That is awesome. Though if I was that person I would feel guilty getting rid of it if I ever needed the space for some reason. Would have to spend a lot of time finding someone else to give it to who won't just flip it. Probably would just lend it to a video game museum or something.

Ian : great point regarding the mod who diminished the gesture of Tim giving away a copy of pal SE to a collector who wanted it. By mocking this, that mod proved that he only cared about the MONETARY value of the game, and not about what it meant to the collector. EXPOSED

I understand that money is practically an inevitability in a collector's market, but it's disappointing to me when what a video game's monetary worth is becomes more important than the game itself-- or playing/enjoying the game. It's even more disappointing to read or hear about collectors being so petty that they blacklist or ban other collectors because money. These aren't classical paintings or even baseball cards that we're talking about here. They're video games. Items created and manufactured with the purpose of being played and enjoyed-- or perhaps being given to someone else as gifts to play and enjoy. Want to get involved in commodities? Chase after oil futures or pork bellies and play those markets.

that's how I feel about collecting for Sega CD. No copy protection, I "own" every game to play on real hardware. then the resellers try to get $200 for lunar 2. i did pay a bit for vay, lunar, shining force, but much less still than the going ebay rate. Should I spend 600 bucks for Snatcher, when I have a perfectly playable copy?

I think Pat said this a long time ago and I agree with it 100%. If you invest in videogames for financial gain, you're an idiot. Collecting is one thing. Expecting to get a lot of money for selling something is another thing. But to treat games like you would treat gold or stocks is downright stupid. Stocks will go up and down. The price of gold will go up and down. However, a game will only go one way. The value will go up so much but eventually, circumstances will occur that will cause the value to go down and when games go down in value, they never go back up. Ever. You should get into collecting for the sake of collecting, not to be rich.
@jsully2413

+Jon-Erich Smith Yep, it's not a market meant for profit, at least not anymore. Maybe if you were lucky and originally had rare games/consoles/gaming things you could make a nice profit now, but buying a rare game at a high price and selling it in a few years at a slightly higher price is as stupid of an investment decision as you can make. Time is money, and if your ROI after years is weaker than it would be if you played the stock market, then you're wasting time and potential money for a weaker ROI.

I'm only a lurker on that site, but Pat got some right and some wrong. The main thing was that multiple mods weren't being neutral mods, and things got messy. But the VAST majority of posters on the main threads Pat is talking about were all normal rational people, lol. Just google the posts if you need proof. Atwood removed some of his own posts, but the point is what you will see are a select few idiots arguing with Tim or being passive-aggressive, with the other 90% of the posters pretty much sitting there with popcorn and discussing the topics much like we are. The Puppywaffles thread is out there too. The part Pat didn't mention was Puppy basically ranted against the community as a whole in the same post. A lot of people in the thread said the gift was really cool, but at the same time a donation in itself isn't special in that people donate to each other all the time and do not make public announcements. Kind of like when we roll our eyes when celebs make a fuss giving to charity when charity in silence is often best. That's not Tim's fault though. Anyway, point being, Pat and Ian were kind of taking this out of context. NintendoAge is like any other forum. I only venture collectors corner, but they are mostly just a bunch of collectors, newbies and vets. I have no idea what Pat's full history is with the site, but this Atwood issue is really him exposing a select few people in that community, not the whole site. And Tim has exposed other people in the past that were into far worse behaviors, like people reselling resealed games as legit.

So basically the site is moderated by resellers. Sounds lovely. To be honest, I see a lot of retro-related spaces going that way. A lot of the people who grew up with this stuff have already got all they want or they're selling, which leaves all the new kids coming in to the hobby and I feel like since a lot of them didn't grow up with it, all they can really relate to is the monetary value.

