A playthrough of Nintendo's 1990 platformer for the NES, Super Mario Bros. 3.
The video shows the entire game without the use of warp zones.
Super Mario Bros. 3 was released to a level of hype and anticipation never before seen for a video game, and anyone that set foot in America in late 1989/early 1990 would have found it impossible to avoid encountering Mario in one form or another. Mario 2 was still recent and mega popular, and the dude's mug adorned every conceivable bit of sponsored merchandise under the sun. You could eat Nintendo cereal from a Mario bowl in your Mario jammies on Saturday morning as you watched the Mario TV show, and during commercials, you'd see commercials for The Wizard, the new Fred Savage/Christian Slater/Beau Bridges movie that was to be the ultimate marketing vehicle to introduce... you guessed it! Super Mario Bros. 3!
It was an incredible cultural phenomenon. Mario commanded more recognition and respect than Mickey, Bart, Ariel... pretty much any icon of the time. Well, maybe with the exception of Batman. Batman was probably a fairly close tie.
The marketing campaign had an absurd amount of cash backing it, and it worked. Everyone knew Mario, and every kid either had an NES or was more than likely willing to go to unspeakable lengths to get one. But the hype train can only get you so far, and more than one game has suffocated under the weight of its own hype.
But then again, this is Mario. And somehow, Mario 3 actually surpassed everybody's expectations. It won pretty much ever award ever, it was sold out everywhere for several months after it was released, and it even tended to be exempt from the scorn of "that kid" on the playground who liked to hate on what everyone else liked. It was a master work, and everyone damn well knew it.
It wasn't just that it was an amazing show of how impossibly far Nintendo had pushed the already then ancient hardware - it was (and that's despite the game being nearly eighteen months old when it was released in the US!) - but the gameplay was revolutionary. About as much so as Super Mario Bros. was when it became the de facto standard for action games a few years earlier.
There are 90 stages (!) crammed into the game's 384K rom, split across eight themed worlds overflowing with secrets to uncover. Mario also has a load of new awesome power-ups: you can now fly as a raccoon, swim as a frog, become an invulnerable statue of an apparently castrated tanuki, or... wear a turtle shell as a mallet-wielding mountaineer? Huh? It's all awesome, but it does occasionally make you question the sanity of the creators.
It's wide open to play however you like, too. If you want to make a mad, underequipped dash for Bowser's front lines, just find a few warp whistles and head to World 8! If you prefer to take your time exploring, there is no end to things you'll find with an even minimal bit of effort - coin caches, ghost mushroom houses, secret blocks that allow access to new areas of a level - there's a lot of replayability here. It's too bad they didn't bother including a battery for game saves, but really, that's the only legit criticism I can level at Super Mario Bros. 3.
The controls are still the gold standard for platformers, and that difficulty curve is great. Everyone can finish World 1, but clearing Worlds 6 and 7 without warping is still worthy of whatever the real life equivalent of a PSN trophy might be. I still vividly remember the sheer rage I felt as a kid trying to beat 7-7, and 6-5 wasn't far behind it. The game becomes really difficult toward the end, but it was always fair. And sometimes infuriating. But as many of us I'm sure have proven over the years, it just takes practice. However much.
And finally, what a memorable sense of personality this game has! Everything, from the intro to the enemy animations to the sampled bongos and steel drums, is vibrant and eminently likable. Did anyone else ever pick up on the different ways the game plays up the idea of a "stage"? The intro curtain, the platforms bolted to the backdrops, or the "fade to black" at the end of each area?
The attention to detail was unprecedented, especially given the scope of the game. It might be hard to imagine if you haven't played it, but even with so much crammed in, nothing here is fiiller.
What else is there to say? If you credit Super Mario Bros. with saving video games, then it only seems right that Super Mario Bros. 3 be recognized as the game that would show the way toward the future of gaming. Nintendo has done a lot of miraculous things over the years, but to manage both of those achievements within a single console generation is a feat among feats.
Here's to Mario on his 35th birthday. Well done, bro.

Super Mario Bros. 3 is simply the best video game I’ve ever played on any video game system or arcade machine. It's still playable today as it was in the 90's. I have this on my Nintendo NES, I played the Super Mario All-Stars version on the Super NES years ago, as well as the Game Boy Advance port in the 2000's.

To finding all the whistle s warps, to getting through that pipe level on world 7 which was a pure pain in the ass, 😂 to a nice sweet ending. This game is a landmark for me and it hold up. Yep, I paid to see the 1989 movie The Wizard to get hyped for this. I also remember how shocked I was when I first experienced Giant World, with the massive Koopas and Goombas. A good friend of mine who lived across the street happened to come over while I was playing that world the first time, and he thought the entire game was like that with massive enemies. When you consider this game came out in 1988 in Japan, it really is amazing what they were able to do with the Famicom back then.

