I strongly disagree that the camera is "dated". The camera has to be fixed for it to work as a multiplayer game and it also encourages you to keep moving forward which reinforces the game's linear level design. The example used in the video review is a speed level where the camera is designed to punish you if you're going through the level slowly.

The camera doesn't need to be completely rigid though. Allowing the player to players to push/tilt the camera even slightly would greatly improve players' sense of depth, due to the parallaxing effect.

The odd thing about the camera and perspective options is that the levels were built with the camera in mind. So if the camera was free, the levels wouldn't be the way they are. PLUS, I've seen plenty of people have zero problem with judging distance and perspective. I'm in the same boat as Damiani, and I have the same problem with the Crash Bandicoot games for some reason. I can almost never tell where I am in relation to other things when I'm in the air. Since it's a person to person thing though, I don't know how I feel about it being listed as a negative.

There is definitely levels where the perspective feels a bit off, generally it's not too bad but it feels like there should have been a few more environmental pieces to give more depth on those specific stages.

Without Miiverse, the Switch feels like a more isolated console. Miiverse was a ton of fun... until Nintendo got stupid and punished Miiverse users for not talking about games enough by redesigning the entire thing... then ultimately scrapping it. I never understood their draconian mood change. They made a social network... a SOCIAL NETWORK... that people USED... and they punished users for doing more on it than just discussing games?! Newsflash Big N: There's more to life, and people, than just video games. Don't call your service a social network and then get agitated when people socialize. 3D World is my favorite Mario game - and the camera is one of the reasons why. I *like* the fact that you don't have to think about the camera. You could beat that entire game and not move the camera once (or think about it at all, really). It's very much a 3D game with 2D sensibilities and focus, and I adore that. The entire overhead of controlling the camera WHILE running around (something a lot of people have an issue with) is completely removed -- and I think that's great. But, different strokes for different folks. Damiani clearly prefers the more open running-around games like 64 and Odyssey (which I like less and find less focused/interesting). Great to see his take on it.

I think its because the level of openess in levels can lead to interesting and creative gameplay design and mechanics. Galaxy Is the perfect example of a game which is linear in nature but the level design and mechanics makes the game feel open and explorable. 3D World is a much more straightforward in its level design. Its not a bad thing, but IMO the mechanics and level design feel like a step back compared to Galaxy, going from A to B to a flagpole lacks some of that excitement of exploration that the other 3D Mario's do so well. I think that's why Bowsers Fury excels because it opens up the level design of 3D World more that offers much more variety and creativity in how the Mechanics and power ups are used. And scratches that itch of exploration.

Level design and mechanics can be just as interesting and creative if not more in a controlled environment. You're missing the point entirely if you think the level design is a step back. It's just a side step, a different design intention. It leads to tighter mechanics and more challenging platforming especially during the bonus levels. What's funny is there is still plenty to explore in those levels. It's just a different way to explore than an open environment. Overall, they each have their pros and cons and it's as simple as that. I wouldn't want all Mario games to be any one thing.

I *strongly* disagree about the camera. There's never a moment where it feels like you can't see enough to make a good judgement, especially not in singleplayer, and there were never any moments like that in 2014 either. 2:12 is a lousy example of "what can go wrong". It's an autoscroller. Of course you can't move the camera. The point is to keep up with the camera, not the other way around. You didn't complain when Crash 4 didn't let you move the camera, why now? Calling it "dated" is just strange. It's not like this is Mario 64. It's not like we all collectively decided autoscrolling was bad. Despite the closing comments and the rating, this review came off weirdly negative. It feels like Damiani was just looking for a reason to complain, since he so strongly prefers open-ended Mario design anyway.

Me and my partner played through Bowser's Fury in co-op. While I agree that if you want to do the platforming, it's not a great experience, but we still had a lot of fun. Bowser Jnr is clearly meant to be played by a Parent as their Child plays Mario as Bowser Jnr is ludicrously overpowered. He can't collect shines. But he can't die. He can attack enemies and bosses. He can collect Shards. He can fly anywhere. He can interact with objects. He has a huge range, larger than most levels. We ended up having a great time treating Bowser Jnr like a tool to be wielded. It became a race between me and my partner. Who could get to that Shard first, who could deal with the platforming enemies faster. It's not 3D World co-op, but there's still plenty of fun to be had if you make it.

i don't understand the camera complaint, but also don't understand saying that Bowser's Fury somehow is more free to explore than Odyssey? Also on the note of the islands all evolving to have a new cat shine to get, the mention of them all being "unique" is kind of odd as well. They all have a blue coin shine, and a key/cage shine. That's 2 out of 5 so there's only room for 3 others to be actually-unique. I'm enjoying the game a lot so far, i'm not trying to say it's bad, but this review felt really strange imo. You guys are usually really consistent with reviews but this sounds like it was written by someone entirely different.

