Yeah people just need to follow Mellings instructions. If they say oil it, oil it. If they say rotate the engine 360 degrees, do it. Going beyond what a degreed engineer explicitly states is accomplishing nothing and is the truest form of ignorance. Melling literally makes oil pumps. They are the experts! Great video.

Couple flat washers stacked inside the bypass plug to make the spring a little tighter will easily give ya another 10-20 psi oil pressure and revive a oil pump that was losing pressure as well and yours looks good enough to do just that!

I’ve definitely heard of that method! Also, my oil pump was still good, it’s definitely sitting in the box on the shelf. Figured since I was doing a fresh build, the least I could do is a new pump 🙂

I am an ASE World Class Automotive Technician "Triple Master" and have 22+ Years Working Professionally. In all Brutal honesty I'm not going to say your incorrect and It's not that the internet made it over complicated. (The Smoke em procedure- when you tightened them down could of re-offset the pump gears lol) If you tighten the pump with shims installed you know it's perfect then you remove the shims. If you build an LS engine and you take extra care in making sure everything will come out flawless with your engine build you will shim the pump. This is by far one of the biggest issues with LS engines is Oil Pressure Problems in Pre-AFM/DoD and honestly even after... People aren't wrong when the pump housing has too much slack for the bolts and the gear CAN become uncentered and cause premature wear. You can not shim an oil pump and get 150k out of the engine. Or you can not shim the pump and get 20,000 miles. So why not make sure it's perfect. Not to mention I can't count with 100 hands how many times I've gotten inferior machined parts or defective parts and I want to make sure everything is set up flawlessly. It gives you the opportunity to look at the gears and making sure they mesh perfectly. Melling has a great reputation but everyone makes mistakes and all you can do is do everything in your power to take the time and not make them and throw the crappy parts at your service manager or if your at home family members.... lol... . Thanks for your video...

I saw a video of a guy using a dual indicator on the end of the crank and if you push it down then it moves more than what you'd shim it anyway. So shimming is pointless

Even Melling own utube video pump install instructions say to do it that way, and they make the things. All they say is to prime them after instal before starting. After draining the oil and pulling the filter, im not so sure now. Filter might as well have been filled with grease. Luckily im not seeing metal shavings. Good time to tear the heads off, it needs new gaskets as it was developing a leak on the exhaust side.😮

I know they call it shimming, but really your aligning the pump. Reason Melling doesn't want you to align the pump is because it voids the warranty to open the pump. Something to be said when no engine builder installs a pump without aligning it. Melling does have another install video where they do align it and they state a few times warranty is void. That said, a $20 3d printed tool aligns the pump and can be used to set the timing cover too. More so when oil pumps go out more then water pumps on LS engines. Proven fact if you can Google stuff. Obviously best of luck, but my personal gen 5 with ls3 has 27k miles and the stock pump housing already scored. The reason to align the pump is to ensure you have enough of an oil gap around the outer gear. It is the same concept for a trans pump (99% same tech) and those not only need aligned but are matching sets. All that said, as a custom shop owner, the 10 extra minutes to align the pump saves me time, money and customers. In my personal vehicle I have over $10k in the motor. I will not allow any cam change without a new oil pump just in case in my shop and they are all "shimmed" and over 5 years have had 0 oil issues. Few spun rod bearing for low oil and to hard of cornering, but that wasn't the pumps fault.

GM recommends turning the crank a full rotation. This allows the gears to align. To be 100% honest, I don’t believe it matters much. Most people just throw them on and run them. Sloppy Mechanics also does it and he has thousands of hours inside these motors. Moral of the story, it’s good practice but your good bro.

@@TKSpeedShop that’s great to hear I’ve been getting relieved and scared lol, half the people say always shim/spin crank, others say they’ve never done it and gm themselves doesn’t do it. Only thing I’m kinda relieved of is I’ve seen a lot of people say the crank is hard to turn over if it’s in wrong, and when I was installing my crank bolt it started spinning pretty easily so I had to hold the flywheel with a wrench to tighten it down, so hopefully that means it’s on even enough

You should be good bro, the shimming stuff is so controversial. Now I know some high performance pumps require shimming but when we are talking about OEM pumps or melling, it’s a simple bolt on and go. As long as your crank turns as it should, I wouldn’t worry about a thing 🙂

If you have any contact between the pump rotating parts and that pump housing, you're going to cause damage to the oil pump. That's why some people do the proper job and actually shim them in place. It's easier to do if you just take a one-and-a-half to two thousand shim and put it on the top, push put a 2000 Shem underneath and put it on lengthwise. You don't need to use three shims. Two long ones and put them in lengthwise one on top and one on the bottom. But doing this will cause damage about 30% of oil pumps that are put on that way. Do not listen to this man. Lucky don't cut it. Doing it right does. It's a hell of a lot easier to do it right than it is to do it over!
