It depends on the yarn, hook size, and tension. You might want to consider a width of around 6 to 10 inches, but you can adjust it to suit your taste. To estimate yarn make a small swatch with your yarn and hook, see how much yarn you use, and then scale up for your full project. Or you can simply start and estimate as you work along. How many chain stitches should I make for a scarf? Do I understand that I need as many chain links as I want a long scarf?

This pattern is designed to be worked along the length, but it all depends on the look you're going for with your scarf. As for the chains, it depends on how long you want your scarf to be. Just keep measuring as you go along to get your desired length.You could also work the foundation chain for the width if you want a different effect.
