The only thing that comes close is the feeling of absolute immersive freedom that came with GTA 3 in 2001. But Mario 64 edges it out.

Maybe Mario VR will be the next big thing. Idk, one can only hope. The way we play games hasn't changed that much since the jump from 2D to 3D gaming. Game worlds have gotten larger, more interactive and more detailed since, but it's the same concept since the mid 90's.

Recently, my 60+ year old mum decided to start playing games as she thought it would keep her brain active. Between the controls, exploration and charming tone of Mario 64, I honestly couldn't think of a more perfect game for those purposes, and she's now addicted. I also suggested Mario Kart, but that was out of pure mischief ...

3 words = The System Seller! I will forever be nostalgic for this game. My best friend saved all of his pocket money (we were 15) to get the N64 at launch, and we played the hell out of Mario 64. Together we completed the game with all stars, and I will always fondly remember those days. Great video, your point about what would have happened to the N64 if this game did was not at the launch is a scary one. I believe that the N64 would have been DOA without Mario 64.

Seeing mario in 3D was HUGE, hearing the StarFox team talk to each other constantly, blew my mind! It was like playing a movie! Ocarina of time was the 1st game where I felt genuinely scared and alone in a massive world. Goldeneye's music had me obsessed. Seeing Sonic in 3d, talking with an amazing soundtrack, on the SEGA DreamCast system my next big WOW moment! Then I got older and leas impressed with things :(

This is one of the reviews I've been looking the most forward to. Mario 64 is one of my favorite video games. I didn't get to play it until I was in high school and even then the Xbox 360 and such was out, but even with the modern games at that time Mario 64 managed to keep my attention far longer and I played the game like crazy. It made me feel like I did when I played Donkey Kong 64 years before and couldn't put the game down. I love this game and I consider it one of the N64's best.

I left school in 94 and by the end of 95 had sold my megadrive and snes as I was then getting a car and going out at weekends and had grown out of 'kiddy' games systems! Then fast forward to 98 and I called round to my nanna's one day to find my cousin there with his new N64 hooked up and playing mario 64. It was unbelievable seeing and playing it for the first time and remembering how I used to love super mario world on the snes. 'What the hell's that' I said when I first saw the controller - but when you first played it it felt perfect! I had to get an N64 and super mario 64 and it is still one of my favorite systems today! My next purchases were - Mario kart 64, lylatwars, waverace and then I stumbled across a game that my cousin had forgot to take home one time and had left it at our Nannas - zelda orcarina of time - still quite possibly my favourite game of all time!

It has to be one of the first times I was ever blown away by a game. Brothers friend has imported a 64 from Japan in the summer of 96 and being intrigued by the controls and environments. Flash forward a couple of months later and got one Christmas 96 with Mario 64. I really couldn’t describe to you how amazing it was. I remember one night playing for hours and it only felt like 2 hours! Exploring the whole castles and finding all its secrets took quite a bit of time but felt very rewarding. For something attempted for the first time it had such a tight design. Last time a game had that kind of fun and excitement for me was believe it or not Mario Odyssey. But the thing that was most amazing about playing this game in 96 was it showed that this was what games were gonna be like in 3D. I still remember how amazed everyone was with the graphics cause everything was smooth and not pixilated like Saturn and PlayStation.

I had still be playing my NES while most my friends had already been playing SNES and would play that with them when I would be at their house. I was remember begging my parents for the N64 as a Christmas gift. I ended up getting a SNES that year which honestly was an amazing gift and one of my favorite consoles, but dreams of 3D mario adventures made me wish I could play it. I finally got one the year after and once I picked up the controller, my jaw hit the floor. I was so blown away at everything i was seeing. I played it every chance, exploring every level, and loving every moment. I have such treasured memories of playing this game. Truly a great game.

Well...with all the fun I've had with the 64 over the yrs I still have to acknowledge that it was sadly a product of Nintendo's naivety and sheer arrogance (or stupidity to be quite frank), thinking that their hardware would be just as successful as the Nes/Snes w/o prime 3rd party support from Square, Capcom, Konami, Natsumi etc. Designing a machine with flawed hardware, against the earnest wishes of developers using carts alongside nonsensical ram connections causing processing bottlenecks (lower frame rates for ex in games). (check Ben Hecks teardown vid) The N64, as fun as the console absolutely is, set the stage for Sony to take their place, and dominate even further with the Ps2. The thing is, this was totally preventable, it's pretty inarguable that if Nintendo through the 64 didn't destroy 3rd party relations, then the GameCube would have fared much better than it did commercially, and history certainly would have played out differently in N's favor. Imagine FFVII, MGS, MMX4, Symphony otN etc, all on the 64 alongside M64, GE, Ocarina of Time etc? Then it could be more so considered a legit successor to the amazing Snes. This "failure"...for Nintendo to properly succeed or at least equate their proceeding machines software library and the forfeiture of their industry leadership to Sony that damaged them tremendously in console space for years is why the 64 is not *as* appreciated amongst the retro community imho based on my experience and research. (Regardless, still a very fun and influential console, F-ZX is my favorite game)