The worst abuse of moderator power I witnessed was when I was a senior member of the Stern Fan Network (now defunct). The website's owner got a job with Howard's Sirius Satellite Radio station and became an on-air host of a show called "Super Fan Roundtable". Howard had complained on the air that several members of the SFN were being too critical of him and his show, particularly his constant recaps of watching "Survivor", going to fancy restaurants with his trophy wife, and hours-long discussions of "American Idol". This put the SFN's owner in an awkward position. The result, whether he ordered it or not, or if Stern was a direct influence in the decision, was that the moderators were coming down on members who were criticizing the show's direction, Howard's wife, or Howard himself. Some were given suspensions, others outright banned. Seeing the writing on the wall, several of us quit the SFN in protest. I not only quit, but I never listened to the show again after that. It was all such pointless drama, all because Stern couldn't take criticism about wearing that goofy wig.

In the thread bashing him, lots of people were also defending him, but the vast majority of NA folks (including myself) just stayed out of it. Tim made a Trump 2016 spammy troll thread and got a two week ban. Anyone else would have received the same, because that's just silly. He wasn't just permabanned for no reason. Please don't trash the entire community because of a few elitists. 99% of the people there are just looking to have fun collecting and gaming and are the very opposite of elitists.

All the mod-edited posts I've ever seen have been for good reasons, like removing sensitive information or a a recent ebay link to prevent the buyer from getting backdoored. When threads get locked it's also for a good reason, but I do understand how it can be seen as the "mod getting the last word" when it happens to controversial threads.

Forum moderation has become a problem on many of the forums and sites I visit. What happened to Mr. Atwood is unfortunate but not surprising. Many moderators out there are small minded people who ultimately want to create echo chambers for themselves. The forum or site they moderate is the only place where they have a modicum of authority in their hapless lives.
@mitchawesomefoot6139
@mitchawesomefoot6139 8 жыл бұрын
+D-Rome Agreed. What seems to happen is the moderators push to see what the admin will let them get away with. Admins tend to get burnt out and let it go as it's easier to let it slide than replace people. So then the forum ends up with moderators' cliques of friends pushing to see what they can get away with and at that point you have 10% or less of the place running their own rules, making 90% of the posts and scaring off members both old and new. There's a reason most people have moved onto twitter or other social outlets.

typical nintendoage bullshit. there's a reason most collectors stay away from there. Very greedy. It's a real shame too, cause I enjoy Atariage for the most part,, but the rest of their sites seem to be people trying to control how much certain games are, and in general trying to control the market. Especially Nintendoage. Just drama filled collectors who are trying to raise the value of games. Of course not everyone there is bad, but the bad apples are plentiful. They just keep banning everyone who isn't sucking up to them, its really sad. Not to mention what a mod/admin of said site said about receiving a gift, let me leave this doozy here: ""I'm glad to see gifts passed throughout the community. But also please keep this in perspective before you patronize him. He gave you a free copy of one of the most common sealed games on NES, not quite Dance Aerobics / Anticipation but pretty common in the French Version. For a collector of his size, that is like Bill Gates giving you a free Xbox One game. A gift should be thanked but keep it in perspective. "" Greedy greedy people.

Worst moderation thing I saw was on Macrossworld in their Sc Fi board. A couple of us liked talking about Battletech. One mod locked our thread and banned further discussion insisting there were plenty of other boards out there with Battletech on it. Gundam and Star Wars threads on this same board for this exact purpose were cool though. It was basically one douchebag mod who hated Battletech. Ok, the guy who banned MLP discussion on Something Awful's TV sub forum was worse. Because he was discovered to have been a registered sex offender. He probably thought it was competition for his dating pool. :(

+captainthrall I saw most of his posts. I was honestly on Pats side at the beginning of this. Yea he showed that that there are always bigger collectors out there and that you never know what private collectors have. However, he was never humble about it. Besides his Trump post (there is a specific thread to post about politics btw) where he was just being a child, he also created a thread where he offered a free poster to whoever can tell him three things that he accomplished. Basically bragging about what he has done. I mean if you have rare stuff that a lot of people wan't thats cool but don't be a douche about it,. Just because other people are being a douche doesn't mean you have to be one too. I haven't checked up on the threads but if the mods did delete them thats bs too, let the information be public.

Nintendo Age sounds like a bunch of used-car salesmen. It's a place you could go get an expertise or - god-forbid - buy a used Toyota. Nothing wrong with that. Sometimes people need to buy or sell used Toyotas. But as soon as the salesman starts bragging about driving a Porsch, you probably want to take your business elsewhere - unless you really want that used Toyota and hear all those great stories about all those expensive cars you will never drive.

