The Mario franchise is typically known to be like Mario himself: Happy-go-lucky and ready to jump into the next challenge. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that everything in the series is all Shine Sprites and Rainbow Roads.
Mario still has his fair share of dark moments. Death is still a big part of the series and, while it is often done for some comedic value, it still can get pretty gruesome. The question, then, remains: Which Deaths in the Mario series are the most gruesome of them all?

I wish Antasma was on this list, he would probably be somewhere in the middle, he was a consistent threat to Pi'llo island, being the cause of the Pi'llo folk disappearing, and helped Bowser obtain and power the Dream Stone, something that can grant any wish to the user. He even was fine with ruling alongside Bowser if it meant getting rid of Dreambert. However, after saying something that apparently offended Bowser, he was betrayed, and left behind for Mario Luigi and Dreambert to deal with. After a really good bossfight, he is seen bloating, before he just explodes. He sorta got screwed over, and I sorta hoped to see him on the list.

IKR? He should be here. I know many bosses could go with the "common enemies" as simply exploding in a puff of smoke, falling off the screen, or, in the case of the Dream Team and Paper Jam bosses, a spectacular rainbowfied death that looks pretty and not gruesome. But Antasma's death has that extra bit where he inflates first (before getting a more (visually) dark version of the other bosses' rainbowfied deaths), and that looked kinda painful. Shadow Queen should've been here too, though I imagine she'd be pretty low, and so should Fracktail (not only is he reduced to a skeleton, but he is not evil and you are basically forced to kill him when Dimentio makes him malfunction), and the baby penguin. (I'd say the younger Princess Shroob too but she dies the same as other bosses in that game)

To be honest, I thought that both Tippi(Lady Timpani) & Count Black would get the gold medal for most gruesome death, not only both suffered a lot without each other. But, even their sacrifice was hard to watch without crying. I mean they do live in the place where they can be happy together, as it was shown after the credits. But, the thought of the both of them being officially dead after their sacrifice would be far more tragic than before

One issue with Dimentio's death, while they didn't intend on sacrificing themselves, they *did*, however, decide to use their death to destroy every universe out of spite, so while Dimentio's death by itself isn't gruesome, what Dimentio did because of their death is, by FAR, the most gruesome thing a Mario character has ever done. They tried to commit multiversal omnicide OUT OF SPITE.

Bobby gets the bronze medal in both the Paper Mario Partners list and this one. Coincidence, I think not! Also on this list I now find Yoshi so relatable. There are times when I did nothing wrong and people would make fun of me for their own benefit. You're an evil guy if you're done this. About olivia dying... In chapter 5, olivia was in the unfolding spa and couldn't talk or breathe, and was turned back to unfolded paper making her unfinished without a creator and kamek refolded her. So, kamek is technically olivia's creator so she didn't die. But, thats just a theory. A GAME theory. Thanks for watching.

Tippi and Blumiere or Count Bleck as well as Huey are implied to be alive in some way, shape or form, and Kersti gets wished back to revival in the ending, but Olivia? Oh no, SHE'S JUST DEAD. If knucklotec was on here, he’d probably land in the high middle. Imagine Losing your ring, and then some guy possess your hand and then flies it straight into your face, causing you to explode, then he puts your insides into a machine to power his ship, is really dark. His face is even in horror moments before he dies.

Although regular enemies are low I feel they should be higher if Yoshi was included. These poor minions just get swallowed whole and are probably instantly vaporized or digested without any trace except becoming eggs or leftover koopa troopa shells spit out. Also the Koopalings deaths are more gruesome in the Gameboy Advance version of Super Mario World due to the added pain screech they give off when dropped in the lava

Come on now the last one was too silly. That's something that doesn't happen on purpose in game. I thought this list was all about what happens canonically in game? Yoshi's death by the player's hands is something that makes no sense to the series itself as a whole. Considering you had Fawful and Dimentio's deaths in this list, why was the most gruesome not the Sammer Kingdom's demise? EVERYONE there died and they weren't just dead, they were wiped from existence! That's a fate worse than death itself!

