I think this was something 2D Mario DESPERATELY needed. A lot of the 2D Mario games in the 2000’s and 2010’s are way too similar, but this is different and unique while still managing to offer FANTASTIC gameplay. Easily one of the best 2D platformers :)

The “bonus levels” don’t. You can tell which levels are considered a bonus level because they have yellow text above the name. There are 5 types of Bonus Levels: Break Time!: Quickie levels with gimmicks that wouldn’t work in a full fledged stage KO Arena!: Pit against 3-4 rooms of enemies, you start by stocking up on powerups and going wild. Depending on how fast you cleared the challenge, you’re awarded with 1-3 Flower Coins. Badge Challenge: You’re given a specific badge to clear the course in, which awards you the badge for clearing Search Party: Find five Wonder Tokens around the stage. The game encourages you to use the Online features if you’re having trouble. Wiggler Race: Beat Wiggler in a race.
