I didn't have enough quail to prove a point - but it seems to me that the quail live longer if they're on chicken layer crumbles rather than gamebird layer. I suspect they don't lay quite as well, but if they live longer this might kind of balance out.

Slowly, not a sarcastic answer. Just move them very, very slowly at first and the birds eventually figure it out and know what's up when you come grab the handle. Chickens are good that way too and will sometimes wait excitedly at the edge where they expect fresh pasture to show up.

Yep! No problems with any predators getting in . Even bears and coyotes which we have a lot of here.
