I really want this, but I no longer live near friends as I'm 31 years old and can't just call up friends at school like way back at the series' start. We're all in different states these days too. My wife and I are playing friday with one of our 'couples friends'. My old friends are long gone too, thing is that most of your old friends only became your friends due to the forced proximity of school; there are plenty of people near you I'm sure who'd be up to playing and just as good of friends, you just have to make new friends :)

@@Lexgamer - True. Being married similarly can force you into those "couple friendships" the same way childhood proximity equates to friends. Being single and kind of solitary, it's harder. Co-workers are just coworkers to me, and very rarely strike me as someone I'd want to hang out with outside of work. The rest of days are filled with necessity stuff and great efforts to not spend money, and relaxing away from people. Before you know it, it's back to work again, and the cycle repeats. None of that is really marketable socially, unless you love public embarrassment. That's my trouble with it anyway.

Even though you won't buy this now, consider that Nintendo first party games are kind of rock solid in terms of retail price. It won't change a lot for the next 1-2 years. But I mean, there could be a lot happening in those years. You might find a SO oder friends! Cheer up buddy!

Aye, I was about to recommend that maybe you can play a round or two of Mario Party with your workmates, but from the sound of it, you probably have a bit of a different work environment than I do. Even then, if you feel bold enough, maybe it isn't such a bad idea to ask around for people interested?

Nice review! Sounds like it's good, but could be better, which I think is a good start. I'm glad they're going back to their roots and finding a balance between old and new. With a little more polish, or DLC, this could be the start of the return of Mario Party!

@@jonahdell1708 As far as I'm concerned, Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, ARMS, Kirby Star Allies, and Mario Odyssey were all complete games with good content upon release. The only game I'd say that wasn't the case for is Mario Tennis Aces.

Splatoon 2 was a finished game, BUT it started with only 8 stages; now it has 23. It has triple the gear than in release. It has 4 Salmon Run stages compared to the original two. And it also got a new ranked mode back in December. All that for free. Yes, it is a finished game, but they knew it could be much more better. They could do the same for Mario Party

So this appears to be similar to Mario Tennis Aces...? A great revival to a Mario spin-off sub-series, but mainly just better than the Wii U predecessor. I don't understand why there are just four boards; that baffles me, to say the least. Anyhow, Super Mario Party looks like it will be a grand time. I can't wait to play it in person tomorrow night! I suspect that working on The Top 100 and Pocket Camp (though I presume most of those guys are leading an Animal Crossing spinoff) cut staff a little short compared to Wii Party U (the last content-complete game ND Cube did IMO). TBH, Super Mario Party seems a lot like it was a Wii Party game that was reskinned midway through development (UI, sound effects, a lot of gimmick based modes)

Lack of anything feeling fleshed out was my concern - "80 Minigames" being a selling point while a bunch of modes were getting showcased, not all of them could share minigames. Also a shame that there's only 4 boards, that's more surprising to me than not having enough minigames to go around the modes. Hopefully they won't feel the need to go back to square 1 for minigames this time round, and will instead take a more like additive approach going forward (or, well, DLC - Do we need Super Mario Party 2 (Mario Party 12?) until there's a system not backwards compatible with the Switch, as opposed to either free or paid DLC that adds a bunch of new minigames to various modes and a board or two?) - 80 new minigames, plus some making a return from Super (and perhaps prior installments)

I have to say this review solidifies why I trust this channel. They at least mention everything to he experienced even if it can't be accessed during the review. And you guys make sure to mention even though you didn't enjoy all of it there was fun parts and certain people will like it more than others. Many Nintendo games have been extremly light on content for a good decade. It's just Nintendo being very lazy and nothing else. It's just that since Mario Kart 8 they've been slightly less lazy with content but if you look at recent games like arms or Mario tennis they also have very light content at launch.

This is actually my very first Mario Party game I’ll be purchasing, ever, I’ve played every other Mario spin-off game in existence, Kart, Tennis, etc. But never got around to the party games

As someone whos played most of these games since the very first one, I immeditaley became suspicious when I saw the previews regarding the boards. I think I can speak on behalf of most old fans that the boards were the heart n soul of the series and not only arent that many here, they re also short as hell. To me, having a vast and complex map with multiple paths to take and explore, really added to the xperience. I also felt that not rewarding players who loose minigames was a neat idea....in fact, MP1 straight out takes 10 coins from you if you loose, adding yet another layer of intensity to each round. Someone hire the remaining Hudson staff fom the clutches of Konami, please! :D

There actually is a practice mode, it’s the little screen you see during the explanation of the mini-game. You are actually able to control your character in this little screen! Also, it does tell you how to hold the JoyCon during a mini-game, it’s in the top right corner of the explanation screen.

