As a kid, the fact that this version of Mario had a temper was always amusing to me as well as fitting given all of the BS he goes through. A bit ironic, however, that I don't think any of that temper ever really gets directed at Bowser outside of the prologue despite he and Bowser being the main pain in each others' sides.

Yeah, Mallow isn't bad, but he's rather quickly outclassed unfortunately. Bowser somewhat has the same issue to be honest.

Mallow has the cheapest multi-target attack in the game; he was arguably the best one to have in your party if you wanted to get through normal battles as quickly as possible (especially in the pirate ship area where a lot of things are weak to lightning). But now you target multiple enemies just by doing the action command, so...

0:44 There is one big change from the original in peach’s castle, there is a hidden chest with a collectable coin above her door, and the only way to get it is jumping on a toad’s head and using that as leverage… but that toad only appears once, and you only have 10 seconds to get on their head before they are gone forever… but in the remake, when you come back, the toad just walks in the hallway and is there forever

In the original, there were a couple of NPC Toads in that room. I remember when I was little, finding out about that coin and realizing I had missed it, and spending an hour slowly blocking the Toad's path to force him to wander right up to that wall. Something else about the party members that can be swapped in: if you somehow wipe, the other character(s) will automatically jump in so you can keep the battle going, use a Pick-Me-Up on Mario, swap in the original (downed) crew and get them back up, too. I only ever had this happen on the upgraded boss rematches, but it's a super nice mechanic to have.
@Alloveck Жыл бұрын
2:53 This is 100% correct. Playable Bowser > just about any other character. Add Peach having a guaranteed place as well, and that you can't drop Mario no matter what, and there just isn't any room for the OCs. You'd better knock it out of the park with the new characters if you expect me to use them instead of Bowser and Peach. My response to "Geno in Smash" has always been "Who? Wait, there were other party characters in Mario RPG? I... guess that seems right now that you mention it?" My utter disinterest in Mallow and Geno aside though, I really can't praise the visuals of this remake enough. I'm pretty okay with updating or changing gameplay in a remake, but art direction and aesthetics are where my nostalgia lives. If I want a remake of a beloved classic, there's only one way to do it right: Update the technical aspects of the visuals, but make absolutely no change to the art direction. I want it to look like the same artists, with the same creative intent, had tried to accomplish the same vibe they had gone for originally, but on today's hardware. Fail to do that, and I'm out. Good riddance to retro technical limitations, but without the original visual style under those limitations the soul is gone. And I really can't think of any remake that has recreated the original style more faithfully than this one. It's unfortunately a bittersweet success though, since Mario RPG never exactly had my favorite art style in the first place. I've always loathed the prerendered 3d thing, and none of its original ally or enemy designs did much for me. But at least I finally have one remake I can point to as a perfect example of updating the visual presentation while maintaining the original art direction. (If anything it stuck visually closer to the original than needed, since it didn't just maintain the art direction, it even kept the same fixed top-down camera and other purely presentational aspects that I'd be fine with updating. But at least it absolutely NAILED style recreation specifically.) If only the FFVII remakes had stayed even half as faithful to the creative style of the original version, I might have actually cared about them. I'm 100% okay with the radically changed gameplay, but the characters look so very wrong now. On top of that, it really hurts that the upcoming Thousand Year Door remake didn't get the Mario RPG level of stylistic accuracy, because I liked its original art direction much more than Mario RPG's. But of course, as per all the newer Paper Mario games, it had to be "updated" into going way too hard on the actually, literally in-universe made of paper aesthetic. So yeah, super cool that the game fffaarrr less near and dear to my heart gets its visuals perfectly recreated, but the one I LOVED as is does get its style messed with. I'm pretty sure they only did Mario RPG so correctly to make messing up the more important one sting even harder.