🦬 I'm the best philosopher that's ever existed in the history of everything ever, ever. Check this out. Strangers walk down the street in the city, sometimes saying "hi" or "hello" to the other person in sight. One will boil pasta and when they drop the noodles into the water, for ONLY A MILLISECOND they will think of how they never will know the strangers they said "hi" to as they passed them by. Furthermore, they'd rather have the pasta noodles hurry TF up and get soft and chewy - than to have a lame cliché friendship with whoever those random fuqs were. Yeah, I know I'm the best, you ain't gotta tell me. Plus, you're in luck. I only charge 285 dollars for an autograph.

This one is on my list of all time favorite games. Nintendo's 1st true 3D platformer got everything right from the start that it set the standard for others in the genre. It's probably the 1st game where you actually experience freedom in gaming. I'm currently trying to beat every North American N64 game (296) and this one is the 1st one I beat. The order I'm going is doing all the 1996 games in chronological order of release date; giving the viewers the experience of what it was like getting the system at launch.

I never owned any Nintendo (or Sega, or Sony) consoles. I went from the Atari 2600 to the Commodore 64, to the Amiga, to Windows 98, so Mario wasn't as huge to me. I knew the character and I'd played Super Mario Brothers, which I didn't like, but I didn't have any special attachment to the games. I'd also never played any Playstation games at that point, so my experience with 3D games was limited to things like flight simulators or slow puzzle solving games like Driller. The idea that action games could have fully 3D maps that you could explore in real time was a completely new concept to me. The first time I saw Super Mario 64 was on a store demo unit. I only got to play with it for a few minutes and I don't even remember what area of the game it was, other than it was outside. I only saw a small area and I had trouble wrapping my head around the idea that not only was the entire map 3D, but the whole thing fit on a cartridge. In my mind, cartridge systems were pretty limited. The PS1 might be able to pull it off, but how could they fit all that into a cartridge? Of course as time went on, I got used to the idea of games being in 3D. I didn't actually PLAY Super Mario 64 until many years later, and that was on an emulator. Maybe some people will say that doesn't count, but I still don't own an N64 and don't know anyone (locally) who does. I don't have the money to buy an actual system and games for it, so emulation is my best option. I haven't played it that much, but I did like it. I like the exploration aspect of it. I haven't figured out some of the mechanics of it yet (like being told to use switches to activate colored blocks, but so far I haven't seen any switches for them), but I plan to play more of it. I got sidetracked by Conker's Bad Fur Day. :)

Great vid Glenn! I was in my first year out of school (first year uni) and had a proper job for the first time and wanted to get a console, and everyone I knew had Play Stations (including my brother), and a guy at the Burger King I worked at continually kept on at me that the N64 (that had just come out) was way better and that all I needed to play was Mario 64 and I would be sold. In New Zealand there is no official Nintendo presence (Nintendo Australia administers us) so there was no marketing effort, no advertising or anything. After a couple of weeks of my workmate going on about it and not knowing anything about it I went into an electronics shop to see if I could spot one, and they had it on a big screen at the front of the shop with a looped attract demo of Hoth on Shadows of the Empire. I watched the demo for about 15 minutes and being a SW fan-boy from way back was utterly speechless, and on the spot bought Mario 64, SoTE and the console. My girlfriend at the time starting playing it, so we kept it at her house quite a bit, and she ended up beating Mario before me, and I ended up having to ask her help on how to get the wing cap :D

This is the greatest video game of all time. My opinion couldn’t possibly change. That giant jump in technology from playing 2d Sonic to roaming freely as Mario in a 3D world with no time limits or restrictions. The near silence of the castle grounds with a few birds whistling to that initial experience of the secret slide within the mysterious stained glass window. That magical feeling will remain with me forever.

Oh man...where to start..this was my first game on the system i was obsessed with it even be4 getting it tho thx to a friend that happened to have it months before i get it and all the magazines talking about it. It felt magical a whole world i could warp myself into and forget about everything else this game was unlike anything i had witnessed 'till then, the music, sounds, colours, variety and diversity of lvl themes, size and depth of lvls, feeling of exploration and adventure it offered was UNMATCHED i feel thankful for having this as part of my childhood-early teens and the nostalgia it creates never rly seems to go away even today as im watching this video i can feel the emotions i had when playing this as a kid. Its true that the psx won the battle of this generation of consoles but Nintendo games were all about quality and this is obvious as N64 is the numero uno nostalgia console in this generation of systems. SM64 simply dwarfed every other platform at the time and made it look like a caricature SM64=BEST/UNFORGETTABLE.- ps: Banjo-kazooie is with it up there but it feels like its poor relative you all know what i mean still xcellent games both of em.

