I think that "keep power-up when hit" mechanic is extremely interesting. One of my biggest gripes with 2D Mario is how there's only so much you can do with the bosses, and I find myself wishing for fights designed around the use of a specific power-up. I really hope they take advantage of this system to do exactly that and design battles around the unique abilities power-ups give you, that would be so sick. "They don't talk like Mario characters with mandated gameplay-relevant dialogue, they talk like the writers actually care" is also a really eloquent sentence for describing how Rainbow Stars's story differs to mainline Mario. Loving all the Paper Mario influence I'm seeing there. One last thing, I really like how a lot of Yoshi elements are used (like the question cloud and cloud drop enemy). The designs for the new enemies are top-notch too, those totem-thwomps and coral pokeys are seriously rad.

This wasn't made in Unity, it was made with the SMBX2.0 engine so not everything was built from the ground up (Mario's controls, basic objects and enemies, and controller support are basegame). Otherwise, excellent review!

This game is built off Super Mario Bros. X, which is pretty wild with how far that's come that things like this are made from it now. This is a crazy several steps up from the SMBX games I played several years ago.

Funny to think that one of my first and to this day favorite Mario games is still Super Mario 63. Before I had a DS my only means of playing games was with Flash. Even after Nintendo's official experiences showed me just how amazing their games were especially the ones that came before my time nowadays I genuinely have lost interest with whatever they're doing officially. It was probably since the Wii U when I started to feel like most of their newer titles tend to rely too much on nostalgia and they feel more like watered down versions of their older titles. I mean when some of the best games on the Switch are Remakes, Remasters and Wii U ports I started to get the feeling that they've kind of lost their ways. It's like Disney. They've been relying on redoing the same things over and over again that when they do decide to make something new it's not even good anymore. This isn't to say that there would be something wrong with liking the games Nintendo still makes. These are merely my thoughts on the matter and you don't have to agree with them. But when the best Mario based RPG titles are only remakes of already existing titles with their new original titles being just bland such as the new Mario & Luigi title or Origami King. You have to wonder if their new titles are selling because they're good games or because people are still buying them "because it's Nintendo." Which is why nowadays I'm more into fan games and games inspired by their works rather than their official offerings. Again we haven't had a new Wario Land since the Wii. And as funny as it's going to sound we have Pizza Tower and Antonblast. When Nintendo doesn't know how to make an actually good Paper Mario game we have Bug Fables. I don't think I even need to get started on the Metroid inspired games but to give a good example. AM2R. Again a game that is more unique and fun than the official remake Nintendo made on the 3DS. Games like Tunic can give the Zelda formula a run for it's money. But with fan games like Rainbow Stars. It just shows that the fans are way ahead in term of the creative game. Nintendo's only reasoning for why they stopped making 2D Mario games after they made 4 New Soup games was that "They couldn't come up with anything new and worthwhile." Only to then follow it up with SMB Wonder after they saw what the fans were doing in Mario Maker. And then they admit that "There's still more you could do with 2D Mario." Super Mario 63 a game that combined the best mechanics from the 3D titles into a 2D one came out all the way back in 2008. And prolific programmers and developers like Kaze show that even with old ancient tech you can still create wonderfully beautiful and unique experiences. (Return to Yoshi's Island my beloved)

I actually think the level design was pretty bad. It was like 75% wall jumping or hitting stuff with your star pal. I'm not sure I ever needed to jump on enemies.

To be fair they’re trying to expand on the established mechanics so they might’ve been focusing on showcasing that more, but I’d imagine by the time it’s complete they’ll rework/balance out level design to have the established stuff compliment the new things they’re implementing