"NOPE, the original game is pretty easy, but we thought it should be a cake walk! but in case that not enough for you, we made an even EASIER difficulty for a brain dead stroll!" also that ending is great. especially having watch Chuggaconray's tear down of Sticker Star on why its one of the worst games. the dude is actively showing facts of comparison to what came before of what makes a good Mario RPG and how it just fails at almost every possible step, he does find very little good in the game, he does not deny the existence that SOMETHING in the game is done well, but it is far outweighed by everything else. the best part of his videos was his big highlight about the mandates for the lack of unique characters being entirely on the people making the games. it is entirely self inflicted despite that nobody told them to do it much less keep doing it.

That's dissappointing to know they didn't balance the enemies when they gave the allies a team attack and perfect timing bonus. If they have an even easier mode then that should have the team attack and perfect timing and just leave normal mode like it was back in the original game. This worries me now for the thousand year door remake. These games don't need an easy mode or if they add one then made it optional and keep the difficulty of the original. The first Hammer Bro gets one-shot, the second one casts Valor Up and takes two. The damage/HP scaling even on normal is WAY tuned down even without the extra additions of AOE timed hits. This game was never nut-crushingly challenging but it is definitely way, way easier now overall. Which is a weird choice for what I consider the most beginner-friendly JRPG-style game ever made who's name isn't Mystic Quest. Also they removed a few more things, Mario's Pad is now called 'Mario House' on the sign instead of 'Pipehouse' and Kinklinks are now Chaindeliers. Looks like they hard-edited anything that could have been used for innuendo.

That ‘Super mario-o rpg is the only game just for me’ reference at the start really caught me off guard nsjwnxj

I’m loving the fact that younger gamers are getting the same experience I had in the 90’s! Mario’s pantomime was one of my favorite things and they do such a wonderful job translating it all. Such a treat! ❤️

Yes, but us oldheads had been waiting for a proper sequel for 27 years. We really should've came first

2 Peach is not always a good thing. Exhibit A: Pinkgold Peach.

It's Nice. They kept most the original stuff in and added new things. That spices up the gameplay. 0:49 What about Peach's secret item ? You know... only real one's know.

"peaches' ???" is surprisingly enough still in the game.

The "Peach's ???" easter egg is still in the game, as are the Link and Samus Easter eggs.

Hey Scott I don’t know what you were thinking with the new editing style. It feels too youtuberish something I don’t really feel like is you

You forgot to mention that the super jump frames are no longer just 3, they doubled them so it's easier to get the super suit.

I was wondering about this. Took me a day or two of nonstop battles to get the super suit as a kid.

That is literally the greatest thumbnail I've ever seen. I mean, I'm not even sure why, it just is.

iv noticed mario doesnt do the peace sign but tips his cap now. he also spins slower. some of the sound affects dont show up when they use to. like when croco jumps and runs his feet, it doesnt make the tiking sound before the fast weeoo sound. small nitpicks, i know.

30:00 that is the tricky business isn't it... how do you be faithful, while also doing something new? Because yeah BDSP is crap, it's a copy paste yet somehow magically worse game on so many levels than the original DP, doesn't help Platinum has so many features they didn't include. Meanwhile PE did the same, it made some advancements, cute little bonuses like GREEN FINALLY EXISTS FOR THE 1ST TIME IN THE GAMES, and the Master Trainers... but that's it, FRLG still superior with how much story and world, character development in the fame checker that was added. ORAS was the perfect balance, old content, reuse of story and characters, BUUUUT still had so much new content that it felt like a brand new game. New characters, new story, new world locations, so many goodies like FRLG and HGSS, only downside was lack of Emerald Battle Frontier. Meanwhile... ehh I'm content with the Ocarina and Majora's Mask remakes. Honestly despite not doing too much different from their original 64 or even the Gamecube counterparts, they're solid remakes, they're amazing in fact. So the question is... does it depend on genre? Well no, both Pokemon and Zelda are RPGs... franchise?... maaaybe? Because we expect more out of Pokemon because we got good remakes in the past? Meanwhile Zelda and Mario rarely remake things, if ever because Papa Miyamoto doesn't like to, thinks his golden children are perfect as is. So games like Ocarina or Mario RPG only receiving quality of life updates... does that make them bad remakes? or are they ok for what they are? Tricky business to figure out.