Still the best Hub world in 3D platform games. The castle feels eerie and mysterious with plenty of secrets and imaginative bits like the mirror room, the small/big island room with the crazy size shifting and best of all, the endless stairs. The best part of the game was this castle for me.

For me there has never been a game before or since that really made me feel like I was playing something truly new and never seen before. It gave me a feeling that this was something from the future that was shocking it was actually around at that time. Everything since has been interative and nothing has given that feeling and I'm not sure there will ever be such a leap in game design and technology ever again. Hope I'm wrong about that though.

I have abit of an odd memory of first playing super Mario 64. After school I made plans and I stayed over the night at a friend's house and his mom made us spaghetti for dinner while I played his copy of this game. It was almost surreal. I was watching him play the first secret slide. The one where you jump in through with the stained glass princess peach windows. I couldn't help but compare my spaghetti dinner his mother made to the color of the secret slide lol. Just a strange memory of my first exspirence of this game.

This game holds a special place in my heart. My childhood friend passed away last year, and this game was HIS game on the N64. I would go over to his house every morning before we would hop on our bikes and head off to school, and he would show me how far he had progressed the night before. I was always shocked because he seemed to be so good at the game. I either didn't have the game, or couldn't seem to make any progress on it, but he ended up beating it! It was some random morning and I came inside and he had a huge grin on his face, he had beaten Mario 64. Miss ya bud.

I got this game along with my N64 and Pokémon Stadium for my 10th birthday. I always grew up around video games and I remember going to bed after my birthday party and hearing my parents downstairs playing this game and just being in awe of the difference between it and SMB3, which they had absolutely mastered. I sucked at SM64 because I was so young at the time but I remember getting the DS port for my 13th birthday. I made it through the whole game until the final Bowser fight. I lost to him at least a dozen times. I literally dreamed about a strategy for beating him one night and I woke up the next morning, implemented that strategy, and finally beat the fucking game.

Great review Glenn. Back when this launched the hype was insane! Seeing the GamesMaster episode where Dave Perry lost it. Seeing Bad Influence cover it. Watching THAT N64 magazine VHS over and over... And when I first started the game up and held the controller. It was pure kiddie cocaine. I’d adored my SNES and Mario games but this was mind blowing. It was like playing Pixar before Pixar was a thing. It was put together like a Swiss watch, proving Nintendo were still masters of their craft. It was a tough time to be a Nintendo fan in the late 90’s when the PS1 dominated people’s psyche. But this world. On a cartridge. On a CRT... It was worth every minute of the wait and I still play it to this day. Mechanically joyous, toy-like and with so much humour, variety and fun; there will never be another Mario64 moment and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Glenn, I have three things to say to you. 1.- I just realized that you are still doing N64 reviews, but the title of the videos made me think that you were reviewing like HD non official remakes of the games. Now I knowthat the titles referred to the quality of your videos. I don't know if it's just confusing to me. 2.- Thank you for continuing your N64 reviews. Your videos made me want to expand my N64 collection, and your reviews help me very much in doing that. There are so many N64 games that I never played, but I kept reading about them in magazines and tv shows from that time. Your videos are now the main source of information for me to purchase more of these games. 3.- Hope for the day that you review Castlevania 64. Thank you. Greetings from Mexico.

So many good memories as a kid. The music, sound effects, gameplay, and controls were fantastic. Hearing “It’sa me, Mario!” never gets old, even today. Over 20 years later Mario 64 is still being cherished and modded by a strong hacking community that have such gems like Super Luigi 64, Mario 64 Chaos Edition, and Mario 64 Multiplayer. Anyway, my first experience with the N64 was at a video rental shop. I was in Pittsburgh, PA visiting my cousins and we went to the rental shop to get a few SNES games as we usually did. They had a Japanese N64 there with SMB64 all in Japanese hooked up and available to play. you had to put coins in it and could only play for a minute, but it just blew my mind. I didnt read any gaming magazines at the time, so I hadnt seen any screen shots and i didnt know what to expect with the graphics. when I saw them my jaw dropped.

Mario 64 is the most replayable game of all time. I only first played the game in 2015, but have now 100% completed it around 20 consecutive times (and the DS version about 6 times). It's one of those rare games that gets better each time you play it. My first playthrough was pretty frustrating and left me underwhelmed, but it has since become my second favourite game of all time (after Ocarina of Time). There are just so many ways to approach the game, thanks to Mario's versatile moveset and the non-linearity of each star. It's also incredibly fun to speedrun the game. If you look past the dodgy camera, dated visuals and occasionally finicky controls, you will find one of the most enjoyable games in gaming history. Thank God Nintendo is finally bringing back the old formula with Mario Odyssey...
