The soundtrack for 3d world is criminally underrated imo. So many good songs, from Super Bell Hear, Mario 64 Slide remix, Ghost House Theme, Champions Road has a remix of Gusty Garden, World Bowser, The Credits Roll and many more. Easily one of my favorite soundtracks in gaming.

The 3D land/world games should honestly just become the third type of Mario platformer along with 2D and open world. I really enjoyed 3D land and world and wouldn't want to see it's gameplay style completely disappear. I think it would be best served as a side series alongside open world Mario, just not the focus.

Funny you mention this, because it kinda reminds me of the different styles of Sonic games. 2D, Adventure, Boost, and Lost World, though Sonic Team experiment entirely too much with all of these styles. Lost World's style is pretty much the black sheep of the styles and I would like if they improved on it, but it probably won't happen.

I think it's more so that it's not the Mario game people want. Each Nintendo platform has it's signature Mario game. You have the original SMB for the SNES, World for the SNES, 64 of course for the N64, Sunshine for the GCN and Galaxy for the Wii. This just didn't feel like it had the scope and ambition to be THE new Mario game for Nintendo's brand new console. I think if they released something like Oddesey for the Wii U and then released this later on instead of NSMB U people would have looked at it far more favorably. However because it was the big new Mario game for the new platform it was meant to fill a role it simply wasn't meant for. It just doesn't have the scope, originality or sense of wonder that 64, Sunshine and Galaxy had. I also think it's the reason people look down on NSMB U and 2 so much. With 3D land and 3D world effectively serving the same function as simply fun Mario games they are pretty much redundant.

I think it's because people saw a potential 3d mario game like 64, sunshine, and galaxy, but then what they got was a rehashed version of 3d land. Everything that was still new still felt way too much like something that would be in 3d land, unlike the big three with completely different movement styles and new areas to look around in. It felt like the same extremely linear playstyle of 3d land with a fresh coat of paint on it. Like if you just scaled down the graphics of 3d world and removed the icons from both games, even I could barely tell which came from which outside of iconic stages. Edit: I'm not saying 3d world or 3d land are bad games, but if you played 3d land before, then 3d world isn't going to be as enjoyable.

@@AlexanderScott66 On top of that, this was made in an era where we were getting a barrage of new Mario games every few months that seriously lacked any real identity beyond one single gimmick that made them technically different than the previous iteration (in 3D World's case it was the multiplayer) when what fans wanted was something fresh and innovative. With the release of the Switch version, people are starting to see more positives in 3D World now that we're in a post-Odyssey landscape showing that this wasn't going to be the future of 3D Mario moving forward.

I don’t think people hated “Super Mario 3D World”. However, it gave people an empty feeling or vibe for the game, as it was the only 3D Mario title that was made for the Wii U. Like Nitro said, N64’s defining 3D Mario moment was of course “Super Mario 64”. An open world sandbox 3D Mario game that introduced players to new stages in the form of portraits, new villains along with bosses with new abilities and enhanced graphics for its defining console. This game got to see new light on the Nintendo DS as a port with completely new features and playable characters. GCN had “Super Mario Sunshine”. The follow up to SM64, in the 3D Mario series. This game introduced players to a new hub world called “Delfino Plaza”. A new island with stages in the form of paintings or sometimes doors. The Wii had “Super Mario Galaxy” 1 & 2. A 3D Mario game with a more linear environment but in the style of a sandbox/open world Mario game. This game showed players how to use motion controls and guide Mario through these motion controls and showed players a different reality with our favorite plumber turned platform legend in space. Then comes “Super Mario 3D World” for the Wii U. Another linear 3D Mario game that succeeds the previous game titled “Super Mario 3D Land” on the 3DS, with that being its only big defining quality. There’s not really much here besides the use of the Gamepad and the Cat Suit. It’s a good game. Sure. But it’s one of those games you only remember to research history of gaming.

