You missed the greatest benefit of the Gold Armor!! If you hold the attack button while wearing the Gold Armor, you can charge your attack! Some of the charges are really useful!

All of the charges are useful. When you release the magical effects you get a second or two of invincibility. Sometimes that's all you need to avoid death.

the best part is, he does know that, he just chose not to talk about it/playthru/demo with it in depth (said from saying it's not as good as in G'nG)...it also is a detriment (in this game especially) for many of the magics unless you time the I-frames just right. "Chest Magic" in particular is rather redundant since you already have the full upgrades possible with gold armor and the shields are virtually useless.

If I was on a deserted island and could only take five SNES games with me, Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts is on that list. The tight gameplay, high difficulty, fascinating world, and gorgeous pixel art keep me coming back all these years. Like Sunset Riders, it’s just a supremely replayable game that somehow never gets boring for me.

I like to think of this series as the first proper horror games. While some entertainment is about a power fantasy, horror is specifically about making the main character feel less powerful. Considering the brutal difficulty, the overwhelming amount of enemies compared to how quickly you can attack, and the fact that the environment itself is even against you, it gives the feeling of impossible odds and that you just made it by the skin of your teeth when you succeed. Even small touches like being reduced to running around in your underwear or being transformed into a baby make the player feel vulnerable. The slow committed jump arcs also add to this, as you can instantly tell you timed your jump wrong and have to watch helplessly as you fall to your death. I don't see it as much as hold over from the 8 bit era as much as deliberate design choices that combine to create a terrifying experience. Even as an adult, seeing the title screen makes me feel anxious and uneasy... that is a pretty powerful effect.

Several years back someone made a KZbin video that began with the player beating the final boss and getting the message that he had to play through again and find the bracelet to win... then the song "You're The Best, Around" song from Karate Kid needle-dropped in and began a superbly edited montage of Arthur's grueling second quest. It was a real treat but it had disappeared from the KZbins entirely the last time I looked for it. A shame!
@Neverhoodian

I know, right? So many of my favorite KZbin videos and channels from the site's early days have been lost over the years, be it from user deletions to algorithms taking them down for things like copyright strikes (the vast majority of which were false). It really is saddening.

It's the U.S. release on a 1-chip Super NES. I don't know why it's not showing the usual slowdown, but I've been told this game does all kinds of weird stuff on a 1-chip, so who knows. I just went back to test the jail cells and ended up seeing severe sprite glitches that didn't show up when I recorded. Mysteries o' life and all that, I guess.
@BlockABoots
@BlockABoots 6 жыл бұрын
I first played it on my PAL SNES and even that version had bad slowdown, so i was bracing myself for when i eventually go the NTSC version but i was not braced enough lol. Apparently its all down to sloppy programming as there's a rom on the internet that changes some 'stuff' in the rom and has no slowdown what so ever

Another commenter speculated in the Final Fight episode that early devs were working in high-level languages (C++ or something like that) due to uncertainty over the console's final specs, and they shifted over to machine code once the proper dev kits shipped. Who knows?
@KuraIthys
@KuraIthys 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, in terms of slowdown, this game has got to be one of the worst I've ever seen, and it can't be the hardware, because it does a lot less than other games that don't have ANY slowdown. It's truly terrible. As usual, you'd expect the PAL version to (in theory) have less slowdown, since, all else being equal the code has 20% more time for each frame to try and sort out whatever mess of poorly optimised code it's running. But... Of course, that only helps if the NTSC version was a LITTLE bit over. (like, 5%, 15% maybe at most - that's still enough to slow the game to half speed). But if it's way over, like 70% more than what fits in a single frame's time, then that advantage doesn't help at all of course...

8:16 - Arthur could never double-jump in the arcade or Genesis version of Ghouls n Ghosts. This is a new skill, not a "carryover".
@Fattydeposit
@Fattydeposit 6 жыл бұрын
It's a replacement ability for the loss of up and downwards attacks. Instead of lightning speed multi-directional offensive capabilities Arthur now has trickier platform sections to contend with. Not exactly a the kind of trade I'd personally sanction but at least they shook it up a little.