I was a member of a few band related forums where this behavior happened. Disgusted me totally. One time I had a long convo with one forum owner/admin who wanted to shut his forum down because the regular patrons of the forum were telling new members (fans of the band) to "get the f*ck out" and just being horrible to them, but he didn't want to end his forum because it was his "baby". He had no idea how to fix the problems, as several of the people were mods. Also to be noted there was a donation accessed "flame forum" where you could flame other people unmoderated. I shit you not.

I think a lot of the same arguments are made by Vinyl collectors and hipsters who want the prices and values of Vinyl to be as high as possible. While music enthusiasts and audiophiles just want the record to be priced fairly for their quality. I'm just looking to to buy records I want to listen to, if I'm not going to listen to it, I'm not going to buy it. I hate it when collectors say, "you should have bought... it wasn't the version with the art book, why did you even bother... A best of, that's worthless" and etc. I don't care if the cover has some signs of wear, not buying to frame and hang the album on my wall, I'm not buying to re-sell, and I'm not buying if there's only one or two songs I enjoy. I want to sit down and and listen to the whole album. It would be the same for someone buying classic games they plan on playing vs collectors who will keep it on their shelf and just watch its value go up. Just the other day I was at a swapmeet, and ran into a guy I've bought from before trying to downsize his collection and find a good home for his records. I'm looking at what he has, everything is priced based on record quality and were very fair. I'm pulling out records inspecting them for scratches and we're talking about changing styles, how modern artists aren't inspired anymore, different bands/artists of the 60/70s, their influences, how they really cared about their work and etc. It was a conversation between generations sharing a common love of music and Vinyl. He sold the the three albums I wanted for the price of one. Then this guy my age (20s) shows up with a bag of antique hand tools and asks if he has $1 records. The seller comments, "anything worth a dollar would have to be so scratched up, it clicks, skips, and sound like bacon when played. Those records belong in the trash" The guy then asks if he has any Punk, to which the seller says no. The guy then proceeds to pick out all the Hank Williams Albums. The seller had other really good country albums with Patsy Cline, Carl Perkins, and others, but the guy passed over them without a glance. When pressed by the seller as to why the guy likes Hank Williams, the guy could only say that "Hank Williams is the only country I like" The seller asks what kind of record payer the guy has and he can't remember the brand or model. The guy even says it hasn't had a working needle (cartridge) for six years, but he's about to buy one. The seller charged him the sticker price knowing he was just looking to resell them at twice the price.

As a member who frequents NintendoAge often (one of the 'good ones' that sides with Mr. Atwood and defends your channel), there's a bit more to this story. I love your podcast but my heart sinks every time Pat insults my favorite site. It's hard for me to watch when I see such a different thing than you do. Some of the best, most generous people I've ever met frequent that site, and it's a shame a small minority of people can ruin the site's image. Now I'm glad you acknowledge that there are good people on the site, but as you can see from the comments below, most people are reacting to this video with vitriol and swearing off NintendoAge forever. So Tim did have an EPIC first post. To most of us, he was a hero. And yes, a very small population of sealed 'old blood' collectors posted their discontent on the matter, but by and large people were supportive of his awesome stash and awesome attitude. Tim hadn't posted much on the forums at that point, maybe two posts. And to me that was brilliant. It gave his words more weight, more of a legendary status, and his mission was indeed accomplished. But then he started posting more and more, diminishing his original point. He had about 38 posts I believe before he was banned, and he seemed to be getting darker and saltier with his later posts, repeatedly calling out people that he hates and why he hates them, creating lists of people he won't deal with and making the lists public. Why wasn't he joining discussions? Talking about collecting? Playing games? Having fun? I found that rather odd. And granted some of the people he libel'd probably deserved it. Which ironically is one of the same problems you have with NintendoAge in general, and Tim was doing just that! Now I don't know exactly why he got banned ... but I wouldn't be surprised if libel was a big part of it. I'm not sure if the Puppywaffles thread was edited or not, but originally he made an extremely long post that was not just about receiving the sealed Kirby--which was great--but he also took it upon himself to damn all of NintendoAge. It was a very immature 'Puppywaffles and Tim versus everyone else on the entire website' kind of post. He did not acknowledge that good people exist on the website, and he made it a PSA/lesson of the day/told you so/soapbox kind of thing. That's what rubbed people wrong about it. He made blanket statements about the entire community, which wasn't fair to those of us in support of Atwood. Puppywaffles should have just posted about how Tim gave him a sealed game and let the writing on the wall do the talking. That would have been far more effective and not created such a backlash. Finally, as somebody who visits the site every day, I've never noticed Moderators closing a thread while getting in the last word. I've seen moderators close up threads when there was clearly more to discuss, however, and I love your idea about any mod who has posted in a thread should not be allowed to lock it. But I've never noticed Moderators getting in the last word while locking a thread. That would be immature and drive me up the wall, and fortunately that is something that doesn't seem to happen much, if at all, on NintendoAge.

