I bought a super 8 film projector from a discount store in 1975 and also bought very cut up 1950's sci-fi movies that were silent. I was a kid $80, the projector was affordable under $50, movies in a catalog were cheap $2-8, the camera was an unreachable price wise. I had a film splicer and cut the movies up as my own edits. Charged .25 cents to see. Hahaha made $1.

I recently bought what appears to be a new unused Eumig 714-D super 8 sound projector. This is identical to the one my father had back in the 1970s but which no longer works because of abuse including a broken switch. But the new one is perfect so I’m very happy with it. That said I plan on taking your advice and getting my old family films transferred before using it extensively.

When super 8 film was made with The sound magnetic tape it was done on both sides. Only one was used for the sound the other was to keep it even on the roll. The second one was called the balance strip. Later some high End cameras recorded on the balance strip for a stereo affect. Only a few projectors could take advantage by playing the second magnetic strip.

Had a similar projector my dad purchased in 1978. Once videos were available in the 1980's and more affordable, I switched to video cameras in the mid 80's. 8mm film had a 4 minute time slot, vs video had 120min in NTSC or 180 min in PAL. (standard speed). you can digitize your own films or send them to a lab for processing (costly) ,.

Those Eumig projectors made in Austria are great. I have a Eumig Super 8mm/single 8mm/regular 8mm sound projector and it's terrific. One can also buy a Eumig external speaker or connect another speaker or one's stereo system via the DIN connection (a European connection used by Philips, Bang & Olufsen, etc.) or by using a DIN plug/RCA audio adaptor. :)

That’s a great memory for me as well. The sound of the projector, the screen that had a sandy surface , even the smell of the projector bulb and the film. Only looked at them at Xmas time. Have them all now along with a bunch of super 8’s I have shot myself. Just shot a roll of Tri-X reversal on a recent trip to Thailand.

Thanks for this video, I recently purchased a 624 D and it looks almost exactly like this one. The lower dial has no text but has arrow symbols and a "Start" on the right with Audio symbol and sadly, didn't come with a taking reel, but the same shop also had some reels with film on them, that dont have images, so could be audio, so i have to yet see if they are actually 8/Super8s or just audios or blank 8s that are of course now ruined because they were kept in an open box lol But, good to have a working projector that I checked before buying and the bulb lit up like magic. I cant wait to test it once I shoot a reversal that I just ordered.

Last week I was at a secondhand store and got a Vintage GAF 1788-Z Projector for $15, it utilizes 8mm and Super 8, and it works well. I don’t have any film yet for it, but I’ll be getting my hands on an 8mm copy of Laughing Gas by Charlie Chaplin, along with a Laurel and Hardy film and another Chaplin reel. My grandmother has super 8 footage of my father and his brother, the films were projected and recorded years ago on a VHS tape, I plan to re-record them with a 1080p digital camera to ensure that these home videos are preserved in the best quality possible. I’ll consider scanning services, I heard that CVS will scan them but I need to know more before I hand them anything.

You have no idea how much I wish I'd found your channel a decade ago if it existed.. I had so much analog in my house and I didn't know how to do a thing with it and then I had a fire and a crazy crackhead tenant breaking in before that all I have left is a few things from the few super 8 reels that I managed to carry out of the house. I have from the 70s a S-8 projector and a camera that works but I can’t find a lab to process the film so it can be protectable(for the projector) and honestly the worst thing to see on an old super 8 projector is watching your film getting stuck eaten and burnt by the light bulb… anyways great video!

Noah, as a former projectionist for my high school, I liked the fact of threading the film myself. So, when I got into super 8 I would've liked to have more professional projector. But, I had to deal with an automatic threader. Have you seen any projectors for super 8 that were NOT automatic?

The Eumig Mark S Super 8 only projector is semi auto-loading. The projector will load the film automatically through the gate. Once the film exits the gate it's up to you to manually load the rest to the take-up reel. I have this model and it works great, and is very gentle on film. This Super 8 only model will play both silent and sound films. It has a unique feature that disengages the pressure pads when running silent film.