Oh and the Golden Armor gotten a changed from Ghouls N Ghost where casting spells only gives I frames for the cast which doesn’t work out that well if you try to abuse that you need to be precise with it but in Super you are given 1-2 seconds of I frames after casting on top of the initial frames when you cast Not only that about the shield you can get an upgraded shield (Sun Shield) that reduces cast time and block 2 more hits unlike the Moon Shield which every new gold armor give you one also I think not having a shield also have longer cast times I’m not sure Casting spells meaning charged attacks

Ghouls 'n Ghosts was my favourite game of all time when I was a kid. I even finished it in the arcade using only a couple of credits and camped around my friend's house where his import copy of the Mege Drive port lived. To me it was pretty much the perfect video game. The SNES sequel was harder to master because it wasn't as fun and most of the weapons were handicaps rather than useful. It was also bloated in length and suffered a couple of severe dips in design quality - yet it remains underrated. As the memories of arcade centres continue to fade so will people's ability to understand why these games are so beloved.

You missed a couple things here. For one, the Gold Armor allows you to charge up a powerful magic attack, just like in the previous game on the Genesis which you show footage of happening, not sure how you missed that. Also, Arthur's double jump isn't "carried over" from anywhere, it's unique to Super Ghouls. I'm really not sure how you came up with the whole "points collected enables armor drops" because that's not even close to how it works. Basically, what appears in the chest depends on 1. What armor Arthur is wearing when you open it, and 2. What number that chest spawn is. Chest spawns are always triggered by Arthur standing or jumping at a certain location, there's basically an invisible hitbox that needs to collide with Arthur in order to spawn a chest. Chests will ALWAYS spawn in the same spots every single time, so once you know where one is, you should be able to consistently spawn it every time you retry that level. As for armor upgrades, if you're wearing steel armor, Bronze(green) armor will be in chest number 2, 4, and 6. If you have Bronze, gold armor will be in chest number 3 and 5. And if you have Gold, an upgraded shield that lets you charge magic faster and absorbs more projectiles will be in chests 4 and 6. If you lose your armor at any point, the steel armor can be recovered from chests 4 and 6. The "number" of the chest depends entirely on you spawning them, so if you miss the first chest spawn and spawn the second one instead, that second one is now chest #1. Knowing about the chest order helps a LOT in this game, because then you can learn where the chests are so that you can consistently upgrade to gold armor, or recover your steel armor should you get hit. You can even lose your armor and still get gold with the blue shield, but this is only possible on level 5 and 6 because they're so short and all the chests are close together. You would spawn all the chests without opening them, lose your armor, open chest 4 to get steel, go back and open chest 2 for bronze, then chest 3 for gold, and then chest 6 for blue shield. This can really save you on level 6 because on the second loop of the game, you need the gold armor to get the special weapon in the first place, AND the weapon is much more powerful and can destroy projectiles if you have the gold armor.

Love the Megadrive port of Ghouls and Ghost and the Nes original, i grew up with these games never played the Gargoyle Quest games until year later, but i love them too...Sigh, its a shame Capcom dont make these games anymore and dont have no love for them. There's enough exploit in the game on the player side as there are on the game side, and if you learn those tricks, the playing field is -almost- level. The singular place where Jeremy can't be challenged on this one is the randomness. In fact, cranking the game to professional mostly only influences enemies and obstacles that have random patterns by making them even more random. So yeah, the games true edge, and true unfairness, is that, without a doubt, you WILL encounter some deaths that you actually can't do anything about.

I still think the DARK Souls comparison holds Up. Both Games are about learning the Patterns necessary for each Situation through Trial and Error, basically playing more Like a Puzzle Game than a straight Up Action Game and it's your Job to figure Out the solution for each Puzzle. And while DS Puzzle is based on the Combat, G&G Puzzle is based around how you navigate through each screen.
@JeremyParish
@JeremyParish 6 жыл бұрын
Strongly disagree. Dark Souls is about giving you the tools and experience you need to respond to new situations organically. Once you understand the workings of the game and get a sense of what enemies can do, you can enter a new scenario and come out alive. That's impossible in Super GnG, which from start to finish relies on untelegraphed hazards to force you to memorize by trial-and-error the way through each screen.
@cinnamonnoir2487
@cinnamonnoir2487 6 жыл бұрын
Another point. Dark Souls isn't a _punishing_ experience, particularly Dark Souls 2. The game gives you ample healing options, some defensive/evasive options, and lots of room to escape enemies with. The mere fact that it's in 3D makes it considerably easier to escape enemy attacks in Dark Souls. All the "Ghosts 'N Goblins" games, by contrast, give you a tiny amount of space to work with. At any given time somewhere between a quarter and two-thirds of the screen will be occupied by enemies, deadly traps, or parts of the floor that you can't walk on. They're also _platforming_ games, so in addition to dodging enemies you also have to keep jumping around with the jankiest jump imaginable. On average, games that feature exploration tend to be much easier, mechanically speaking, than strictly linear platformers. Dark Souls is tough, but forgiving. Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts is just sadistic.