MarioFan587 Oh yeah. Island Tour was definitely good. The boards were a bit hit-or-miss for me personally, but I did appreciate the variety of rules. Plus, I love the Bowser's Tower mode, especially with Bowser Jr. getting unique dialogue from his papa. The minigames were also fun.

Grant Campbell The fact that they’re small is pretty, but a board doesn’t have to be big tp be fun. Plus having 4 boards isn’t really that different because most of the time, people only stick to 2 to 4 boards. There’s always those boards that no one wants to play. Which is a shame. It was rare when I had people that wanted to play Waluigi’s Island, arguably the most difficult and insane board in the series, but it was so fun!

The boards are small to compensate for the (standard) dice blocks only being 1-6 rather than 1-10, a change which makes low rolls less frustrating.

Ehh I'm sure it's a fun game, but I really don't want all these spinoffs and side series to become like this. While big budget core series games like the Marios and the Zeldas get these games that are almost everything people asked for, the side series like the sports games and Mario Party are either just barely enough or not quite enough. I appreciate the effort that went into this game but I don't want to buy a game that is just a good starting point. I really hope we can get a Mario Sports game that's a more full experience and the same with another Mario Party but I kind of doubt the latter. Please, I don't want other side series to keep feeling like "Just good enough!"

Great review! There *is* a practice mode, however. You can all play a practice round in the upper left corner, and the real mini-game doesn't start until everyone's pressed SR and SL.

I'm gonna ask a question regarding the fact you can't use a Pro Controller and that the game isn't compatible in Handheld Mode (that's not tabletop mode). Because I've been seeing people complain about these on Twitter to the point of canceling their pre-order or straight up boycotting the game. Are those limitations really enough to ruin the game for some? I know the joy-cons and motion controls won't be for everyone, but I don't really think that's enough to warrant missing out.

Alex Ramirez A lot of people don't like being forced to use motion controls. It only detriments the longevity of the game more often than not. Now if we were given the option for standard and motion, I can bet nearly everyone wouldn't be as bothered by this.

What NDCube did here was good. They have shown nice potential for the future. But they still need more practice before they can earn 'master" status" like Hudson. So far, they are out of the "trash" status, skipped the "rookie" status and just made it to "student" status. Two more statuses are left for them. Expert status and Master status

Ughhh it feels like they purposely tried really hard not to make the boards fun. Like, they limited them self’s and told them self’s “let’s not have fun making this, and not be creative and let’s make it basic!” The first few mario parties just ooze so much creativity and charm and originality. Like the developer were making a game THEY wanted to make. They were having fun with it..but not here..it looks horrible and I’m already sick of seeing this game because I feel like I’ve already seen it all 100 times

Nintendo has been increased its content updates since the Wii U, so they could add more boards and content if they chose to, but this sounds good for a reboot of the series. 10 was OP with Bowser, so this is worth it.

why these motion controls minigames lol ! I though that was WarioWare Thing ! One of the big reasons I havent play any Mario Party Since gamecube. I remember minigames being more around skills then Luck ! shake the bottle to drop fruits ? Shake the control to put air ? pet without waking up ? do you guys really enjoy those minigames? its so bland ! Mario Party 4 minigames were way more around skills than luck ! Seems like my prediction has come true. It's the Mario Tennis Aces of Mario Party: A game that comes off the heels of several awful ones with some interesting changes. However, while it is indeed a big leap over the bad games and is a step in the right direction, it's still not the return to form we hoped and looses tracking at a decent pace.