My 16mm projectors are from the 1930s and they take a 750 or 1000 watt light bulb And it still works great! I am currently trying to make a 3d printed optical sound head to put in my camera but I haven't got it working yet

You can still record sound on your super8 film. But only after developing. You can get your super8 films still sound striped at various places. For example fipra or andec in Germany (laminate stripe). In Italy there is a place where you also can have your films paste striped. Also, you actually can project your negative films after making a contact print. At andec you can get a positive super8 print from your super8 negative.

eumig 600 series is one of the best choices for playing both 8mm formats, they are pretty much indestructible! (but im also very biassed about eumig :)) also repairing them is not that big of a problem, van eck video services in holland sells almost all parts that can break and they ship worldwide. if a part doesnt exist anymore they 3d print it

I purchased a gaf branded projector first.... and it’s a piece of garbage.... never got it working right.... the eumig came from eBay,,. Untested... and works perfectly.... Ralph Hoskins there is one type of Gaf projector which was made by eumig. It is an 800 series sound projector with gaf logos. Gaf never made anything themselves i believe so all was batch engineered

Super 8 film produced today doesn't have any sound. There used to be super 8 film with magnetic strips which would record sound, but they're long discontinued. As for digitising them, you can in theory scan & crop each frame individually if it's already been developed, then put them all together like an animation, but labs usually include digitisation in the developing price

Do you have any tips for spotmetering for film that is going to be projected? How does it deal with blown out highlights or thin shadows? For example I know that with BW if a go darker than Zone III, I'm gonna start losing shadow detail. Beyond Zone 8 I'm going to start losing highlight details. Can I change the bulb intensity to tweak exposure? How contrasty will the projected image appear? Thanks!

Okay yes you can I fixed an under exposed super 8 film and most projectors have a light intensity or contrast dial which will help deal with bad shadow detail but it is less effective for plbkack and white film.

Yes. There is one lab who can make prints from ECN-2 negatives in Super8 format. It is called Andec Filmtechnik, and is based in Berlin, Germany.

Hm, i wonder. I have just bought a beautiful Eumig Mark 610D, very similar to yours actually, it is just slightly larger, is made mostly of metal, and has more settings for framerates. But, when switching framerates, at certain higher speeds, it will pull down a light-blueish lens in front of the film. Why is this? I see you have it too. Mine does also have a similar thing, only it is not a lense, rather a metal disc with a few holes in it, to just let dim light through when threading. I didn't see mention of it in the manual either.

Duncanthrax these 600 series projectors made by eumig that have the slow motion setting all have those two filters. One is glass and the second is a screen. They are used because your lamp is very hot and under certain frame rates it will burn your film. At the standard 18fps the film cant burn because of its speed. The 610 is exactly the same as the 614 with the only difference in appearance. The 610 is from the 70’s and the 614 from the 80’s.

I have some 8mm movies that I want to digitise. I bought a wolverine but the film keeps getting stuck and I have to constintly pull it through. The film look kind of moldy, maybe that is why it get stuck. What options do I have to digitise these memoris of my father?

When film is moldy or damaged it can be very difficult and especially for doing it yourself at home you probably will not get good results. The Wolverine has many problems and I wouldn't use it when looking for quality scans. You'll likely need to seek out a lab/transfer house that offers scanning services and talk to them about the state that the film is in. It will likely be expensive, but the results that you can get from a proper machine are often unachievable in any other way. There are many places out there, but I recommend Frame Discreet (Toronto), Film Photography Project (New York), Pro8mm (L.A.)

on the note of sound super 8 there is splicing tape for making J And L cuts on super 8 which makes me curious about getting a sound super film and splicing the sound track on to my silent recording and then recording over it. Have you tried that?

That’s a really interesting idea! I haven’t tried anything like that but it would be cool to get some sort of audio going on the film. It would be tricky I’d imagine, even just based on how small that magnetic tape strip is to remove it and attach it to a new roll.

I have a few questions because I'm going to attempt to make a Super 8 projector instead of buying one 1. For the spinning shutter, do you know exactly how fast it is going? Or is it just going fast? 2. Does how fast the take up wheel is spinning determine how fast the film is going (I.e. 18 fps) or is it the spinning shutter that spins at the 18 fps? 3. For slide projectors, the light has to go through a condenser lens, a glass panel, another condenser lens and then the actual slide film. For a super 8 projector, does the light go through the super 8 film and then the projector lens?

