So incredibly cool! Loved seeing the props go into beta pitch after landing. The Super Connie is my favorite classic airliner while the 747 is my favorite recent one.

Flew in one in 1956. Looks like that engine needs the valve lash checked. What a sexy airplane!

My father was on one of the first Super G transatlantic flights for TWA. He always loved that plane.

UPDATE: 4/18/2023. Sadly this beautiful Connie and other aircraft at the museum are in imminent danger of being sold for scrap.

That is a sweet video. I remember flying on one of the remaining Air Force C-118 aircraft in 1971 at Norton AFB. The start up, taxi, takeoff and landing I remember being a unique "WOW" then and today.

The super connies were the epitome of the piston / propeller commercial aircraft of that time. I only wished that I was old enough to have flown in one. One of my favorite airplanes.

This is a great video. Very professionally made for a video camera from the late 1980s. Good color and detail. The plane is even nicer! Thanks for posting.

I was working at TWA when the Connies were retired - they were all in a field at the overhaul base (now KCI) - one day a shredder came in & sliced them all up & hauled away the pieces - so sad! Bob Forgette

Thanks for explaining how most of TWA's Connies met their eventual demise.

patti forgette, what a waste. No one thought of donating some to museums?

It would be neat if we could see this bird in one of the legacy airline liveries.

Well, it's presently and will probably stay in its TWA markings and colors circa 1956.

To bad they have not flown this plane like in 20 years after spending all that time and money to get it airworthy. Same thing happened with the restored Eastern DC-7B . It's last flight was over 10 years ago. Just kind of sad......Would be nice to see them back on the airshow circuit again(or at least Oshkosh) but I guess that won't happen.

I agree that it's too bad that this Super Connie hasn't flown for a long time. I seem to recall someone telling me its last flight was in 2006. I think one of the issues that keeps these large propliners grounded, besides money, is the lack of talent needed to maintain them. When the Save-A-Connie, Super Constellation first started flying again in 1988 there were still a lot of former TWA mechanics alive that had worked on this same aircraft many years earlier. They knew a "Connie" maintenance wise like the back of their hands. Of course, the Save-A-Connie group also had a fair amount of ex-TWA pilots with hundreds or thousands of hours flying Lockheed Constellations. Well, it was really nice while it lasted. I'm glad I got three flights on it!

Would these engines spit out less flames if they were leaned out a tad or do they just spit fire all the time?
@WAL_DC-6B9 жыл бұрын
+Jay Sims I believe the flames out of the exhaust stacks are a result of running "full rich" when landing or taking off. So, yes, probably leaning the fuel mixture controls would cut back on the flames.
