I have the 5/6 version of this reel on a 6# Sougayilang 9 ft. rod that came as a package deal off of Wish. No complaints as yet. After becoming proficient using this set-up i went to my local fly shop and spent some serious money on a good rig. My wish rig is still used by my son or friends of mine that dont have their own. One of the best purchases ive ever made. Great video guys.

I totally agree with you there on the local tackle shop, he got me started with a £50 rod/reel/fly line combo and I haven't looked back since, if I order something (live in Germany), he'll get it over to me in 10 days ,if he doesn't have it in stock he'll ask if I want to order it from the big tackle shop in Stirling and I'll always say no, he can order it and send it over, a couple of pounds more spent at the local shop is money well spent. Rant over!

I've the same reel in 5/6 size about two years, £13 delivered from ebay, at least 40 stillwater trips, without dramas, feels a little tinny and drags not the smoothest but superb bang for buck. I also have a £25 Airflo airtec that has a lovely drag and solid feel, plenty trout and Carp to high doubles on that one Great Video 👍
@IBandAndyFishing5 жыл бұрын
Firstly Barry many thanks for the kind comment! Glad you've had a good experience with the reel - in truth having issed it I can't see anything wrong with it! I agree about the drag, but then again the reel costs the same as a dozen flies!

You can buy these unbranded on Ebay or Aliexpress, postage paid direct from the factory and also with spare spools. I have a 9/10 (really a 7/8) with a couple of spare spools. Reel foot screws came loose but were easily fixed with a screw driver and some Lock Tight. Brilliant value and service.
@terrycoging28882 жыл бұрын
Excellent review Andy - and excellent fishing. I bought 3 of these reels + spare spools 4 years ago because I needed something cheap to hold several lines that were being tested and developed. I used 5/6 and 6/7 sizes. Generally speaking they have done the job. The drag system worked well on reservoir trout. After extensive use 3 fault have come to light. 1. They are free running forwards and can overrun accidentally causing loose coils on the spool. 2, When changing spools while in the boat I lost the tiny outer bearing. 3. Clearance between the spool and cage can be excessive and allow leader to become trapped.

I got a 35 dollar fly rod/reel combo from a walmart here in the US (about 28ish pounds) and it might not be the best rod/reel ever, but it's something to get you started, and I've caught 12+ pound fish with it. People dont seem to understand that you dont need 500 dollar rods, or thousands of dollars to have fun in this sport.
@josepha.correiaiii88555 жыл бұрын
When I learned to fly fish I learned on an old 8.5 Ft bamboo rod and a reel that my great granddad gave to me. No idea what brand it was, it was so old that all the branding had worn off well before I got it. It wasn't made with drag had to learn how to palm it to slow the fish. I did replace the old mouse eaten line with new Cortland L4. If you can learn to present a fly with that rig you can master any rig, at least that was his theory. Who in the hell wants to pay the price for an Orvis rig when a Shakespeare rig will work just as well for a hell of a lot less. I was always taught it is skill of the fisherman that catches the fish, not the name brand of the gear.

Its not a 17 quid reel, its a 25quid reel due to postage, something often overlooked when buying from e bay/amazon etc. Glad you raised the issue of the local tackle shop-something I was going to mention myself. e bay etc cannot: sort you out quickly if you have a problem with a reel etc, can't let you try the reel on your rods to check the fit and balance, often don't sell additional spools, can't tell you what local waters are fishing well or not, advise you where to fish for particular species etc. Example: there is (or used to be) a tiny tackle shop in Bakewell, the two lads in there had lots of local knowledge about fishing for wild fish by paying the farmer 5quid, free fishing stretches etc, plus they sold lots of those small tools/gadgets/bits of kit that made life easier on the water. In my department (county) there is only one surviving privately owned tackle shop left-use em or lose em. You can't stop off at e bay and blether about the one that got away or get the news that Smithy just caught a 40lb pike on single maggot pole fishing.
@IBandAndyFishing5 жыл бұрын
It seemed fair to not include the shipping cost because, well, you wouldn't include it in a domestic product's value. £6 from China to my house in a week seemed very reasonable, that's the cost many retailers charge for a small parcel these days! Got to keep those tackle shops going 👍👍👍

@@IBandAndyFishing I think what I meant was, the reel might cost around 25quid if a tackle shop sold it, (probably less-more like 18quid maybe) but as I went on to say, you couldn't actually try the reel on a rod etc if bought from a box shifting outfit.
@IBandAndyFishing5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure on your costing there Jaques. Let's say the factory are selling them for £15, greys/snowbee/ scierra will then sell it to the retailer for 30, and the retailer will want to sell it for 60. This is the 21st century purchasing dilemma- we can all get these products way cheaper by going direct like in this case, but macro-economically we might be shooting ourselves in the foot by doing so! It's a really tough one

In UK fly fishing for trout the drag is immaterial. Just set it so the reel doesn’t overrun when stripping line off to cast and forget it. I use an old Hardy Marquis Multiplier with a click pawl and have never needed a disc drag to fight a fish.

You'll find this will split opinion, particularly with Euro nymphing styles when you're tight to the flies and not handling any line. We've got a vlog where I catch a big wild brown from a river (PB Brown Trout), this fight would have been a real struggle without a drag system 👍👍
