very adjustable design, I make one using almost only parts (except 555 and two resistors) taken from old usb charger. Some changes was needed as high voltage transistor was used instead of mosfet and current draw is little bit higher but I'll not use 9V battery as power device so it's not a issue for me.

can someone *please* tell me what other transistors can i use? I can not buy that FET in Serbia, and i do not want to wait multiple weeks to ship it to my home from China Edit: I found some high voltage MOSFET and it works. It's more powerful than i have thought! I have used 2N80 transistor

Today i have purchased all the parts in 25 RS it less than a 20 cent . And i have completed WOW what a circuit. wonderful .and works wonderfully with li ion battery rather than 9 volt battery. Thanks to this chanal.

Made this yesterday to check tv backlights, works good but just dimly lights them. At 6 volts it puts out 285 volts DC and at 10 volts it puts out over 400 volts. I used an IRF830, a 4.7uf cap@ 450 volts, an inductor at 990 uh and a FUF5402 ultra fast diode, as that's all I had. The only problem is, at 300 - 400 volts, it doesn't light any LEDs except the white ones and the meter gives no indication as to how many volts it takes to light it. Also, when I touch the ends, it gives a small electrical jolt. Any ideas why it doesn't light the LEDs more brightly, or give a voltage reading and why it gives a shock? Thanks.

I had build it like your schematic, but it doesn't work. The 555 is oszillating at 20khz but the Output-Voltage is only nearly 8 Volt. I bought an Inductor with. 900 uH. Is 900 uH right or should it be mH?
@lampesouder
@lampesouder 5 жыл бұрын
Hello, I have also built according to the diagram and it works properly. With 12v input, I have between 300 and 500v output depending on the different coils. Great to test the leds because there are only a few mA. It is actually μH. Test from 200 to 900 μH.

Anshad Edavana, what?
@illchmann
@illchmann 5 жыл бұрын
Anshad Edavana, obviouly you do not know what a joule thief is! It can generate 100V or more with just a single transistor and a handful of passive components. It can act as a current source what is exactly what is needed here.

@illchmann 5 жыл бұрын
Anshad Edavana, google for it, next time read first then ask 😜

Possible. You definitely have to make the windings non-symmetrical. The base feed would be wound as normal (around 10 turns), but you might need 50 to 100 turns for the collector/LED connection to be able to get the voltage boost you need. A joule thief is based on a simple design that's easy to make.

I made one ages back or shall I say I converted a fly zapper to a LED tester. The fly zapper works on a joule thief circuit. Here in the UK it only cost me £1 as we have shops over here called Poundland that sold the zappers.

How many loops and wires are L1 wrapped?
@therealjammit
@therealjammit 5 жыл бұрын
That's an unknown. Different types of cores will require different number of turns for the same 800 micro henrys. You could try different number of turns until you get to a point where the current draw from the battery is as small as you can get while still getting around 300 volts on the output. You can also try running the 555 timer at different frequencies. If you have the "wrong" inductance for the frequency the 555 is running at you'll get decreased efficiency, but it will still give a voltage boost. Without being able to measure the inductance with an inductance tool I would start off with about 100 turns for a ferrite rod that's about 0.25 inches in width and 1 inch long.
