Thx so much. Too many videos assume that you know what wire on the starter does what. Once you explained that either wire can go on the C or Herm connection, things made sense.

A tech. put this on my heat pump today because the compressor was having trouble starting. It was not tripping the breaker, though. The capacitor tested good, but he installed this anyway. It seems to work better so far. Another company came out 4 times before I asked for a second opinion and the new guy installed this booster.

You should do a video about the different kind of hard start kits available and what applications they are best for. Like the three wire or the ones with electric or mechanical potential relays

Thanks for this, I make the service to a some type of frankenstein, for some reason the previous technician take out all the capacitors and potential relay and just wired this between R and S wire, I was not able to figure out what was this thing, for some reason the previous technician don't install the run capacitor and the compresor stopped in the middle of the cycle.

There is no mention with the Hard Start Capacitor Kit and what to do with the relay (I have a Carrier HN51KC024 coil relay in the compressor box)? As the kit has an attached unit as part of the kit, do I keep in the relay connected as is placed currently? Also, when I purchase the kit, is it a universal one or do I have to purchase a specific type or specification which will work with my Run Capacitor?

another video say's this Suppco "Super Boost" kit does not really have a relay but a thermistor. I prefer to use this Suppco " Supper Boost" kit as it's cheaper than the one with the separate relay for $40... How does a newbie like me know which one to use? I have a 15,000 btu window unit so I'm guessing the SPP6 is going to be better than the SPP5... Thanks for your great videos!

A larger start cap would only be used for larger systems so for a small system that is less than 2 tons 24,000 btu/hr go ahead and use the SPP5, thanks

hi. im hvac student now. im enjoying watching your video. i have couple of question. 1. are hard start kit and start capacitor same things? 2. most of unit have run capacitor. but the start wire from comp and condenser fan connect to run capacitor. i dont understand why start wire from comp and condenser fan have to wire run capacitor. i feel run wires have to connect to run capacitor. 3. then when do we use potential relay instead of hard start kit. i really appreciate your work. thanks a lot!!

A start capacitor does not have a potential relay, current relay, or ptc to open the electrical circuit after the motor is powered. A hard start kit from a equipment manufacturer is equipped with a potential relay to open the circuit up and shut the start cap out of the circuit. The Superboost in the video had 2 ptc's on the top of the cap which take the start cap out of the circuit, thanks. Start caps is connected onto the start winding of the on the dual cap. They connect to the herm and the other lead may connect to the 120v leg on the c terminal of the run cap or the contactor. The kick out of the circuit after the motor has started.

So the hard start kits are basically larger capacitors that allow for greater starting torque, but have some method of automatically disconnecting them once it's up to speed, because they can't be left in place continuously without overheating. Maybe OEM setups don't use them by default to avoid possible issues if the disconnect mechanism fails, which could end up overheating and damaging the compressor itself. Otherwise the only drawback may be just a few bucks extra cost, which may be more the driving factor for them.

Hello, I have a 2 ton unit and the compressor barely comes on, and then goes off, I think it is stuck! I saw below that you said "Basically, we don't add them (5-2-1 Hard Start) unless the motor is having a problem starting." My compressor IS having trouble starting. Would you suggest the 5-2-1 hard start units or would the SPP5 or 6 work? My fan blows, and sometimes if I listen close enough I can hear the compressor with a quiet buzz, in and out. The temp maintains until it gets hot, then goes from 75 to 78; the pipes outside show condensation, but I can hear clearly that the compressor is not on. The upstairs unit sits right next to it, and I hear the compressor working just fine. Would a hard start work?

Hi I was wondering if you might have any guesses for my situation which is: Sometime within the last several years the guys servicing my system added a hard start capacitor (if they told me about this I have forgotten). Anyway, when we first turned the AC on this year it tripped the breaker. However, after resetting the breaker it ran fine but again trips the breaker at seemingly random intervals. Perhaps heat of day, sometimes once, sometimes twice, causes this? I did find a fairly plugged intake filter downstairs (since we don't turn on the air downstairs I mistakenly thought that air was not being drawn in there) which I replaced and that seemed to alleviate the issue for about a week. Then it started doing the same thing again, once or twice a day, usually in the afternoon it trips the breaker but will reset and run fine. Yesterday we replaced the run capacitor (which subsequently checked out within tolerance) but shortly afterward it tripped the breaker again but also again it reset and has been running fine. An AC guy told me to get ready to replace the unit/compressor as it's R22. The system is 15+/- years old. Sounds like the only thing left to check is the voltage to the compressor but that is probably grasping at straws. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help. Great videos, thanks!!!

What ended up happening my breaker has been tripping... I just had the capacitor replaced with a. Hard start kit.... we will see if it does the trick over the next few days as where I live gets very very hot.

Broke down and bought a new unit. One thing the company warned me about is double filtering which puts extra strain on the system--since I have a filter at the unit they told me not to filter at the return air intakes. Thought I'd mention this in case this led to a premature death of my compressor and might prevent it for someone else.

@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 4 жыл бұрын
There should be a common wire coming from the contactor to the capacitor. At least that is what we have on air conditioning units. We just add it at the contactor since they are connected by a 3" long wire and there are more tabs there.

Is it wise to install a hard start kit (I've got the 5-2-1 kit I think it is called), and a scroll compressor on my home unit. I've read the kit will significantly reduce the motor starting current which from an old motor guy like me is a good thing. I had an HVAC service tech tell me I should not add the kit unless I need it, because of mechanical blah, blah issues. What little I know about scroll compressors informs me they have a minimal or no valve train. How might the startup mechanical be impacted by lower motor starting current and a bit more starting torque? Thanks for any input.
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 6 жыл бұрын
Basically, we don't add them unless the motor is having a problem starting. It would be bad to potentially weaken and overheat the thermal overload limit on a scroll as it is glued with resin in place on top of the windings inside the compressor. He was probably just saying anything added after OEM could be a concern for the manufacturer in a warranty issue, that is all. The start cap takes itself out within a fraction of a second due to the ptc thermister, thanks

I replaced a faulty relay switch with an RCO810 Supco 3 'N 1 Start device. I used it to replace a defective relay switch (clicks once per minute, rattles inside). It instructs the user to remove any capacitor (my fridge didn't have one) and overload switch (my fridge had a "guardette" mounted against the compressor). So I removed the guardette, and wired in the RCO810 per instructions. I'm wondering though if I should have removed the guardette from the circuit since I suspect it's some kind of thermal protection device or maybe I should wire it back in? The fridge is working but I'm concerned I may have removed a vital component.

Is it really beneficial to install this on every AC unit which is working just fine? I have heard mixed inputs. Some say it help reduce start stress on compressors and some say it put load on compressors with hard start? So confusing. I have done some research and it does reduce the Inrush Amperage however not sure if it elongates the compressor life or shortens it?
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 5 жыл бұрын
I can only go by manufacturers and they typically say to only install their hard start kits for compressor life but yeah a start cap with a potential relay or ptc thermistor does reduce inrush, thanks!