Prior to its private consumer North American release, gameplay footage from Super Mario Bros. 3 appeared in the Universal Studios film The Wizard, which helped fuel the game's anticipation among fans. Nintendo of America unleashed their $25 million advertised their campaign. Commercials aired on TV. There were cross-promotions with other companies, including Popsicle and Nabisco. Two books were based on the game, Super Mario Bros. 3: Happy Birthday, Princess Toadstool and Super Mario Bros. 3: The Secret Bridge, were published by Golden as part of their Golden Look-Look Books collection. Six months after the game's release, McDonald's released a set of Happy Meal toys. NBC aired a Saturday morning cartoon, The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3. was created from September to December 1990 by DIC Entertainment. Despite being based on the game, the show has a different plot. The show aired weekly with 26 episodes and featured numerous characters, enemies, and settings from the video game; the original seven Koopalings are given different names based on their given personalities and are also given a new age order. In the cartoons, King Koopa and his Koopalings attempt to take over both the real world and the Mushroom Kingdom. In 1991, A coloring book was published by Golden.

i can remember it like it was yesterday. christmas time...1987. my older brother and i got 2 shared gifts under the tree. of course, he is older so he gets to open the bigger one and i got the smaller one. it was a nintendo entertainment system that came with super mario brothers, duck hunt, a controller and the duck hunt gun and then the legend of zelda. we both screamed and cried. we had a big foyer in our home that barely had any heat but it had a tv in it. my dad set up the nes in there and we played for days. fast forward to 1990 and we saved up all our money to buy super mario 3 (i cant remember why we never got super mario 2.) my dad took us to toys r us and back then for video games, there was a giant wall with pictures of all the games, underneath each game was a clear envelope that had a ticket for the game. you grab a ticket and bring it to the register and pay for the game...super mario bros 3. ticket. pay. get game. go home and play. big brother plays first of course. we would stay up all night taking turns but i could watch my brother play this game for an eternity. i miss those days. sorry for the long post, but watching this hit me right in the feels.

It has everything that makes a terrific game: excellent soundtrack, superb graphics, great characters, awesome controls, cool storyline, and so on! Despite of its age, it remains a timeless classic for people of all ages. So much potential contained on such a small ROM size (384 kilobytes)! A truly masterpiece that provides joy and entertainment for all folks. No wonder it's widely regarded as one of the best videogames in History!

It's even better when you still have the console, and SMB3 and Kirby for it. Those 2 games right there were at the top echelon of NES greatness, but there's a lot of greatness just below those too (Konami's output, like Bucky O'Hare for an example).

I'd say greatest NES game of all time, but Kirby's Adventure exists, and pretty much matches up with this game, and surpasses it in some ways I feel. One of the best ways to kill Bowser in this game, reach him with the Hammer Bros. Suit and chuck a few hammers at him. He'll go down quickly, like a pile of rocks.

i remember playing this on my game boy advance (it’s the same game just different format) when i was a kid (like 6 years old) and having him play it for me to beat the “hard” levels. now im 24 and can complete the entire game all by myself.

It's many years since last time I played it but I think it's still the best of the older games. Taking the differences in hardware into account, I consider it better than SMW too. Lots of variety and great music - I recall the All-Stars version music not being as good.

That's the way Nintendo *_should_* be counting Mario's years. Why they don't count the Arcade *_Donkey Kong_* game is way beyond me.

Probably due to the fact that in Donkey Kong, Mario wasn't named Mario yet. He was just "jumpman."

I'm in the minority that prefers Mario 3 to Super Mario World. SMW may have tighter controls, but Mario 3 is more challenging and it has more variety; more power-ups, more stage themes (generic as they may be), and even more interactively on the world maps. There's enemies to fight and Toad Houses to enter.

It's quite odd how this game gets revealed in a certain movie clip when it was about to be localized. The title screen is a lot better with music in it's 16-bit counterpart and you can't go wrong with how much power ups there are in SMB3. Happy 35th Anniversary to Super Mario.

I just realized this is a left bros copy. The left bros (version 1) has grass land, desert hill, ocean side, big island, the Sky, iced land, pipe maze, and castle of koopa. I really don’t know why they changed it to be land.

I play this on an nes emulator jnes, and I can't do the Goomba 1ups because I can't control my descent with the racoon tail. Is this on the original nes, or are you using an emulator?

I heard that SMB 3 does not have a save feature at all, no passwords or backup batteries. If you played the original cartridge, you had to restart ALL OVER every time you switched the NES off. Is it true?

Notice how Peach/Toadstool blinks and moves her mouth in her letters to Mario? Weird how that wasn't retained in the All Stars version, though she is colored in properly.