I always believed that Mario characters (except mario & Luigi or paper Mario characters) are immortal because 1ups mushrooms exists and they always re spawn when you restart a level (thats just a head canon by the way)

Never thought about the common enemies "dying", more like being "defeated" and left behind because they are not harmful anymore. For examples, Goombas are able to regenerate after being squished. Bosses "die" often similar but we see them returning.

you should have added the brown brick blocks in the list (prob top 5) cause in the Super Mario Bros. manual, they were toads that got turned into them by bowser, then theres mario breaking them and unknowingly killing many toads in the process.

Few issues here: Did Bowser Jr. and Paper Bowser Jr. really die? They could've just been exhausted and gave up and lost! Also if you include Yoshi, how could you not include Mario himself then? If the player fails some of those deaths can be brutal depending on where. Besides falling, Mario has been burned in lava, frozen in ice, been eaten, fell in black holes, crushed, drowned. Throughout his adventures he meets a gruesome fate depending on the players incompetence or struggle on a level or battle!

Not a character, but the entire universe is destroyed at the end of Galaxy. Mario and Rosalina are the only survivors, meaning everyone Mario ever knew is dead, with the versions he's interacted with since being recreated copies. That's kind of a dark ending for a game rated E.

I’m surprised that, with Tarantox included, some other regular bosses weren’t. If I were to select one in particular, it’d be Big Guy the Stilted from Yoshi’s Island DS. Once Yoshi delivers the final ground-pound on the mechanical Shy Guy, it breaks open, which, in it of itself, would only put it near the bottom of the list, if anywhere at all. However, what would cement the spot would be that the numerous Shy Guys operating the robot all try evacuating by jumping out of it, all into the boiling lava below, en-masse, in a futile attempt to escape from the sinking mech.

Deaths you forgot: Bowser from Super Mario Galaxy 2 (he is consumed by a black hole and is never seen again in the game, so we confirm it could be a death from that game like Mario Wii) Shadow Queen (she is banished back to her coffin away from life, so that is like a death) Tippy and Count Bleck (the game symbolizes that they have died, but it is hinted that they could be alive. Either way, it is a possible death, like with the Bowser Jrs from Paper Jam, so I think it deserves to be here)

I think the most gruesome Mario death is Bowser in Mario Galaxy 2. In the end cutscene, Bowser is on his planet, watching it all fall apart, before it explodes into a black hole and consumes the entire universe.

Definitely the most gruesome is when Mario, Peach, and Bowser died in Super Mario Galaxy after Bowser’s Galaxy underwent supernova and became a giant black hole, only to be stopped by the Luma’s, even having them bring back the trio and creating the next generation of Luma’s when they became stardust.

I kinda call shenanigans on Bobby, unless it’s explained why Bobby blowing up actually kills him. It’s been long-established canon that partner bobombs in the paper mario franchise blowing up is their basic attack and doesn’t actually hurt them. Even enemies in paper mario generally don’t die, they’re just knocked out (like in the Glitz Pit and the gang of goombas harassing Goombella, etc.) So…yeah. Character death for big sads, but considering what’s already been established and re established? I need more lore than that

Bobby's death is hands down the saddest canon death in a Mario game because at least you don't control his actions unlike Yoshi which a bunch of you probably sacrifice.

I think any death where Mario gets eaten by a giant fish is brutal. He swallowed hole in one bite and therefore has to deal with the full-on experience of being burned alive by its digestive acids. That is horrifying. Yoshi can you buy a giant fish too. And then actually now that I think about it, basically every enemy that Yoshi eats. Although to be honest with how quickly the enemies he swallows turns into eggs maybe the process of him digesting them is actually really quick and maybe the pain is short-lived since the enemies he eats are seemingly digested immediately and turn into an egg. That is unless maybe they are alive inside the egg but that's unlikely considering Yoshi throws the eggs and they explode and nobody comes out from the egg.

Theory: Recovery centers exist in the Mario universe If you don’t know what a recovery center is, then your living under a rock (jk) anyways a recovery center is from Battle For Dream Island, where if a contestant dies, they recover him/her. So basically when a new game is about to come out, a character recovers the people that died in the previous game
