Super Mario Kart [Bonus] - Helping The Losers Win Using Rubber Banding Tricks

This bonus episode focuses on a thing I used to do all the time as a kid: Manipulating the AI behavior to alter the default race order. The personal challenge adds fun to the same old by forcing you to aid the 8th place character so that he places 2nd at the end, while you still obtain 1st. To do this, you must understand the unique rules Super Mario Kart places on its AI behavior:
1. Super Mario Kart makes use of a mechanic called rubber banding, where the CPU racers get a speed boost to keep the pressure on. In this case, it only applies to the racer directly one position behind you. So by hovering in 7th place, you can cause the 8th place driver to get a speed boost and "slingshot" past the 6th place racer.
2. CPU racers in 1st place down through 5th place will forever fight to stay in that exact position. 6th, 7th, and 8th place are unique in that if they drop back, they will NOT fight to get back to where they were. (Ex. If 8th place climbs up to 6th, he is now the permanent 6th place position, unless he spins out and is passed.)
3. Even if the default 6th, 7th, or 8th CPU places 5th in a race, they will still earn 0 points and be defaulted back to their original spot in the next race. Only placing 4th or higher awards points, which would then make that racer the permanent 5th place position, IF his total points are greater than the default 5th driver but less than the 4th place driver.
So the steps to achieving this challenge are as follows:
1. Slingshot 8th place to 7th using rubber banding (tailgating the next driver), then once again to 6th.
2. Obtain a red shell or other reliable attack item and wipe out the 5th place driver near the end of the final lap, allowing the 6th place (formerly 8th) to pass.
3. Let the 6th place driver pass you and finish in 4th, while you sacrifice a life and place 5th or lower.
4. Upon retrying, the former 8th place driver is now forever fighting to stay in 4th or 5th. So once again, on the final lap, knock out whoever is ahead of him and let him finish in 3rd or higher while you take 4th.
5. In Race 2, get a star or other item and use it to take out 1st and 2nd on the final lap. Let the former 8th place driver finish 1st while you take 2nd.

If you play as Koopa Troopa, he's by default the 1st place racer next to you. Only as Yoshi is he defaulted to last place.

I played this game constantly as a kid and had no idea about any of this. The rubber-banding technique is super interesting and it's crazy how you can manipulate the A.I. to permanently change where they end up in the line-up

As a fact you can reset the race just when the player you want to be the expert is in a convenient position. if you have an star has the first item, use it to crash all first 3 players

Back in the 90's when racing games were programmed like that I used to help the slower drivers by abusing this trick as well. And sometimes I tried to stay in last place as long as possible to keep the rivals around and start to dash through the field to become 1st place before my rivals could catch up again. :D

@@commmander64 Did you play F-Zero X on the Nintendo 64? With 30 racers it was quite amazing to hold back until half a lap before the race was over and then using the boost power to make it to the first place just in time. It wasn't even this hard on lower difficulty since you could see how far the driver in first place is still away. :)

I always used to do this too! I didn't know any of these tricks though, I'd just fight the top guys until they dropped behind the character I wanted in 2nd. This video is exactly the sort of thing I was looking for! Is there a way to abuse this so the AI make mistakes etc in later cups? Or would that be making it harder in the long run? 😂 I never got Gold in 150cc Special Cup..

I used to manipulate the placings of the CPU players to see the lowest spot I could place for the final trophy ceremony. Never got below 5th, but if I call correctly, 5th place looked pretty much the same as 4th place. Yep, I may have had too much time on my hands, hahaha...
