This video features about the nicest, original '67 Blackface Princeton Reverb you will ever see. It was sent in by a viewer for an electronic overhaul, and the video follows the step-by-step process, including the installation of a new electrolytic "can" capacitor and enhancement of the Tremolo intensity. In addition there are two workshop sessions with the 1930 Ford Model A "Rat Rod"......to move the seat forward (so the pedals can be reached :) and to fabricate and test a pair of exhaust baffles.

Hey Unky, I am a little late on this one! Beautiful Post CBS Blackface Princeton! WHy does it seem that you have a video on everyone of the same projects that I happen to be working on?! BTW my Bassman chassis recap restuff came out beautiful! Anyways I Just finished two of these little Princeton Reverbs. One was an actual real pre cbs BF from 64 the other a 1978 conversion back to BF/SF style circuit . While much of the circuit on these Princetons remained the same from the end of the BF to the beginning of the SF era the biggest change became the change of the power transformer along with change of the rectifier tube to a GZ34. My point that I am getting at is your comment about what a treat it is seeing a unmolested stock unit, giving you reference for future restoration. So with few changes as we see CBS take over production , the little Princeton amp remains dressed in its BF threads a little while before making a mostly cosmetic changeover to its Glitz and Glam CBS shiny silver exterior..... Even though the circuit remains unchanged electrically, you certainly notice how much more sloppy they get with the wiring and lead dress. Even that post CBS BF is so much more neater and cleaner than as the SF began to progress. They must of had a large turnover in the assembly department or at least the assembly management. The leads certainly get much longer and more inconsistient and much messier as the SF production evolved. You express mixed feelings regarding the issue of recapping a pristine all stock unit with new production non OEM parts, specifically those expensive can capacitors? Of course there is always point to point with new caps under the board. (I like to install a couple of terminal strips to tag 'em on to. But after doing the Bassman I say why not just restuff those old tired cans with modern component and have your cake and eat it too. I dont know why someone hasnt relicensed many of these old skool components and started making authentic reproduction parts? Of course they are starting to do that but they dont look like the old parts. Oh and ouch ! How expensive! Think of all those black beauty and rainbow paper molded crap caps that got thrown away! Even the dominoes are being sought after these days. How hard would it be to make bootlegs of these things? Hell they made tons of bootleg quaaluudes with pill presses back in the day, why not caps? Whoa yeah careful with that big ol' heavy iron used on those tabs! Does that thing require 220v 40 amp service. Seriously! Be careful! you could burn yourself or your shop down with that ugly old steampunk Iron! It belongs in the smithsonian or something. Here is a tip.... I use the hot air from my rework station . Ya know the blower with all those different sized nozzles used for flowing surface mount? Works like a champ and very neatly removes and also reflows those big solder chassis connections making for a very pristine factory solder blobs. Imagine having like a tiny micro torch of precision flame. Thats how I do it..... Just like many of my posts,,,, a bunch of hot air! WOW! Just got another Sliverface Princeton,,,, 1968 orig drip edge . Nonreverb this time.... Thank you for the tremolo enhancement. It certainly may be helpful when running the bias hotter like yours was. I was suprised that you made no mention of the unique cathodyne phase inverter of these amps and the fact that the tremolo is truly product of oscillating the tube and loading up the bias.... If you run the dissapation too hot and there is not enough bias left to pull away the tremolo runs out of steam. Typically you hear the cats using these amps always want more headroom and more power. Kinda the opposite of what these amps give us. Unfortunately they dont have the greatest sounding breakup. I think it is because it is that PI being overdriven and run over before having a chance to ring the output tubes. So we likely are hearing the PI distortion instead of the power amp distortion. I find that running the dissipation hotter wont help and you actually are better off running them cooler with more bias voltage and larger bias cap too. The older higher voltage PT with a GZ34 helps open these amps up too. So many guys go all mod crazy on these poor little guys changing the trannys and running 6L6's I think that they should be more appreciated for what they are and they should quit trying to make them sound like a twin ! The beauty is that they are a lightweight amp with a unique sound with easy early breakup that is inbetween a tweed and blackface deluxe. Put an Alnico speaker and be done with it! You likely share my same opinion? Thanks for the vids!!! You seem to have all my projects covered! Glad I can always do like my nephews and go see how Unky does it first! Funny too is that I have another screen name that utilizes my given middle name which happens to be Doug. But in my household you would swear my first name was Unkie when those boys are always around here! Stay healthy SIR DOUGLAS! Wash your hands often and maintain social distance! AGAIN STAY HEALTHY there are more projects yet to be done yet!

