It existed in the Mario Bros. Super Show, which is fairly contemporaneous with this game. That's what people are likely referencing when they use that voice (either intentionally or via cultural osmosis).

64 is a classic game, but it’s not one I’m massively into. I like the lineal atmosphere and the mystery of its content, but I’m not good with the controls and the camera’s a bit wonky. I have the 3D All Stars version, but I didn’t really get very far; I did better with the DS version.
