fun fact, that extra section after the first part repeats twice, was actually meant for the first games ending theme. It was cut late in development though cause they needed to free up a tiny bit more space on the cartridge. So for all intensive purposes, this is the official full theme. No key change though at the end was meant for the original though, for obvious reasons.

They had wanted to put a song like this in the _original_ Super Mario Bros, but they weren't able to do so since they only had a few bytes left after adding the Goomba. But, with the sequel, they had enough space to do so.

Didn’t they have more space because the Famicom had the disk system? I’m pretty sure SMB2 JP was developed for the famicom disk system thus adding more space and new sounds. Like the one you hear here.

The FDS was made because cartridges were expensive and didn't easily hold save data (which was more expensive), so they needed to use a cheaper system that had more storage. While they were at it they thought, "Hey, if we're making this a whole new piece of hardware, why not make it even better?" so they made it also give extra RAM and a 6th wavetable sound channel.

@@H128 The original SMB nearly didn't have the Goomba as an enemy, it was a rather late addition after it was thought that having the first enemy being the Koopa seemed a bit too difficult. Since they only had 41 kilobytes to work with for the _whole_ game, getting one more enemy in required some sacrifices, so the Goomba has only one sprite that gets flipped so it looks like 2 animation frames.

The reason this is the only new song in this OST is because this is how Koji Kondo (the composer for SMB1/2/3, SMW and SMM2) originally envisioned this song when he was making the soundtrack for Super Mario Bros.