Re restoration of a beer can, of a sort..... my parents had a cottage on the shores of Long Island Sound that they bought when I was a baby. The water heater was semi-exposed in a little recessed vestibule by a narrow doorway entrance and there was no easy way to hide it and still have it accessible for draining or flushing at the beginning or end of the summer season. My mother disguised it by painting it to resemble a giant beer can, very realistically, although unfortunately I no longer remember what brand of beer can she copied or emulated when she painted the thing. It was pretty cool however, and she got a lot of positive comments on it. Unfortunately, my parents sold the cottage when I was about 20, because they thought that the crowd that my sister and I were running with during the summer were a "bad influence", and they wanted to protect my little sister from exposure to that sort of "riff-raff". As if such a thing was possible...... when the reality is that if one's personality leans toward running with "riff raff", then even if you live in Antarctica or on the Moon, you will find some riff-raff to run with! It wasn't like we really did anything to clean bad, we weren't slashing tires or stealing cars or breaking into empty cottages; after a day of fishing or swimming or water skiing and such, we were pretty tired, and we just kind of hung out on the beach and drank a few beers and maybe smoked some pot. Pretty normal American rite-of- passage stuff for teenagers during the 70's, really. By the way, we had PFD ( personal flotation device) boat cushions about the same color as the naugahyde seats in your Rat Rod!

@@wildbillhackett, I'm 61 and my body feels like it's been through the ringer. I may not technically be older than dirt yet, but it sure feels that way much of the time. Actually I was telling the youngsters who hang out over at Brad the Guitologist's channel, who grew up on the music of the 1980s, that not only am I glad to be a decade or more older than them, because I experienced better music in the early 70s but I wish I was at least five years older and that way I probably could have been at Woodstock!

@@taky2686 , although I did not actually see the band perform, I did see Rick Danko and Richard Manuel playing together as a Duo, maybe just a year or two before they died. Both suicides as I recall, sadly. Blues woman Rory Block was the opener for that show. When Brad the guitologist was discussing what a badass he was as a kid with his Michael Jackson jacket, around the same time frame he was talking about, I was going to see concerts by people such as Johnny Winter, James Cotton, Doc Watson, Leon Redbone, Al Di Meola John McLaughlin & Paco de Lucia, Steve Morse and the Dixie Dregs, Pat Metheny, Jean-Luc Ponty, the Jan Hammer Trio, Stephane grappelli, Taj Mahal, Sonny Terry and brownie McGhee, Elizabeth Cotten, Marshall Tucker Band, The Grateful Dead, the Police, and so on and so forth. I pretty much hated most of the music from the 1980s, and although as they say hindsight is 20/20, I wouldn't have wanted to grow up in that decade for all the gold in Fort Knox. Hell, if I was 10 years older, I probably would have hitchhiked my way out to California to be at the Monterey Pop Festival! I could have been at Woodstock, I was just a couple years too young for that one. Of course, on the plus side of the column, I was just a little too young, going a little too late, to get shipped off to Vietnam. Anyway, I sure am glad I didn't grow up thinking that wearing a Michael Jackson jacket and imitating the moonwalk was the do all and end all of musical culture. And Michael Jackson's Legend doesn't look so good nowadays anyway. I was working in audio stores selling and installing Hi-Fi equipment in the late 70s and early 80s, and doing nightclub sound system work on the side, and when people started listening to Michael Jackson as Speaker demonstration music in the Hi-Fi store, that's when I started looking elsewhere for music that would feed my soul and provide an antidote for the bad pop music that I was hearing at work on a regular basis. The early 1980s was when I discovered Ry Cooder, David Lindley and El Rayo X, Leo Kottke and other great guitarists with a more organic approach to music. In the mid-to-late eighties I discovered Richard Thompson and John Hiatt and that furthered my journey through music, a journey that continues to this day.

