Super Mario 64 16 Star Speedrun in

You're right that you do! I think at some point I forgot about the punch, but I've also been trying to get the hang of the drift for left side. I'll make sure that I'm doing the punch next time I'm practicing though, that could be causing some of the inconsistency that I've been having with the strat. Thanks for the tip!

Been watching Mario 64 runs for years but never did speed running with it myself (though I am somewhat accomplished in a couple FPS games for speedrunning so I do get the mentality). Only experience I have is playing it casually growing up. How long did it take you playing this as a speed runner to get to this time? I'm moving for a new job and know I will have time outside of work in a small town with not much to do at first and was looking to fill some of the time with a new challenge.

I've been playing for about 3 weeks now, so it didn't take too long. I've speedran Super Mario Sunshine, so I do have a bit of experience with 3D Marios already, but you can learn a lot from using what you learn from watching the runs. If you find yourself really unable to move at the start of running the game, you can alter the 16 star route a bit to avoid doing stars like Dark World red coins; in the long term though, I think it did help my movement a lot. There are tons of resources out there, and if you have time to kill, you'll have lots of time to practice and improve your times. 16 Star is short and sweet, so it's something that you can end up doing a run in between other things and not have to worry about losing your day. Go for it!

@@silver_cck Thanks for the details. Yeah, the category that ended up branching into a bunch of half self-created categories recently was the bioshock worlds of hurt DLC. Not that there's really any active competition for it so it's not saying too much, but I did get a WR for that by a mile. But those runs can last from 6-40 minutes depending on the category so it's prone to many resets. I'm much more used to really long, grind style runs from my Halo experience. Had way more experience in score categories than speed, but the idea would translate to Mario hopefully easily enough. Just have to practice new movement on a controller I haven't used in over a decade. ha. What's the setup to record? Idk how to record an N64.

​@@GamblingDolphin ​@Gambling Dolphin I use a hyperkin HDMI converter for my N64, which runs into my pc capture card. So far, that seems to work alright for me. I know some runners use Retrotinks, but I had a bad experience with the product personally (though I used it for gamecube, so maybe it might be different for an N64 game). There's always emulation as well as wii/wii vc virtual console. And 3D all-stars ofc, but up to you which version you're looking to run
