It's slower because you'll have to go all the way around the back of the boat instead of just staying on top and getting in the pipe ASAP

In World 8's "Ship" level, you can go swimming under the boats without diying. Doesn't make you win time but no need to jump and dodge enemies. A friend of mines found that trick accidently.

Totally true, and how I play it all the time😄 But having to wait for the ship to be low enough to jump up, or just having to double back even a little to the pipe would add a bit of time to the run. Speedrunners will risk death if it means saving a tenth of a second. They're crazy, I tell you.

You can make some speed swimming for change a bit in the level 8-2 with the boats, I always pass under them, after with the automatic scrolling you'll dont gonna make a faster clunk.
