As of right now, NicroVeda is at 2nd place on the any% leaderboard, with a 1h 02m 19s, which is only FOUR SECONDS away from World Record (by Suisaiga). This run would make *11th place,* which is just incredible, considering he did this live in front of about 200 people in the room, and for charity. Well played, Nicro. Well played...

Actually, I feel like this game was made to be an exploration-based game that rewards based on taking your time rather than going as fast as you can.
@lajeandom6 жыл бұрын
you are both right, Nintendo designers thought about both worlds.
@MrOmegatronic6 жыл бұрын
Hmm... it very well might've been, I'm honestly not sure. On the one hand, it very clearly wants you to explore everywhere and everything, and take your time doing so. But on the other hand, movement is _incredibly_ fluid, exploration teaches you how to do crazy shit like Jaxi skip (if you can get on top of the buildings in the Sand Kingdom boss area, Js doesn't feel all _that_ hard in comparison) or just flinging yourself through a level (there are a lot of "necessary" transformations you can avoid entirely just by e.g., scaling nearby architecture and roll-hat-jumping around, even if not all of them are needed or useful in any% speedruns, such as just skipping the parabones or hammer bros. in Underground Moon Crater), there are abilities that were clearly designed specifically for moving faster/skipping stuff/saving time, and you aren't really forced to get the story/cutscene moons to clear a world. And, y'know, it lets you just skip cutscenes anyways. It comes off to me as a game designed to be explored, _then_ speedrun once you know what you're doing. Hell, you can easily pull off a lot of skips completely blind, just _because_ the game teaches you to explore and try everything (of course, some of them aren't necessary, and a few might actually be slower than the intended route, but the fact that the game actively tries to get you to look for skips (and sometimes even do them unintentionally) makes it _very_ friendly to skip-intensive gameplay (such as speedruns)).

Whilst I love the sentiment and passion behind GDQ, the main event is meant to be the games, speedrunning and breaking them, naturally. Having some great commentators is always a bons but unfortunately the reeeeally forced, scripted jokes this time round fell flat a whole lot of the time to the point it nearly put me off watching the rest of the run. I'd fathom a guess that script-writing and stand-up isn't the forte of anyone on the couch, and whilst I appreciate that they maybe had to sit round together, discuss which jokes they wanted to pepper into their script, who'd say what and when and then probably practice this script with eachother (sounds like overkill, huh!) the humour just felt straight up awkward. Aside from that, absolutely amazing run!

I absolutely loved the commentary. I don't know why many people disliked it. Of course it was scripted. Is that bad? I agree that some jokes could have been taken out, and some other parts could have been less scripted, but funny bad jokes are just a part of GDQ and otherwise they delivered non-stop unique, very informative and entertaining commentary like no other and I appreciate trihex and the other putting so much work into it.
@Zenkirune6 жыл бұрын
I don't think the script itself is the issue, if scripted it can be genuinely fine IF the delivery was good. But the issues I have is that... well, it wasn't good, or even that subtle, the person they had to read out the jokes would have been fine if he put oomph into them, but he kept really deadpan with his delivery, not to mention whenever they all shared a joke, which was one of the worst things because it really rubbed in your face that it was scripted. They even scripted *reacting* to bad jokes, which made it feel just... fake? The worst part was probably Spike though, you can tell he wasn't expected to be sitting there and wasn't written into their script. It resulted in one of (in my opinion) GDQ's best commentators, ESPECIALLY on a game he dumped a ton of hours into, just kind of sitting there awkwardly filling air and not saying nearly anything. As the run goes on you can see he just starts getting uncomfortable and it's kind of hard to watch. That said, the actual run itself was beautiful, and when they talked tricks, they did a good job of talking tricks, I adore Odyssey as a speed game, it's just disappointing that the couch's attempts to banter was... that. Even if you go with the angle that it was a parody (The REALLY obviously forced jokes, blatantly looking at slides on a phone, Trihexx intentionally leaking his own script), it wasn't a parody that was funny, and it still doesn't change they kind of outcast Spike by not really including him in the commentary.
@jamiehoward65056 жыл бұрын
I've seen wrestling matches more real than this
@TimoKanal6 жыл бұрын
Well I don't care about Spike sitting there awkwardly honestly, I love him but I care about the commentary and concentrate on the game and speedrun. You don't have to get uncomfortable just because others maybe got uncomfortable, I didn't even look at him during the run and I'm sure Spike is fine with it because he commentates on so many other runs. And it's definitely true that some things were just overscripted and stuff that can be improved on the next time they plan a commentary, I just really think it was not nearly as bad as some people make it out to be.
@Tustin21216 жыл бұрын
Zenkirune - I agree, wasting Spike on the couch was the cherry on top of this horribleness. Some of the best commentaries come from when the guys on the couch know the game being played by heart and can explain in depth about why something happened at the drop of a hat. This whole thing being pre-scripted down to the jokes made it feel like they were there for namesake rather than because they knew the run.
@bert62366 жыл бұрын
I just thought a majority of the jokes were bad or cringy. For example at 39:14 the whole terrible breath thing, I would've much rather them talk about how the trick (where can talk to the shopkeeper from so far away) works instead of some joke. Could just be me though, I prefer informative over "entertaining" commentary. I feel that the gameplay and tricks are entertainment enough, and with how fast some of these game speedruns are having these tricks explained helps understand what is going on.