Hi, thats an interesting project, let me help. 1: the shutter rotates at 18fps but in one revolution blinds the film three times and transports the film once each revolution. 2: the take up reel does not determine the speed. The runs on a slipper clutch. The claw and sprockets determine the speed. If the take up reel will pull to hard on the film it will destroy it. 3: yes and no, the setup in modern (say 1970’s ) projectors is a halogen lamp with reflector and no extra lensen. Older ones have a seperate reflector and condensor lens. If you search here on youtube how a filmprojector works there is much information about the setup of a projector

A Super 8 cartridge needs to be developed after it's run through the camera. The developed film is returned to you on a reel. You can't play a cartridge. The film in a cartridge is undeveloped, or maybe not even exposed.

No it’s just physically too large and 8mm projectors aren’t built for it

Few things to note. 1) 24fps is the "industry" standard, not a "digital" standard. It's been around since the very beginning of 35mm projection and electric motor drive. So Super 8 cameras and projectors that do not shoot 24fps, are not really industry standard format. Thus, when you convert them to digital, you need to go through a frame duplicating process since the transfer machines can only run at 24fps. 2) Super 8 audio was actually two stripes, one on either side of the film. 3) Magnetic audio can still be used via older cartridges OR striped onto finished films by Andec. 4) All projectors should be gone through before running because generally, those rubber belts wear out and the plastic gears can crack. There are very few projectors that can withstand the test of time without falling apart. So it's actually a wise idea to first open the back up and check the main belt before putting film through it.

The largest benefit of shooting onto a negative is that multiple positive prints can be struck from the same negative. Negative films are designed to be copied. That's how professional movies were typically made. Positive films, in contrast, weren't really meant to be copied. They were only meant to be viewed. But for amateur home movies, copying usually isn't important, so home movies would usually be shot on reversal film, which is developed directly into a positive, with no printing involved.

It only works if you can get a positive print made and Andec is the only lab in the world that’s able to do that! If you aren’t able to send it to Andec you would would need to shoot a reversal film instead. Vision3 film comes out as a negative so you can’t project it without having a print made, so if people are looking for a film type to simply shoot and project without having to send it to a specific lab to get a print made then they will need to shoot either Tri-X or Ektachrome.

Yup! So Tri-X and Ektachrome go through special chemicals and come out as a positive image. Vision3 film is a different kind of film and when it goes through its specific chemical process it will be a negative image. Normally you would want to shoot one of these ‘Reversal’ films (Tri-X or Ektachrome) that comes out as a positive to project, but Andec is actually setup to make a positive print from the negative that you shoot! It’s an extra step, but does mean you can shoot and ultimately project your Vision3 film if you send it to Andec and have them make a print!

@@srenhaandbk7904 That is actually the best way to do it for sure! It's just hard with Super 8 because Andec is the only place in the world to be able to create those prints from Super 8 negatives so if you can use that lab I would recommend it! Negatives are more flexible with exposure and can capture more detail in the shadows and highlights. You can over expose them a bit for some really good results! Reversal film is much more strict with exposure and has different characteristics. It won't handle over-exposure or under-exposure very well at all and you will either have very dark shadows or very blown out highlights with no detail. Negatives really are the easiest to work with and lets you store your original copy for safekeeping!

Do you know you are missing a part of your eumig projector? When playing super 8 film there should be a little adapter on the front spool axle to let a super8 spool fit better. When you dont use the adapter chances are the reel falls off because there is too much space between the axle and the reel hole. Its the standard 8 size you now have the super8 reel on.

I've actually got it! It sits in right beside the lens for safe keeping when not in use. I've used it fine without it as well, the reel wiggles only a bit less with the adapter on it.

A projector is only necessary if you shoot Tri-X or Ektachrome film and wish to watch the actual film by physically projecting it! If you get a digital scan of the film done then that also allows you to easily watch your footage.

@@hafsa-kn5bl You can have any film scanned, but only reversal film (film that is designed to be developed as a positive) is meant for projection. Color negative films need to be scanned, Tri-X and Ektachrome reversal film can be projected or scanned.

Actually you CAN use the sound recording features found in some of these projectors. While prestriped film is no longer made, there are post striping services that can add a sound stripe to processed, silent film.