What gave “Super Mario 3D World” a second chance to truly be remembered was the Nintendo Switch’s defining 3D Mario moment known as “Super Mario Odyssey”. “Super Mario Odyssey”’s open world environment and lack of a multiplayer mode with linear environments made people truly look back at 3D World and appreciate its beauty. It’s not 64, Sunshine, Galaxy or even Odyssey, but it’s a fun game to play. And that’s okay. Hence we got a Switch port last year, along with a new side game. “Bowser’s Fury”.

The Cat Suit honestly might be my favorite powerup in the Mario series. It's so freaking fun to use. I would also like the Mega Mushroom a LOT more in this game if they brought back the meter from New Super Mario Bros.. The more things you destroyed, the more 1-Ups you got and that was honestly REALLY satisfying. The later Mario games where the Mega Mushroom appears remove the meter, and it just takes away most of the fun to me. Also the camera in this game didn't bother me, what did slightly bother me however is that since this kind of level structure is designed for the 3DS, depth perception could be hard at times since the Wii U doesn't have stereoscopic 3D. But it was only a problem in some levels for me. Also, I TOTALLY agree about this game having an amazing soundtrack! Definitely one of my favorites in the Mario series. I also TOTALLY agree that jazz fits Mario ultra well.

The replay value for this game is just... wow. I completed all the levels with Mario and Luigi but never got around to the other three. Still, with the amazing levels and music 3D World has a charm all on it's own. Great review!

I mean, I heard a lot of people wishing for another collect-a-thon like Super Mario Sunshine, but the word I've been hearing was that the game itself was really fun, though there were definitely some reoccurring complaints in regards to the recycling of bosses.

Chris Chen I never heard the complaints about the bosses. The bosses were only recycled for the boss rush and for the lead up to Bowser. It's the same in the Galaxy games and Odyssey.

Regardless of what people say about 3D World, I do have to give it credit where cresit is due... A "GROUND POUND JUMP", (WHERE NOT ONLY CAN MARIO HIMSELF JUMP AND USE HIS BIG ASS TO POUND THE GROUND, BUT HE CAN ALSO JUMP SO AMAZINGLY HIGH) IS LITERALLY A THING!!!!! Welp, in Odyssey, it is. We would say that Super Mario Odyssey is the only Mario game where he had that move himself, but it could also be coded into other Mario games. Like Super Mario 64 (which no matter what people say about it, we all have to admit it has a very satisfying soundtrack. Like Yoshi Player!), and (a hack of) Super Mario Maker 2 (aka Kaizo Mario Maker 2)

I absoluely love this game. This felt like a great progression of the classic-style Mario games, even beating out SMB3 (which I felt the Galaxy games could never beat). A ton of power-ups, multiple playable characters (favorite is Toad because of his quick and precise platforming), fun levels, and pure platforming bliss. I felt that the explorable world maps were a step up as well, and was looking forward to them being more fleshed out in the "inevitable" 3D World 2. Then I found out how much the game was hated. I was kinda surprised, but understand now -- it was a great progression of classic-style Mario, but not of 3D Mario. That said, my Top 3 Mario games are now Odyssey, followed by 3D World, followed by SMB3. So much for being my new favorite. =P

Honestly I think 3D World is just as good as any other main line 3D Mario game. People try to right it off or say it doesn’t fit with the other games, but it’s a clear obvious experimentation on the design direction since Galaxy. I’m glad it exists. I loved the simple charm of 3D Land and I like how 3D World fleshed it out into a full entry in the series. It deserves to be spoken about as apart of them.

