It’s an insanely rare occasion of a giant franchise making a concerted effort to de-flanderize their character designs. And for the most part, it absolutely works. This entire game is teeming with personality and moves in a way that is reminiscent of the old Mario & Luigi games, just charming and cheeky and vibrant, while bridging the gap between the classic Mario key art and Mario’s modern design. I don’t think we’ll fully appreciate the effect of this game on its franchise’s brand identity for months or even years-they’ve done such a bangup job with the visual style!

Nobody ever "hated" the New Super Mario Bros. games, but they were very clearly seen as "lesser" games compared to the 3D Marios like Super Mario Galaxy. One set of games had more thought put into its presentation and overall game design, the other was very just keeping the lights on at Nintendo. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first 2D sidescroller that actually had the same attention to detail as the 3D series… actually, even more so. The game spent a much longer time in development than any 3D Mario released up to this point, and it shows. That's why people are shitting all over New Super Mario Bros.… because compared to Wonder, New Super Mario Bros. looks so basic, primitive, and lifeless. tl;dr: People never hated New Super Mario Bros., but compared to the 3D games, they were always seen as the B or C-tier Mario games.

These animations look pretty cool because Mario is being watching classic cartoons and anime for his movements and facial expressions.

NSMB animations were made with a technical purpose, while SMBW animations are made with an artistic purpose.

Man look at those nsmbu backgrounds and compare them to Wonder. People who say Wonder looks like NSMBU definitely need their eyes checked lol.

The smooth, stylized expression captures all of the classic whimsical wonder that is Mario! One thing I notice--Mario's right leg, when he's jumping and it is straight, look a little short in comparison to the left. It's only for a portion of the jump--does anyone else agree? Also, there's an interesting plastic-like quality to the characters when they are in a dark background (@ 1:25). I'm just crazy haha it's a beautiful game!

I dont get how people are saying that NSMBUD's animations look bad. From my understanding the whole point of the NSMB games was that it was supposed to mimic the the original 4 (technically 5 since im including lost levels) mario games but in 2.5d. For what its worth it did a great job replicating that. I will agree that after Wii they did decide to play it a little too safe and didn't try anything new, but since they're all in the "NSMB" category they wanted to keep the the style consistent. Which is why i think Wonder is so different because they wanted to expand upon those games and make some new altogether rather than just a "NSMB3". What's great about Wonder is that its not trying to establish its self in that 2.5D world, its trying to EXPAND upon what its predecessors already accomplished and i think thats what makes this game so magical and beautiful. Wonder is like what sm3 and world was to smb1 and 2.

I think what makes the new animations greater is that you can see Mario's facial expressions based on whatever he does because he's almost always facing the camera. Mario Bros U Deluxe had mario facing sideways so he doesn't move with as much emotion.

Those new animations look so clean, they’re definitely a upgrade. Not that the old animations were particularly bad but there is just so much detail put into the new ones, take for example that running animation where Mario’s legs turn into blur and the new animations for picking up Power-ups

One thing I liked about the jump animation and noticed immediately, is that it looks *exactly* like Mario is depicted jumping in his first games. (Think, Mario Bros. 2 "USA" version)
