That Nintendo gun I had during the Gold Eye 007 craze back when I was 12 years old we (my friends and I) ran around my back yard pretending to shoot each other with toy guns. The Nintendo gun was one we used but there were other toy guns. My grandmother had such an objection to it even though none of the guns looked real. Those were good times back when I was creative.

FUN FACT: On the Super Famicom (japanese snes) version of super mario world, the cartridge actually says super mario bros. 4 in english!

This is pretty late but with Ryu, Ree-you is closer. In actuality it is pronounced with some sounds that don't exist in English. The R is actually a hard R that sound like a soft D. The easiest way I could explain it is say the pokemon Mew's name, and try to replace the M with a D. That will get you really close to the correct pronunciation. Gaiden is Guy-Den. Japanese only has 5 vowel sounds, A (Father), I (Mean), U (Rude), E (Red), O ('Ro'tor). Meaning the ai in Gai, is a combination of the A ('Fa'ther) and I (M'ea'n) which produces the I sound you hear in words like spice. Den is like the word dent, just without the t. Japanese phonetic structure is extremely simple when compared to English, it's actually our English phonetic structure that complicates our understanding of how Japanese words are pronounced.

Brian Colborn Well, I have lived in Japan for 10 years. My wife is Japanese. My friends and coworkers are Japanese. I speak Japanese with everyone, everyday. I know what ryu sounds like, and i'll bet your karate master does too. If I had to speculate, Id say he just tells you and other english speakers to pronounce it "roo" and be done with it because he is sick of explaining a phoneme that isn't present in the English language. I've seen other Japanese people do this (both using "roo" and "Du"). Especially those who have lived in America for a long time. It's just easier and they don't really care if you pronounce it correctly or not. As a social experiment though, ask your master to pronounce the following Japanese words as he would pronounce them to another native Japanese: "hiru" (ひる　昼　means afternoon. actually sounds like roo) and "hiryu" (ひりゅう　火龍　mean fire breathing dragon. sounds different from roo, rhymes with mew). Pronounced back to back should be easy to hear the difference, if he is willing to do it for you. Anyway, give it a shot if you are interested in learning about another language.

It's not complicated. One of the many bootleg NES game companies copied the Famicom Mario 2 game to a cart, edited a few tiles, and then called it Mario 4. This is so they could make money off of the game for unsuspecting buyers--pretty much like every other bootleg.

What happens when you reset an NES is that it doesn't actually reset the registers. This is why good NES programmers will initialize the registers and the stack prior to initial configuration. The only reason for the reset behavior is that these aren't being reset properly and thus are jumping to incorrect parts of the ROM. In English: The NES hits some bad code and it causes the processor to lock up.

I'll be dollars to donuts that if you opened up that cartridge there would be a famicom SMB 2 board in there with a famicom->NES adapter. MANY early games had these, and the easiest way to find them is to find a 'heavier' copy of games like Excitebike or many other black-label carts.

Rewatching this three months later and I found my old comment. To elaborate, I believe the Y is supposed to be said quickly when speaking the Japanese name Ryu, so quickly that it almost passes by your ear. The reason for the lack of emphasis on pronouncing the Y is because the U bears the most emphasis. So, really, it sounds more like "ree-OO" than "REE-oo," which can be misheard as simply "ROO." Also, though this is nitpicking, the R is spoken very lightly, so that it's almost a D sound; this seems to be common when speaking Japanese words and names.

Why don't AVGN mock a bad PC title? I mean squeezing in PC in the AVGN theme song wouldn't be hard and there are plenty of bad EGA and early VGA titles. The "Super Mario Bros / Tetris / Nintendo World Cup" triple-game cart at 0:55 is extremely common in the UK. On the cart label, it says "NES-ZZ-UKV." There's probably a reason you "haven't played it." Without modification or special adapters, most USA NES consoles can't play a game from other regions. The CIC lockout chip prevents most USA NES consoles from playing UK games (exception: the top-loader didn't have a lockout chip). Defeating the lockout chip is easy (cut a specific leg on the lockout chip in your NES). Still, US and UK NES systems had different clock speeds and different video standards (NTSC/PAL), so the gameplay speed will be different if it works at all. Usually, that just means games run as fast as the USA version always did. In regions with the PAL video standard, gamers were accustomed to under-clocked systems and slower (easier) games.

The movie got the 'Mario as a last name' thing from the title of the games, Super Mario Bros. One would assume that either: 1. Mario is egotistical and wont let his brother share the spotlight, hence the games being called Super Mario Bros. or 2. Their last name is Mario. I mean, when people saw me and my brother, they didn't say 'there goes the Timothy brothers' or 'there goes the Johnathan brothers', they said 'there goes the Wheeler brothers', usually while we're tping someone's house but that's besides the point.

In theory, The cartridge was made that way on purpose. Think about it...there never was a Super Mario Bros. 4 game. And in order to avoid confusion, or future chronological confusion, which was going to happen anyway, the game maker(s) threw every bit of confusion into this game to save everyone the efforts. Super Mario's world was released in 1991, and its sequels came out at some point after. So, in order to end its own lineage, the original Mario Bros. on the NES took a biiig shit on itself...on purpose.