Hey, neat! Sweet to see 3d world get some attention. Honestly i at the same time get and don't get all the (quite honestly excessive) hate for 3d land. I get on the sense that its really not what people expected and/or wanted for a console mario title, and really sacrifices a lot of the single player stuff in favor of multiplayer, like you said various times in the video. I had the pleasure of being able to play through it with my brother, and my cousin and his sister. 4 player multiplayer is certainly the most fun way to play (maybe not the most optimal if you just want to get through the game with ease), it does get hectic but in a good way, we got plenty of fun moments of all us 4 tryng to scramble around and trampoline eachother to get a green star or to survive the crazier obstacles later on. The mirror/challenge houses were almost the pinnacle of craziness, if it weren't for the final, FINAL challenge, it was a real blast . And all the complaints about the endgame stuff melt away if you are playing with 4 people, since you have 4 sets of hands looking after stars and stamps, automatically get the level complete for all 4 characters (if you really want the COMPLETELY OPTIONAL sparky icon thingy), and like you mentioned, you can do crazy stunts to reach the top of the flagpole (aside from getting 4 powerup store slots, so unless you are crap at managing that, you'll easily be able to save at least one bell for the end). Honestly its at the same time understandable, and a shame that it gets so much hate (sorry for the gigantic wall of text).

My favorite 3D Mario, no question. It's literally a classic structued Mario game I always loved back in the NES and SNES era in 3D. Don't get me wrong, I think the 64/Sunshine/Odyssey formula is cool and well executed (and the best on Odyssey), but definetly when comes to a traditional Mario experience, 3D World fulfill all I need. Unlike 64/sunshine/odyssey, collecting a bunch of stars, sunshine sprites, moons in the same *WORLD.* and then I felt like there’s nothing I could do after collecting everything, that’s why I don’t like collectible exploring 3D Mario games.

Second favourite Mario game (SMW is my top). I think one's love for this game comes down to how you played it. I played it with my son--the first game we played through and through. It was easy enough for him to get something out of it, the levels were scaled well enough for it not to get boring or too difficult, the levels were quick to pick up and play, the music was fantastic... and well, it's one of my most cherished memories. When my kids tried making their own KZbin channel, this was the first game they tried playing. My family got SO much out of it. I'm sure as a single player experience the game is lacking, but of the six times it was played through in my house, not once did the person play alone. Also, this is my first comment on one of your videos. Honestly, I like your content (only watched this and your 3D land video, but I'm looking forward to watching the rest of your Mario series).

Coming from someone who hated 3D Land for just how lifeless, nostalgia pandering & boring I thought the game was, I found 3D World to be a pretty fun game overall. It actually fixes a couple of issues I had with 3D Land. Better soundtrack, a few new cool & interesting ideas, toned down the Mario 3 nostalgia pandering a bit, better world map & having MUCH better level designs. It's not one of my favorite Mario games though, 3D World still felt pretty soulless to me, as in the game is nowhere near as atmospheric nor adventurous as 64, Sunshine, the Galaxy games & Odyssey, & 3D World for the most part still plays it pretty safe with the game basically being 3D Land on a console with multiplayer but overall, I did find myself liking the game. It's not the 3D Mario game I wanted, hell I don't think it's the 3D Mario game people asked for considering the hate its gotten back at E3 2013, but I'm glad to say that I had a good time with the game overall.

I already really liked this game, but there was something about the small tweaks to the Switch version that made me absolutely adore it! The faster pace, midair roll, and the changes to the Cat Suit (you can now lunge farther and climb higher) combined with a game I already liked just made me love it a lot more I think the reason the levels can be forgettable is because a lot of them share similar aesthetics and there are a lot more of them. compare this to galaxy, where every level looks unique from each other and there aren't as many individual stages, but rather multiple objectives in each stage. I love Super Mario 3D World. It's not my absolute favorite or anything, but it's such a blast and just blastin through levels with that BANGER soundtrack just puts a smile on my face :)

Considering I've played the switch release exhaustively, I still consider this my favorite mario game, entirely because the levels are so clearly constructed in an elegant and polished three step manner. I absolutely get why it wont connect with others, but the game is absolute mechanical perfection

I've never felt that the reason for the 3D Land gameplay style being evolved for the next home console entry was not done for the sake of the mulitplayer. I personally feel it was done because of the Wii U's lackluster performance and audience perception, they felt, building off formulas for 3DS games that sold like hot cakes = instant success. After all, money talks. There's also the potential perspective that it was done because they simply wanted to make a game more accessible and approachable on the console that people didn't even know how to approach out of confusion. 3D World to me is still in my top 3 3D Platformer experiences because of its game design and its sad that I don't see a lot of people really approaching it from all kinds of different angles like this, maybe its just me.

