Honestly Lou and Danny's voices for Mario and Luigi I think are the most authentic for the characters given that they are Italian plumbers from Brooklyn,being that they are Brooklyn natives and have lived there all of their lives but have Italian ethnicity. They would speak plain Ameican English and with a Brooklyn accent with some Italian dialect,if that's the right way to put it and that is how the actors here made them sound,as well as on The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. Charles Martinet,while his voice for Mario is a good one in it's own right,voices them as if they were Italian natives.

Would seem to be the case. I’m sure they only had a set budget to work with producing this though. So they may not have been able to afford him.

@@inspiredfigmentsarchives Good point. Though given the "Super Show" ish art direction and the fact that they got the Super Show actors for this one, I'm surprised this wasn't adapted into a Super Show cartoon. Or did this book and tape come out before Super Show?

@@supermariof0521 Yeah, that’s what I’d heard aswell. Very interesting. Always loved John Stocker’s voice work. My personal fave of his is Newton Gimmick in the Teddy Ruxpin TV series. But his Toad was quite charming too.

Had this storybook forever (got it from the book fair at elementary school), but never knew it had its own BOOK&TAPE version (also love they used illustrations styled like the original game cover art and used most of the SMB SUPER SHOW cast, except the voice of Koopa for whatever reason)

I, too, never realized there was a version with an audiocassette. My copy came from a friend in elementary school. He was a big Mario fan and I borrowed it for what was supposed to be a few days, but begged him to let me keep it. After saying no a few times, he reluctantly complied, and I feel a bit of remorse about the whole ordeal (I've held onto the book to this day, but it's been around 25 years since I've seen my friend). He also had an official VHS of an episode of the Super Mario Bros.: Super Show, which I made a copy of. Most of the VAs being the same as in Super Show makes sense, as the book (and presumably this Read-Along version), was released the same year as the show's original airing (1989). It's strange that they couldn't get Harvey Atkin to reprise his role as King Koopa. He was one of only two VAs to stay on for all three DIC Mario cartoon series. The other was John Stocker; who played Toad and Oogtar.

This book is how I knew Mario and Luigi are plumbers and were from Brooklyn. I thought that both were common Mario knowledge but apparently a lot of people didn’t know either.

Oh man. Not only do I still have this one as well as the Legend of Zelda one, but it's awesome to know that Lou and Danny did their voices here. It makes it so much more enjoyable and it would have blown kids minds back then, no doubt.