Only having 4 maps is disappointing but with how Nintendo has been adding free content over time in their multiplayer games, I wouldn't be surprised if there were updates that added new game boards and characters

That would require actually working online. So far the switch is really bad with online and has big issues. Either the game disconnect people for no reason or it can be laggy as hell depending on the game. But yes online would be neat and they could easily have an auto save feature and if anyone crashes the game offers to either wait the player or load the auto save or something like that

I mean a Mario Party with 4 boards of normal gameplay only aint so bad at all for the base game. Besides we still have that Star Rush esque mode and whatnot : Sure small variety , but at least this is NDCubes first Mario Party done right (after 2 weird home console, 2 out of place handheld and a single return of the old Minigames that can be enjoyable). As long as the gameplay is great and i have fun, even 4 boards would be fine by me. Its good to start small sometimes, so that you can build up on it later on ^^

Only 4 boards, the boards are small in size, you’re unable to play said boards online even though they could have very easily replaced those that leave with AI. It went from giving Nintendo my money directly to buying it second hand. They don’t deserve it.

Think about how hard it would be to play boards online without someone rage-quitting or lag. Boards last a long time and I don’t think 4 people could sit in a room together anywhere from a half an hour to an hour. As for the boards themselves- the sizing is perfect. Mario Party 8’s boards were (in my opinion) too large and discouraged me from playing the party mode.

D Blooper Think about how fucking stupid it is that I can’t play the game with my friends (because none of them live close by) in a 60$ multiplayer game in 2018. As far as randoms go, so what? The option is better than not having one at all. As others have mentioned, they could replace dropped players with AI. Also, I think people tend to underestimate how many gamers online are actually good people. They aren’t all toxic. If you wish to play a whole match, you can imagine that you aren’t the only one who does.

2 things you got wrong. It does show you how to hold the joycon and there is a practice mode (technically)... it tells you how to hold the joy on before the mini game in the top right corner of the screen. And the practice mode is literally in the mini game screen as everyone readys up

@@xdiamondx5721Horrible comparison. You do know that MK8D is a newer entry? Therefore, It _should_ be adding more content than MK64, which it is. Not less like Super Mario Party which isn't even drastically different in mechanics to the older Mario Parties, whereas MK64 at least is different mechanically which gives it a unique experience you can't get with other MKs. No excuse for having 4 boards, don't be a sheep. I would've been fine with 7, but whatever. Playing on the same 4 boards will eventually get boring, even with friends.

The POINT of this mario party is to bring back the old mario parties. They will most likely introduce new mechanics in the next Anyone would get bored eventually, even if there were a million boards. You have never specified exactly HOW much time it will probably take. And also, the game isn't even out yet. So if you quit your whining and give the game a chance, you might change your mind.

Why are you exaggerating? I would've at least hoped they'd stick with the series standard of having around 7 boards, but they don't, which is disappointing. Why are you getting worked up over that? If they put two boards in the next game, you'd probably be okay with it too. What a joke... Mario Party 9 and 10 don't fit these comparisons either, they are differently designed games with the car mechanic, they weren't boards you could individually roam on like SMP. They were bad games because the car mechanic was limiting, the content didn't matter because the concept wasn't engaging. I don't know why you're mentioning them either - as if to say SMP returning to the original mechanics and not 9 and 10s justifies less content for SMP compared to those two games because it plays like the older ones which had better concepts. Like no. You can't justify it. They either rushed the game for a September release or were lazy. I've already seen gameplay and the size of the boards, they're no better than the past MPs (1-8), in fact, they are poorly designed so far. Yes, they've added more items and events happening on those boards, but it's not like those additions (which I consider trivial) hindered the creation of more boards. And also, I never mentioned anything about not giving the game a chance because of the lack of boards etc. you're just assuming that because I'm just complaining about the boards. I will give it a chance, I just know for a fact that the lack of content is going have to deter me from binging on this like I can with other games. Besides, who wants to pay $60 for less content in a new entry? smfh. I just HOPE there are more boards, which is still possible, but if there aren't, I'm just not going to like it as much. I could probably play Smash 5 endlessly because the content is there, even if it is overkill.

Got it yesterday and I love it. I don't mind if it just has four boards, there are many different ways to play: Challenge mode, online minigame mode, team party, normal party mode and finally we are back to the way the game is supposed to be played rather than that damn car. I'm sure there will be some DLC boards eventually.

I'm so excited that they went back to the roots, the last few games seemed like experiments gone wrong. I'm hoping if it's as good as I think, gameplay wise, they could just release DLC to bulk it up and make it last longer, like more games and maps.