Tim didn't do any of that because he was busy getting threats and flamed. Would you take part in a community that continually showed malcontent for you? Stop trying to defend the scumbags. If they unbanned Atwood and would weed out tje handful of people using it to make under table deals it'd be different but it's been a problem for a very long time. And why Tim got involved at all. And it's STILL a problem they've done nothing to fix. This shit didn't just start over night. Inflating the prices of games like these few people do makes the hobby less and less accessible to people. You're really happy with that?

+Mustang McKraken Like I said, not everyone is a scumbag -- I'm not defending those who are. But if a community gets large enough there's bound to be a few elitists and resellers around. I have found this in some other online communities, where a certain mindset takes over, and ruins what is supposed to be a community of like minded individuals who are passionate about said thing. I hope Tim doesn't let that experience change his outlook and passion for NES games. I am glad that Pat and IAN are not drones like the mods and members of NA. I once was going to join NA, but even in the new members thread I saw that a huge majority of posts were from Banned members. If the person wanted a particular title and Tim Atwood was nice enough to gift it to them, does the monetary really value? I mean, the guy could have wanted a copy of Combat on Atari 2600 or Super Mario Bros on the NES and receive it as a git and be happy with it. Monetary value doesn't really matter when someone is getting an item that they want as a git. BTW did you miss the point of these videos they have been making on this topic? they are saying these things ARE NOT as hard to find as people perceive them to be because you never know who is sitting on a massive collection like Tim is, or maybe in some warehouse there are skids and skids full of "hard to find" games.

Tim if you read these comments, any chance you can do Canada a favor and get some games in to the market here haha. Some game stores like to think it's cool to charge a good 300 dollars more than what they even go for on ebay. For example Little Samson (loose). Not that I could ever afford a copy but when I saw it in store and he was asking 1700 (Canadian)I knew right away just what type of prices I'd be dealing with. I'm all for making money especially on the rarer and popular stuff but no need to charge over ebay prices otherwise I may as well save the road trip and browse ebay. End rant. I was banned and everything I did on the server from building stadiums to sky islands was all gone from me. I even built a water palace for someone on the server under the ocean it was based on a guilty until proven innocent system and when I went on the forums because I was banned twice for something I never did loseing $100 dollars USD I told them I was done the last time they did that they took everything I had and destroyed it I spent hours gathering materials just to sell them in game shop, and they said I would have to record everything I did with time stamps so I wouldn't be "proven" guilty again. They stole $100 dollars from me and the locked the thread after i said the mod was evil. Till this day it had the best layout of a server but, if I ever had one it would be innocent until proven guilty and we would all decide through video evidence if someone is guilty not some screenshots of where I was.

I swore them off a long time ago and now the only places I'll post anything is on my Facebook profile and here on KZbin/Google+. But that's not to say everybody on a forum like NA is bad, it's just those handful of resellers and scumbags who can ruin it for you. The owners really need to crack down on this behavior. Not necessarily selling and buying, but the elitism that shuns collecting for keeps/fun instead of value.

Poor tim atwood! Nintendo age banned me for asking stupid questions but being a new collector needed to be asked.