Yes remarkable when you think that these were really considered student amplifiers and that most of them went out to some teenage wannabe that didnt take care of them too well. Think how many kids garage bands these things were at, kicked to the corner collecting dust all torn and tattered . Especially as the 80's came on and an old fender just wasnt cool, lil johnny wanted that 100 watter crate or cool heavy metal distortion peavy 100watt solid state buzz box.

That amp has been in a time warp, surely? Amazing! Did it spend its life in a studio I wonder? The temp and humidity controlled atmosphere in a high-end studio is the only environment I can think of that would have had so little effect. The resistors will probably have barely drifted with humidity. To be sure, if I ever came across an amp in such condition I couldn't think of anyone I'd rather send it to for an overhaul than your good self, Doug. I'll just make sure to NOT use UPS to ship it! WAY back circa 1980 while in college, I sang in a band in San Antonio. The band was two guitar players, bass, drummer, and me. One guitarist played a Mesa Boogie, the other played a Princeton. Both great amps. The fellow who played the Princeton had a professional cabinet maker build a new cabinet out of bird's eye maple. It was pretty much an exact replica of the Fender cabinet, in terms of size, angles, etc. It did not kill the sound at all, just was a really cool looking amp. Oh, and before he did the conversion, the tolex and speaker grill were shot (he bought it at a pawn shop,) so it was just a great improvement in the look. But if I looked as good as that Princeton you are working on, at my age, I'd be one happy camper indeed! Thanks, and thumbs up!

Re wimpy stock tremolo; if a fresh tube in the tremolo oscillator circuit doesn't improve the tremolo, just replace the capacitors in the circuit. Regardless of the amplifier brand, nine times out of 10, if the tremolo isn't working well or isn't working at all, and a fresh tube doesn't improve it or repair it, the caps in the oscillator are the cause of the problem. Also good to check to make sure that none of the resistors in that area have drifted off spec. I personally would not have modified the circuit without putting some fresh capacitors in there first to see if the performance was improved.

I have the opposite experience with parcel companies.... Fedex having destroyed stuff, whereas my annoyance with UPS is the packing jobs by the UPS Store (which isn't directly UPS).... I sell amps on Reverb, pack them myself, and have had no real UPS complaints when I did the packing job... selecting a tough enough box, and immobilizing it inside said box. UPS Store's packing job almost demolished a Stroboconn.... but the other one I own (packed by seller) made it very safely.

Jayne Mansfield's measurements were more like "42 - 24 - etc.", not 38-24...the Princeton is beautiful. When I saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan I knew what I had to do. It took me eight years, from that moment, to acquire a decent guitar - Les Paul Junior - one hundred bucks. In 1969 my rich bud loaned me his Harmony archtop and I fell in love with it. He really needed to give me that guitar. He never played it and his parents would buy him anything but a car. He wanted a double-bass and whammo, he gets a double bass. He is in FB with his perfect family in Virginia in a huge three-story house. I am in a tiny Hollywood room surrounded by microwaved retards (cellphones and computers utilize what is called a microwave field and should you really expose your kids to that?) and a deep hatred for YT channels that hate poor people or at least has never chosen to "talk" to a poor person. When I hate the haters I'm not helping much, am I. They don't really hate poor people they just DON'T KNOW ANY. Sorry to shout. Street people are my best audience if you are into categories. I really want to feel gratitude for the six months that Marc allowed me to borrow his throwaway guitar. I am building a shimisen from materials in my room. I love these old-timer vids. I'd do my own however my neighbors have other ideas. Imagine being surrounded on six sides by microwaved retards. As I writer and luthier and multi-instrumentalist I have about 3 "co-creator" (where you allow the spirits to do the writing, playing, drawing, singing - very low because godhelpme if freckle-face above me should wake up - basically you surrender to the muses, like when Uncle Doug plays guitar). The first Uncle Doug video I saw a week ago was actually suggested by YT due to my Maker proclivities and at the end of it he played terrible guitar and I thought "is this going to happen in every amp restoration?" and I reluctantly allowed his next vid to play and I'm glad I did. His playing on the first vid (Fender Champ/Princeton vid?) was terrible only that one time I was relieved to find out. I love hearing the classic amps shine. One more thing. Sir Paul McCartney - get off your "cute" butt and give thousands of ukuleles to street people with an instruction pamphlet and extra strings you bloody bastard. I have met two Beatles so I win.

