I like to think of it as the Regret that Mario couldn't save Luigi. The regular final boss, which could probably be called Dolor, Self, or Darkness, seems to reflect Mario's depression towards himself, while after collecting the green stars and entering what I can only assume is the Deep Mindscape, Mario confronts his regret that he wasn't able to save his brother, moving on in the process.

If the levels were played out as short things to do with only one timer that acted as a time limit for the whole game, that would’ve been cool. Some of the graphics could’ve been a little better, too. I like how it looks like one of the older styles but some of the textures feel a little off.

Note: pressing read more will reveal the meanings of the endings... If you dont like spoilers then well, *dont touch the button*. Normal ending: from what I can see (and this is all me, I didn't look at any sort of theory video), Mario seems to be waking up after you finish the battle between...shadow mario. There also shows a bottle of pills on the floor when he gets out of bed. I guess that during the fight with his shadow counterpart, that probably means his depression from knowing Luigi's death, he is trying to fight it so it doesn't pull him down and well, kill himself. The bottle of pills must indicate some sort of medication that is helping him to forget but he keeps remembering... The Best Ending: After fighting with the Luigi monstrosity, Mario wakes up but this time, no pills are on the floor, he gets out of his bed and walks outside and plants down flowers on Luigi's grave. Mario has finally overcome his depression and pain for acknowledging Luigi's death, and can start to finally move on. Bonus! The worst ending: this doesn't revolve around the story of the game but, during it, the developer of the game (Ziggity) starts to talk with you and pretty much points hints on why he made this game. He has lost someone in his life that was very close to him and told the story in a way "that is familiar to everyone". In this case, Mario is a very known person in video games so what better way to tell his pain but in a mario sort of fangame... And that's it.
