Hello, Flow around fly wings is indeed different. Wing movements there are a special kind of movement called clap and fling, which violently tears apart a small parcel of air to generate a small turbulent vortex.

Thanks for your example of using various biological examples size and linking it to Reynolds #’s. I was involved with developing the Aquaskipper, an oscillating winged water bike powered by hopping. Surfers are now foiling out to catch waves! The America’s Cup boats are flying at speeds around fifty knots! If one of those hits a whale who wins?

I've been struggling to understand this from written material for 2 years. Your explanation made the "real world" effects of Re crystal clear. THANK YOU!

Fascinating. So in a sense turbulence is needed just to get around? You tend to assume its the opposite (streamlined design of bodies etc)

Thank you! I'm trying to get a feel for characterizing turgulence. Now I've got a feel for what is a "high" and "low" renolds number. So the turbulence in the flow for a fly is not really that great, but if you look at its wings...isn't that a different story? Does how close you look matter?

the whole point of aerodynamics is to get the trailing edge pressure the same as the entry pressure to reduce drag to zero ..skeatesy

WONDERFUL! But I'm going to have to google to find WHAT UNITS are used for the four quantities, a worked example would have been nice.

No, the whole point of aerodynamics is efficiency with respect to lift vs drag. The point is to reduce the drag coefficient by reducing kinetic friction on the surface of the wing by reducing turbulence. Entry pressure? A pressure differential on the wing is required for lift.