Uncle Doug, how feasible would it be to build an amp like this from the schematic along with photos of the chassis for reference?
@danielgarlans2203
@danielgarlans2203 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not Doug, but I'm actually in the process of doing almost exactly that. Going from a pure schematic to a completed project is doable but more difficult than you need. A much better option is to buy a turret board and maybe even a chassis from somewhere like Hoffman Amps. The benefit of doing it that way is that you still have a lot of DIY to do (soldering and mounting everything for example) but you're working with a roadmap and directions that are guaranteed to work. The biggest challenge I have found with amp building is converting a schematic into a physical layout, because if you're not careful you can end up with a very sub-optimal design.
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 5 жыл бұрын
The circuit is not particularly complex, Eric, but, as Daniel says, it would be easier to buy a chassis or even a kit if you are not experienced in amp building.

Uncle Doug: I'm building a AA1164 Princeton Reverb and have a chassis and eyelet board and also have a Turret Board. The guy who I got the turret board from said I should use standoffs, which require drilling the chassis. I would prefer to just use the backerboard from the eyelet board and prefer wiring the amp up using a turret board. He said "If you combine the turret to the backer board, over time the turret board may bow from heat -- this could eventually lead to a chassis rattle between the turret board and the backer board" YOUR THOUGHGTS PLEASE.
@UncleDoug

I personally don't use either method, SMM, so I have no experience with the issue you described....but if the guy you got it from has personally experienced (i.e. he is not simply speculating) the rattling problem, then I would tend to believe him. Be sure he speaks from a position of experience.....and trust him if he does.

Uncle Doug is there a way to tame the Fender Reverb tank it's tube driven. The Verb over 2 & it's really too much verb for me. The Amp also has a Vibrato thats tube driven & is much more subtle you really don't hear the Vibrato to the intensity is at lest 6 . But when the Vibrato is engaged it has that Pulse / Heart Beat you spoke of which is pretty loud when turn down cranked it's much louder Ghost Thump /Click that go's w/the speed of the Vibrato can that heartbeat ghost pulse be cleaned up? I just bought this Custom Deluxe Reverb new , I really have an issue w/that pulsing. Thanks Uncle Doug for all your great work.

About the only way to reduce the reverb, other than simply keeping the intensity knob at a low setting, might be to increase the value of the cathode bias resistor for the 12AT7 reverb-driver, and maybe remove the bypass cap. You are the first person ever to ask how to reduce reverb :)

11.5W idle plate dissipation is still relatively high for a grid biased 6v6 class AB push pull amp.. An old 6v6gt tube has a max plate dissipation at 12W.. So the amp before your modifation was biased to Class A levels.. In honesty it sounded like a hot biased amp.. Aim for 8.5W ide plate dissipation.. The only thing saving the output tubes is the wimpy power transformer.. Classcitone has a replacement PT with a max current of 70mA at 650VAC on the high voltage line feeding the two 6v6 tubes and the 4 preamp tubes. So it can't really draw much more current than what the amp was drawing from the get go.. I recently fiddled with bias on my EL34 equipped 50W tube combo. The schematic showed -31V on hte grid with 400V on the plates.. I had some EHX EL34 in there.. CHanged the bias voltage from -36V to -31V:. MEassured voltage drop on the OT. .. yeicks.. 3V over 49 ohm = 61mA.. 61mA with a plate voltage of 400V is around 24.5W idle dissipation. An EL34 has a max plate dissipation of 25W. THe tubes were definately very hot and I heard certain crinkley sounds from the tubes. I then changed the bias voltage to -35V and have around 18.2W on one tube and 17W on the other tube.. Still a bit hot at around 70% of max dissipation.. THe problem is that after two hours of playing the sound starts to become worse.. More bass but a lot more wolly..A littele harsher on the high mids... The PCB mounted EL34 tubs hanging upside down omits a lot of heat that heats up the chassis and parts.. maybe affecting this?? One problem though is wall voltage.. I get 240VAC instead of 230VAC or 4.3% higher than spec. NOt much but my heater voltage is a little high (6.83V) or around 8.5% higher than the 6.3V onthe tube schematic. Still within the 10% deviation. But on this old amp in this video,, check filmaent voltage also.. It might be off signaling that the wall voltage needs to be lowered.. A voltage regulator is not a bad idea if you have an old tube amp.. Love your videos by the way
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your detailed comments, Dansk. I agree with all you say and generally do grid bias at 70% of max PD. In this case, the owner was accustomed to moderate volume use with early breakup, and I didn't want to alter the performance characteristics of the amp too much. In retrospect, I would probably have biased a bit lower, but he has received the amp and loves the way it sounds. Recall that virtually all vintage Fender amps came with outrageously high-biased output tubes, and thus much of the "vintage Fender tone" was the result of this fact. People grew up hearing the early breakup and the overdriven sound became desirable rather than an indicator of a circuit aberration.

