Doki doki panic was what had her as a male, which was brought over in the manuals description of her for the nes Mario 2, even though later on it has clearly not become canon.

Super Mario Advance is such an underrated gem. Most people love the GBA remakes of Mario World and Yoshis Island but this one is in my opinion the best of the GBA remakes because it adds so much content which the original didn't have like the voice acting, the collectibles and even a brand new boss.
