@andrewbarrett15372 жыл бұрын
He did not sight read THIS. He sight read a relatively simple score of the tune which I think Ron O’Dell made and which might still be on Ron’s website. Tom then added his own musical touches, IMPROVISING as he went along. This MIDI was made from a transcription of the video recording of his improvisation . I can do the same thing although not at this high of a level. This type of thing was required of all “song pluggers” in the old days who were employed either demonstrating sheet music of new tunes at music stores, or else were employed directly by the publisher themselves to “show off” their songs via making elaborate arrangements and improvisations. Fortunately, some of these artists, who were great classically trained pop pianists, made records and/or piano rolls which we can hear today. They include (for starters) Seymour Furth; Jack Glogau; Bert F Grant; George Gershwin; Bertha Wolpa (AKA “Bertha Walker” or “Bee Walker”); and many others.

If you listen to enough AUDIO RECORDINGS of original vintage pianists on my other channel “Great Pianists”, you’ll ask the same thing; but they really played all that. Luckily many of the roll artists (not all) made audio recordings so we can compare and contrast with their piano rolls. Some of them like Pauline Alpert, Frank Banta, Henry Lange, Ray Perkins etc are WIZARDS who were ALL OVER THE PIANO and hearing their original recordings, after hearing a roll and expressing skepticism, is a jaw-dropping experience.