My sincere advice, to you and everyone else who deals with amps this size and weight and above, is to always use wheels when moving. I have been a player for 58+ years, and played in weekend bands for 35 years. Trust me when I say that lifting and moving these things will ultimately take a toll on your spinal column, specifically your discs which will compact. Once that happens, all kinds of painful things begin to afflict you, some of which, there are no answers (relief) for. Otherwise ... nice amp! I've had no experience with PR's ... so I don't know. Just wondering ... that's a LOT of distortion for a volume setting of 2.5. In my estimation, that should be clear as a bell. Speaker blown? The trem also starts sooner with that extra resistor wired in.

Ralph Rivera, I have a 1966 Princeton Reverb that I acquired in the late 80's. The rectifier tube was replaced with a solid state made by Groove Tube which was recommended by an amp tech in the 90's and has been in the amp since resent; meaning the amp has sounded good thru the years until recent months when it suddenly loses power and volume intermittently. I can raise the guitar volume and hit the strings hard and the sound will pop back to normal and may play and sound good for awhile but it reverts back to losing power and volume. After researching on KZbin I started watching your videos on amp repair particularly the one about the Princeton Reverb AA764 circuit which required an GZ34 rectifier tube. I replaced the solid state rectifier with a GZ34 and the rest of the tube with new good quality vintage tubes. Again it would sound good (even better) for a while but the intermittent problem returns. Can you please make some suggestions or would you consider repairing the amp when you are able. Thank you Uncle Doug!

My UPS woes, I purchased a vintage 68 era mustang and twin reverb that had spent their entire life together in California. I'm in SC. The seller paid to have UPS pack. They put the mustang in a wardrobe box. It took a hit so hard that the headstock punched through the side of the case. Luckily the neck is ok. The twin was placed in the middle of a large square box. Because the 50 lb center of gravity was flopping around you couldn't pick up the box. I witnessed the driver roll the box with vintage twin out of the truck. When I unboxed it the case of course was smashed, cracked and lose. One spot was hit so hard that the wood splintered. I took it apart, reglued it all the best I could. I had to cut and peel back the tolex to get glue in and reinforced with screws. glued the tolex back down that is worse for wear. I had to rebuild the splintered corner with epoxy wood compound. Luckily the amp worked. But yeah packing yourself is much better. Also I found the competitive rates purchasing shipping on line is better than what they will give you in the store. Thanks for videos.

However, if I remove the V1 tube to increase gain in V2 I get a funky distortion when volume is over 3. The kind of distortion that is not good. Like when a stereo system amp is distorting. Can you point me to a place to start troubleshooting?

My advice is quite simple, RB: Don't remove a tube and expect and amp to function well without it. If you want more pre-amp gain, use a boost/driver pedal.

While I do NOT at all agree with the twisting of the leads of cathode bypass caps for true restoration work of vintage amps, I can absolutely agree how poor the DeOxit delivery issue. Thanks for the Nu-Trol cleaner recommendation. I am so done purchasing DeOxit cans of any type, because up to half the product is wasted. I just want a drop here and there when possible. :)

Thanks for both comments, BL. The DeOxit aerosol cans do indeed waste at least half of the product.

If you really want to hear a blackface Princeton Reverb in all its glory, find Wilson Pickett s cover of "Hey Jude". It was cut at Muscle Shoals, and the guitar player is Duane Allman. Pay particular attention to the lead break on the outro as the song fades at the end. World class! It was actually Brother Duane's idea to have Pickett cover the song, and he not only had a no.1 with it, but all of the Beatles have said that they loved it. Give a listen.