They all have a Shine for beating the level for the first time. And then the last 2 are Blue Coins, Challenge Run, Complete the level after it's remixed, etc.

Lots of people have problems with the camera. Which makes perfect sense. Its a 3D platform info game with fixed camera angles.... not ideal. And Bowsers Fury is more free to explore because there are no separate levels, or loading times.

hopefully Bowser's Fury can get a standalone release at some point. being packed in with 3d world is fine and all, but it's such a brilliant game on its own. if they had just released it separately as well at like 20 or 30 dollars, to get all the people who already played 3d world and dont want to spend 60 dollars just for it alone. it deserves to be played by everyone. I had so much fun with that little game, pure joy.

I personally give 3D World a 10 and Bowser's Fury a 6. Same result I guess... 3D World to me is what I want out of 3D Mario, tight obstacle platforming with zero filler, while Bowser's Fury just takes some of the worst parts of Odyssey (level design, mundane objectives) and marries it with 3D World's limited moveset that was NOT designed for the "open world" levels. It just makes me want to boot up Odyssey to enjoy that game's amazing movement.

Are people not seeing Super Mario 3D World as a 3D version of the old 2D games? Because that is what it seems to be. As opposed to Super Mario 64 which was trying to be its own totally new type of Mario game, this is trying to specifically be a 3D version of the old 2D type games. It’s a “start at one end and get to the other end to win” kind of Mario game, just like the old 2D games. I’m just saying that it feels weird to only compare it to other 3D Mario games and not compare it to the old 2D games.

Bowser's Fury is too short but god DAMN is it cool to play an open world Mario concept. I hope they take this approach with a future game. I don't even mind sort of a hybrid between BF and Odyssey, just make the individual maps/worlds larger. Imagine a 3D Mario game where every world was about the size of a tower-revealed section of Breath of the Wild (obviously not the whole Hyrule map, that's insane. But I also wouldn't sneeze at it.)

Hi there, I've been playing this game with a friend online like mad men. We haven't played the Wii U Version so it is all fresh content for us. We don't continue if we haven't finished a lvl 100% (stamp, 3stars, gold flagpole). In your review, you say that the host controls the camera. That is not true. Or is it? I see that you were playing as a larger group. In a 2 player scenario, either player can "take the spotlight" and force the camera on themselves. At least from our understanding. I would so far agree on you final score. My gripe is that when playing online, the save file isn't shared. Basically my save file is in world 1 while we have together created a perfect savefile on my friends switch haha. Haven't played bowsers fury yet, but looking forward to it. Overall I had an insane amount of fun from the basegame in online 2player coop.

Scoring an enhanced/deluxe port is always tricky because you never really know if it targets first-time players (like myself) or those who already played it years ago (and if worth a re-buy). If memory serves, 3D gaming is really difficult at that age, even if you get to play together, and this isn't the easiest in that category either. Maybe playing as Bowser Jr in Bowser's Fury would be fun for them though. From my experience, once you give them a controller they want to be the main character, but not all children are the same.

Bowser's Fury looked pretty cool based on the trailers. But all that effort for a small DLC to a 7-year-old game. The game is alright, especially if you missed it on the Wii U but... this idea feels like it could have been a whole sequel or something. I've seen people getting mad at lukewarm reviews (like from the ever-trusted and revered IGN that could do no wrong) but it's like. Dude. They're charging full-price for a 7-year old game with a small DLC to try and justify it. If they're charging new-game prices then it deserves to be criticized as if it's new. And it didn't age like wine. 8/10 is being NICE if you ask me, that's what I would've given the original release.

I know people desperately want this to be seen as this "underappreciated" game, but there's definitely a reason why this game didn't entice anybody to buy a Wii U back in its day. It may be a "much better version" of Super Mario 3D Land, but the same team that brought us Odyssey and the Galaxy games can do a lot better than this; it's wasted talent.
