Join Harry 'Happy' Newton our SUP Vlogger as he heads off for an evening of SUP surfing longer boards.
Harry is always looking to improve his paddling, and in this weeks video we send him out on some longer boards to get him more comfortable catching bumps and riding waves. Doing this gives you a really good idea of what you will need to do to go downwinding or paddling further in open sea conditions. Balance, board trim and paddle technique can all be improved by having small surf sessions like this.

Good context and video for many who wonder about raceboards and small surf/BOP style events. For most humans sub 24" wide boards are going to be really challenging unless its glassy and even then. Their is a reason why most downwind boards are 26-30 inches wide. That generation looks like it might deliver as promised and make a really versitile one board for doing a bit of everything.

Never sup surfed before but if I want to learn to just ride waves in a straight line in waves like this video is wearing a buoyancy aid okay/safe?

Yes, wearing a buoyancy aid can be very helpful and confidence building too. Enjoy!

Thank you for your video. I like watching downwind and (race) sup surfing videos very much. They hopefully help me to improve my skills as well. In this regard, I'm wondering exactly when the perfect time is for moving backwards on the board? Is it as soon as I feel the wave has reached (and is rising) the tail of the board, or is it somewhat later? Keep up the good work!

Thanks. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I’m probably not the best person to answer so maybe Rueben will add to this later. But usually as soon as the wave starts pushing the board or very soon after that. As the board picks up speed you will need to get further back to keep balance. Having a staggered stance helps shift your weight sooner.

Hi Kai, Harry pretty much nailed it. You will feel the board release and accelerate and as soon as this is happening start to move back to keep the board flat. You may also want to keep a few paddle strokes going if the wave is small. The big tip with using longer boards in the surf is making sure you're riding the right of the back of the tail. This is where you will have the most control. Go give it a go have fun Reuben

Nice presentation. Any inflatables in these size ranges that can bump surf as well as these two?

Thanks! A decent touring board or wider race board would be ok. But they won’t be quite as good as catching bumps or as fast as a hard board.

Hi, how can I recognize a bump or good bump? 🙏🙏
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 4 ай бұрын
ahh, good question. A good bump or the best bump is when it is at its steepest. If big enough it maybe about to break as well. But if you are paddling fast enough a smaller bump will do also. Time on the water seeing how bumps and waves move is really the best way to recognise this. Thanks Reuben
