Even though it's called Super Mario 64 DS I consider Yoshi to be the main protagonist of this game. If it weren't for him Bowser would have won.

Technically it would be Lakitu, as he woke Yoshi up and told him everyone else is missing. But yeah, Yoshi did most of the work after that. I just realized that we are playing as 2 characters: 1 being Lakitu since we’re controlling the camera and he’s the cameraman, and 2 being the hero (Yoshi, Mario, Luigi, Wario.)

Yoshi is technically the real hero in this game as all the other characters was locked in the walls by the devil monsters roaming causing caoes of the castle he had to unlock them all.

I love how they included Wario as a good guy in this game. He is usually not on the good side in the main games, but this game here shows he isn't always a total jerk and that he has a little bit of heart too.

Wario has almost always been a friendly rival to Mario and is still often used as one in the party/sport type games. He was really only a bad guy in Super Mario Land 2, maybe Wario Land 1 aswell

apparently in the game’s manual luigi and wario are “party-crashers” so i like to think of it like wario convinced luigi to troll mario but mario ended up being chill with it so they just decided to tag along to whatever mario was doing.

Fun Fact: If you don't rescue Wario, he is completely absent from the ending. I would assume the same is true for Luigi, but I'm not exactly a pro gamer, so It'd be hard for me to find out.

You can skip Luigi as well Mario is absolutely required otherwise the game crashes, but the ending sequence only has Yoshi and Mario

I a sense this game is like Luigi Mansion just because his friends are in painting and same in this game, you fight monsters or bad people and also there are bosses, and stars and gems to collect.
