Your guy searching for the red happy bird might be a reference to Tingle from Zelda Majora's Mask who has also been searching for a a fairy for 30+ years, his balloon is red, and one of the fairies in MM is reddish, and Tingle remains happy/positive even though a moon is about to destroy Termina. Tingle also has unique sound effects, especially his yelp when you pop his balloon.

Little nod to Splatoon 3. Big Man's boss fight in that game is pretty much a reference to Mario Sunshine's Manta Ray boss fight. Same mechanics, same division o. Manta Rays