I always feel like I'm tripping when I see people mention how brutal this game is. I generally do not like ridiculously hard games and I find al ot of NES games to be unfair (most Mega Man games, for example) but I find Super Ghouls and Ghosts to be fairly tame and doable. I first played it on the Wii's VC (which didn't have save states outside of letting you resume where you were when you turn off the console, so it was still as hard as the original release) and while I died a ton, it rarely felt all that cheap and I actually think the game got a lot easier in some of the later levels. I dunno, I honestly have way more trouble playing the first DKC game and I think _that_ game is cheap and poorly designed (DKC2 is an incredible step up, tho!) so I suppose I'll just always be the odd one out for this topic.

We'll just have to disagree, then because I found CV4 to be pretty much the least fun Castlevania that I've played. And to be fair, I haven't played Vampire Killer or Haunted Castle which I have heard are quite terrible.

Lifelong Castlevania fan reporting that Haunted Castle is a miserable slog with one of the silliest walk cycles in videogame history. I'm at a bit of a loss as to how Suoer Castlevania IV could ever be considered a graphical downgrade considering just how richly detailed it is from start to finish. (and seconding the love for its soundtrack)

The color palette is bad, imo. Lots of greens and browns on grey and reds and browns highlighted with blue which clash, not to mention the brightly neon colors of simon's being contrasted with the greyish-green of his armor. There's a lot of gradients being used to fill space on the larger sprites and background tiles instead of actually using the larger number of pixels compared to the NES and the greater number of colors to create more detail. Rondo of Blood and Bloodlines both do a much better job. Also a game that does a better job with it's color palette and detailing? Super Ghouls & Ghosts. Also in the graphics part, everything is way too large. Simon is gigantic and takes up a much larger portion of the screen compared to other CV games, or even to Arthur here in Super Ghouls & Ghosts. I know you, Jason Garett, specifically were asking about how it was a graphical downgrade, but here's some gameplay considerations as well. For one, IV is really, really easy. The 8-way whip allows you to hit so much on the screen and travels a fair distance. Again that is specifically an issue because of how big the sprites are. Simon can hit a large area of the screen at will freely around him, meaning that positioning is a lot less important than other games, and due to the level and hazard design, nothing really challenges Simon on his quest.

Castlevania is like Dark Souls. G&G is just unfair.

Hmmh. The way you're describing it, this game is designed almost the same way as 'I wanna be the guy' which is notoriously unfair, sadistic, cruel, and can really only be defeated by rote memorisation of where all the traps are and what they do.

I don't particularly like any of the G&G series, but if I had to pick one, I guess I'd pick the Genesis one just because the ability to fire in multiple directions makes the game feel more approachable to me, even though I know it's a murderer's row. The SNES game is obviously a prettier game, but the double jump almost becomes a negative because of the emphasis on really precise platforming. This is something Castlevania did right - while platforming exists in that game, it's largely de-emphasized. And hey, speaking of Darius, I feel that's one of the better SNES shooters that's not named Axelay, Space Megaforce or R-Type III.

This is the only game so far I feel like you missed the point of Jeremy. It's a puzzle platformer. Dying if you don't know the secrets is an absolute cornerstone of the genre. ilu man, but this is not your best work. Usually you're more able to examine the game in context than this.

A save would completely defeat the purpose of the game. If you want to play Mario World, play Mario World.

Just finally after all these years sunk some time into this on the Switch SNES library. Man this game is a real downgrade. Not only does it have as you pointed out cheap deaths, the cheapest in the series to date, but weapons that can be detrimental far more than in the other games. A double jump was cool but with no air control it would often lead to taking a hit. I see what they were trying to do with the weapons, make some weapons unpowered up better than others and then mix up the value of the various armor charge attacks. So Liuke the homing crossbow is great, its charge attack is the worst. (I think it uncovers hidden chests) I beat it twice with generous use of rewind and it was really a chore. While the atmosphere and graphics are nice. Ghouls and Ghosts is such a better game and earlier to boot. I was hoping to find after all these years a joy in finally playing the SNES entry in the series., was a little let down.

I loved Ghost N Goblins & Ghouls N Ghosts but I always hated this game. Even when the game is not suffering from constant slowdown its still SLOWWW and boring. The when you get to the part where you fight the devil (boss from Ghost N Goblins) this game gets downright cheesy and unfair.

After getting bored to death with the last few episodes that cover "Final Fantasy II", I'm really glad to see an episode covering a GOOD game, even if "Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts" is rather infamous for being ridiculously hard, but at least it's a game that is actually fun to play.
