I remember seeing that ending bug while playing the game as a child. I was slow to adopt the "y = attack, b = jump" SNES controller conventions so I would use the NES style controls option in this game like NME used in this run. Didn't get used to the default style until Contra 3 and its lack of custom control options forced me too.

Regarding the 'ghouls' in the game: George Romero, godfather of the zombie film genre, said that he never saw his creations as "zombies". Rather he said they were "ghouls", as zombies were a different thing entirely (people put under a spell or curse by a Voodoo witchdoctor). Therefore, the title "Ghouls and Ghosts" is actually fitting.

I only watch speedruns of games I've beat myself cuz I don't want spoilers and prefer to have context on how difficult the tricks are compared to casual runs. I just beat this game (the first loop, haven't gotten to true final boss yet) so I can finally check the speed run out. I beat it on an emulator, using save states at checkpoints because I just can not stand learning how to beat the entire game all in one go (it is very trial and error based). Man it must take a lot of patience to learn the ropes of this game on og hardware. I don't think I even have the energy for a gaming session that long.

You know its funny... with the Switch online "Save State" feature, this game isn't really long at all... even when compared to other SNES games of its era. Even a scrub gamer like me finished it in like 1 hour and 40 mins using the "Save state" feature. Its that brutal, arcade style difficulty that sends you to the beginning of the stage that gives this game its notoriety. I still see it as the original dark souls lol. Great run. Also, learned from the AVGN the mantra that everyone who plays this needs to know - "GET THE KNIFE" (yeah its a dagger, but that chant got stuck in my brain lol)
