by Chris Walas, along with makeup artist Stephan Dupuis.

It's a beautiful reference to Zhuangzhi: "Once upon a time, I, Chuang Chou, dreamt I was a butterfly, fluttering hither and thither, to all intents and purposes a butterfly. I was conscious only of my happiness as a butterfly, unaware that I was Chou. Soon I awaked, and there I was, veritably myself again. Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly, dreaming I am a man. Between a man and a butterfly there is necessarily a distinction. The transition is called the transformation of material things."

This movie is truly genius. Cronenberg re-imagined the original film he was remaking as an allegory of what was a big social fear at the time: getting infected by an untreatable disease associated with drug use and s3x, such as AIDS. The way Seth acts at the beginning of being fused with the fly reminds of the behaviour of a drug user who's losing it, followed by the slow decay of his body that unfortunately was a very common thing at the time to witness on patients with AIDS. As a kid I saw this movie as a horror film. Nowadays I only see as a tragedy with some gruesome stuff in it.

The reason Brundle tried to combine Veronica and the baby with himself was because of his rational human mind being over-written by the fly's instinct, so he begins to take ever-more desperate and irrational steps to preserve himself in some form. He was wrestling with the fly for control of himself and losing. I love the way that both men, Seth and Stathis, take reversals in their character; Seth begins to lose himself to the animalistic Id of the fly, while Stathis realises what matters to him and gets his shit together to be a better man. It's tragic. There are many allegories for what the film represents; Some say it's disease, some say drug addiction or dementia. Whatever it is, the feeling of losing a loved one to something that can't be stopped is heart-rending.

The Fly is a fabulous movie. Great choice Coby. I believe it won an oscar for makeup and special effects? It is a great remake of the classic Fly movie from the 50s i believe as there were 2 back then. I am not sure if you are taking rewuests but i would love to see your reaction to the Original "The Howling 1981." The practical effects are done by the same man (Rob Bottin) who did John Carpenters The Thing. Very interesting trivia behind the effects and the people involved as Rick Baker was slated to do the werewolf effects but he hopped on to another werewolf project..... yep, American Werewolf in London. Perhaps a reaction to both these movies may be up for debate 😊

I would give that reaction 10,000 likes. Your reaction, as always, brought back many memories for me. It’s been a couple of decades since I last saw this movie. I saw it originally in the theater in the 1980s, and remember that well. The line “No, be afraid. Be very afraid” is originally from this version of The Fly. Afterward it was quoted all over the place. You just saw where it came from.

I was yelling to you that’s not a comedy. You just didn’t hear me 😂😂😂. Seriously, it’s always better if a film turns out to be something that you don’t expect.

"Creepy, weird and disgusting- I liked it! " The original "The Fly" movie was a 1958 horror film starring Vincent Price and David Hedison. The ending is much different.that the 1986 movie.

For future reference David Cronenburg is not really known for comedies he is better knwn for nightmare inducing body horrors.

This may not have needed more of an ending, but if you’re interested, there is a sequel starring Eric Stoltz. It picks up where this one left off. Incidentally, the 1958 original spawned a couple of sequels as well. And you definitely need more Cronenberg in your cinematic diet. He did an adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Dead Zone”. Would also recommend “Scanners” and “Videodrome” as examples of his earlier works. BTW, you’re the first reactor who hasn’t jumped to the immediate conclusion that she got pregnant after teleportation. That’s the reason Seth was so intent on her having the baby. It might very well have been conceived prior to teleportation, and would be purely human. If that were the case, it would indeed be all that was left of Seth.

Great film! Along with Carpenter's The Thing, a remake better than the original. Coby. please continue with the Cronenberg films, Dead Ringers is also excellent. If you would like a comedy from Goldblum and Davis from about the same time there is Earth Giirls Are Easy and Transelvania 6-5000. Not classics but both are fun watches.

The Fly is a masterpiece! One of the very few remakes I love and one of my all time favorite films! Cronenberg killed it and it hits so hard with that tragic ending! Great reaction!! 🙌 Once you said you thought it was going to be a comedy, I had a good lil chuckle 🤣

David Cronenberg did a movie very similar to The Matrix but instead of a computer program it's a video game. It even came out the same year as The Matrix but the budget overshadowed it so much that nobody saw Existenz with Jude Law and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

This is a remake of a film with Vincent Price. It is different enough due to what happens in the transport process to allow each movie to stand on their own without spoiling each other much. There was also a Return of the Fly for the original and the one you watched which was the Fly II.

it's always an intense reaction to this ! and i believe it's a tragic romance as well as a Horror thriller from the master of body horror himself David Cronenberg . This won a well deserved Oscar that year for best make up effects , and it 's easy to see why so grotesque yet so well done . Goldblum and Davis have great chemistry together because they were a real life couple . Thanks Coby your reactions always liven up my night !!😄 🤙

I remember sitting down to watch this film when I was maybe 15… my mum gave me some dinner whilst I was watching, and I was just tucking in when it got to the part when Brundle bunders all over his food. Didn’t touch a single mouthful of dinner after that. Fly II is definitely worth a watch. Has a lot more dark humour in it, as well as more gross out shocks!

Have you watched any other Cronenberg films? He's one of my favourite directors and he's done so many great and weird cult classics, some really fun almost B-movie type stuff like Shivers and Rabid, but then Scanners, The Dead Zone, Videodrome and Naked Lunch are just awesome, I'd suggest 'the Dead Zone' with Christopher Walken for a next to watch film of his, it's just so good.

Random trivia - the guy in the bar who "loses his arm in the arm wrestling match" was a terrific 1960s and 70s heavyweight boxer named George Chuvalo. Chuvalo fought George Foreman once and Muhammad Ali twice and despite losing those bouts, was never knocked down in his career. One tough hombre.