Hi Uncle Doug--I listened closely to the amp again, and as before, the sound just didn't seem right. Given your expert repair of the electronics, I wonder if that old speaker is dying a slow death. Have you tried plugging in a different speaker? Have you inspected the amp's output on your oscilloscope? I suppose the problem could be the microphone in your video recorder, also.
@UncleDoug

It may be the camera microphone, R. I hurried the sound demo a bit so I could get the amp packed and shipped, and did not review the video scenes until after returning from FedEx.

The extra wires to the speaker could just have been to send something else to the speaker, though they they didn't go through the amp input I don't know, maybe someone was playing along to the radio 😂

When installing the 3-wire power cord and bypassing the ground switch, did you remove the "death capacitor", or did it not have one?

I now tend to remove "Death Caps", especially in customer gear, Mark. Better safe than sorry.

@@UncleDoug I understand that, and have seen you do it previously. But it seems you skipped over that step in this particular case. And someone seeing this (updating to a grounded power cable) might not be aware of its inherent danger. I wasn't until I saw your video on it.

At 10:21, ESR measurement on that cap is not quite correctly done; it appears that the ESR meter's neg lead is grounded to the chassis somewhere, with the alligator clip + lead connected to the positive lead on the cap. This is fine for every cap in the amp except this one, since the negative lead has a 47-ohm (fairly suspicious number, I'd say, in view of the reading...) between the cap and chassis ground. I prefer to walk both test leads around to all the electrolytics to eliminate any chance of bogus readings. Also - although it is sometimes hard to tell when listening to a non-studio recording - the dwell time on the reverb sounded awfully short to me. Did anyone open up the tank bag and eyeball the springs? Sometimes - after 50+ years - the foam inside the tank rots away and particles of it become stuck to the springs, damping them considerably. Other stuff...dust willies, cat hair (ahem) and so forth can find its way into the tank, even though it is inside a vinyl bag.

24K? That 22K 10% was at the upper range of it's tolerance. I wonder what the dissipation would be if it really was 22K. (Or if the amp had "old-time" line voltage.)

Many people like to negatively comment on UPS. This is very common. The truth is, you get what you pay for. Often times people fail to mention the fact that the sender is also responsible for choosing the appropriate packaging method for the item they're shipping. If you pay a bit more UPS will get you better packing. That puts them right around the same cost as the FedEx ground. I have had all kinds of items shipped by UPS with absolutely no problems.

In my experience, UPS is always more expensive than FedEx, and always at least two days slower. It isn't that we "like" to make negative comments about UPS, Joe, it's that they often leave us no choice.

Unc!! Another nice one!! Have you ever "discretely" marked the replacement date on components or document the work performed to let the next tech know when components were replaced??? Just a curious dead president..... Nice work on the rat rod, too! Although, I am six foot seven inches tall & I needed that leg room!!!
@UncleDoug

I have not, Abe. To be honest, no pun intended, I simply leave the diagnosis up to the next tech, if there is one. After all, even new components can fail. If you bought the car, I would remove the seat modification :)

One more comment, I looked to see if you or anyone has posted a video on recovering the Fender standard grill clothe on the baffle boards. Seems like many could benefit from that. . I knew Sam Hutton very well . You may recall he made many of the cabinets when he worked at Fender for Leo. I know you have posted for tweed amps recover but didn’t find anything on the grill clothe for vintage Fender amps. I know your skills have done this before. Thanks again.

I did a really challenging save of the original grill cloth on a Princeton Reverb many years ago, David. See if you can find it in my video list.

Airbags! Arrgh! Those stupid airbags tend to leak air or pop, and then the object Inside the box becomes an unguided missile with no padding around it. Never use air bags for packing anything fragile, especially something as heavy as an amplifier. Unfortunately, the majority of online sellers and shippers use air bags for packing material all the time.

Who gonna drive the roadster? Jack or Puss Puss? You might need to extend the pedals control higher up still, and make a groove or hole to accommodate the tails of the aforementioned beasts when sitting upright. BTW - nice amp! Looks like somebody bought this years ago and just put it away...