Personally, I really really loved Super Mario 3D World. I love the level design, the creative gimmicks it offered, and the fact that you can play as Luigi, Toad, Peach, and (later in the game) Rosalina who play similarly to Mario, but have their own special abilities to make them a little distinguishable during gameplay. I kept jamming to the soundtracks, the graphics are gorgeous, and Cat Suit is probably my favorite of the traditional power ups. The only thing I dislike about it is that the extra worlds are just copy/pasted levels of previous worlds, and it did feel a little on the safe side, but I had a good time with it. It’s what 3D Land should’ve been, which was such a boring and uninteresting experience for me. Oh and I know I might get some hate for this, but I like 3D World way more than 64 and Sunshine. Go on and bite me.

I feel as though with this review, compared to the other Mario reviews, the rhetoric used here doesn't reflect the viewpoint held very well at all. At the beginning and end of the video the tone is carried with disdain, and time is spent saying how 3D World is a "black sheep" but the bulk of the review was incredibly positive and in favor of the game. The only parts that got quite critical was regarding the camera (which is a valid criticism), the art style (technically subjective but still completely valid), the use of touch pad (a personal preference of controller being the source of the criticism), and some criticism towards the function of multiplayer, which even then is given a level of understanding. Within this review alone, the level design is praised, the music is praised, the function of multiplayer is (mostly) praised, the return of old Mario enemies is praised, the control is praised, the power-ups are praised, the handling of endgame content is praised...and yet this is the one that is the black sheep?

I just recently got Captain Toad Treasure Tracker and it's pretty neat with how they expanded upon the Captain Toad levels in 3D World. If you have save data from 3D World on your Wii U you can unlock levels from that game in Treasure Tracker and they're changed up to accommodate Captain Toad since he can't jump. I think it's also a prequel to 3D World cause it shows him going into the pipe at the beginning of 3D World.

It's sounds like Super Mario 3D World is one of those multiplayer games where your enjoyment of the multiplayer is heavily influenced by how cooperative you and your friends are. If you and your friends are well-coordinated, flexible, and good communicators, it'll be fun, but if you and/or your friends are uncooperative dickheads, it'll be hell.

I have been playing this game again with my girlfriend and I forgot how much I really love this game. Its simplicity makes it approachable and playing the game in 2 player is the perfect mix of cooperative and competitive.

You did such a good job with explaining the strengths and weaknesses of this one. I recently had someone describe this game as "broken." I kid you not! I said to him/her, "Pictures or it didn't happen." They kept insisting they found game-breaking glitches on multiple occasions, and I asked them to show me footage since, you know, it's a mainstream game. Someone would've found these glitches if it was truly broken. They blocked me. Also, Holy sh*t! I had no idea you could get inside a Koopa shell in this one.

All I want is for this terrific 3D Mario game to get a switch port so I can play the four player co-op with friends again. The 2010's gave us SUPER MARIO GALAXY 2, SUPER MARIO 3D WORLD and SUPER MARIO ODYSSEY. 3 incredible games, and honestly 3D world was my favorite of those 3. Galaxy 2 was great but it also didn't wow me the way that the original Galaxy game did. Odyssey was a fantastic return to the design of 64 and sunshine but it's also been hard to come back to. 3D world I always found to be a joy to return to because of the tight design and I find the collectibles to be more fun and rewarding to achieve. Slap in a really fun co op mode that I spent countless hours playing with others, and yeah it's probably my favorite 3D Mario game
