Ryan sent us some custom slugs that he made, along with the 12ga. adapters. These were machined out of delrin (Polyoxymethylene), and have a carbide core. Let's test them out!

When I grow up I want to have my own machine shop, gun permit and slo-mo camera so I can experiment with various slug shapes in a fast make-test-modify closed loop. I'm only 54 so maybe in my 70s.

I'm almost 30 and I'm still the youngest in our local Scale RC boat club. You won't believe what the retired guys can do. They can machine and tune parts to perfection only the young ones can still dream. In Japan they always say it'll take at least 10 years to Master the basics. And they're just making sushi. LOL compared to a thousand part mechanical stuff. LOL

This slug reminds me very much of the US WW2 HVAP shells that tanks had, a high density core surrounded by a much lighter material that was designed to discard from the penetrator upon impact. it's a shame that the ballistic gods didn't shine their light upon this shell and make it fly 100% true. Amazing design and shooting, love the vids

It's basically a shotgun take on the old WW2 APCR rounds. The tip breaking free on impact and being the part that penetrates is how they're supposed to work. The modern evolution of what this was based on is the APFSDS round where everything but the penetrating rod and some stabilising fins breaks free as soon as it leaves the barrel.

Looks like it's based on the old APCR projectiles tanks used to fire. Those projectiles were known for high penetration but that penetration tapers off over a long distance. It was also know that these also have a small spalling effect once penetrating armor.
@mavrik104
@mavrik104 6 жыл бұрын
Pull the penetrator back into the shot a bit and I'd bet you'd get a better balanced round..... from most cutaways I've seen of APCR the penetrator almost never goes to the tip of the round or goes the whole length
@zchen27
@zchen27 6 жыл бұрын
That's because there is space for a ballistic cap. The cap allows the projectile to "stick" to the armor when striking at high speeds instead of bouncing off or shattering.
@user-td1zo3tv9p
@user-td1zo3tv9p 6 жыл бұрын
As someone who had a career as a "Tanker" (Loader, Driver, Gunner Tank Commander) I am unfamiliar with this "APCR" you write of. Maybe you meant "APFSDS" or "APDS" (Armored Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot and Armor Piercing Discarding Sabot respectively)? If so, the APFSDS "Long Rod" or "Golden BB" was a very long, solid rod constructed of depleted uranium as was the shorter APDS, although some were made of very heavy metals I don't recall. But NONE of them "stuck" to the armor or other target they impacted on. They achieved their penetration by pure kinetic energy and upon impact would literally "bore" a hole through its target. "Spalling" was a byproduct on the exit side of the target where molten metal would accompany the projo through the target as well as shearing off chunks from the inside wall. And because the depleted uranium was highly pyroific (sp?) when superheated upon impact, the base metal and all it touched became molten liquid and set fire to all it touched, especially as the materials bounced around inside the tank or other hard target. Anyway, just hoping to set the record straight from someone who has BTDT and has the t-shirt AND the scars to prove it. Overnout for now. 😊 EDIT: If it is meant by sticking to the target upon impact and penetration, we had another round called a "HEAT" round or "High Explosive Anti Tank" which had a "cap" on the hollow stick-like object on the leading point. This cap covered a crystal, which when crushed emitted an electrical charge that ignited a shaped charge in the main portion of the round projo. The shaped charge emitted a PLASMA-HOT jet of molten gasses which literally burned and blew a hole through the target. And, not unlike the AP projo's, the exit spot from impact would have not only this small plasma jet blow through the target metal but a huge amount of Spalling would also be ejected inside the target. Regardless of which projo struck the target, assuming penetration, the occupants were as good as D.E.A.D. and it wouldn't be a pretty death considering the amount of metal bouncing around the interior and the fires which would start, too. Then there was the "HEP" round which looked like a big streamlined but blunt bullet. "HEP" stands for "High Explosive, Plastic" and it would splash and flatten against the outside metal of its intended target and explode. There would be a shockwave that would resonate through the target metal and a "plate" of metal would shatter off the opposite point of impact, showering the internal occupants with very hot and large shards of metal. Again, a gruesome way to die. Done for now. Again. 😁

Here is an idea... Part of the burning of the powder, is the weight of the slug. The inertia of the slug, plugs the barrel. And allows the powder to be ignited. So when loading a light slug, the slug leaves the barrel before all the powder is burnt. So , in order to drive a light slug at higher speeds, you must use a faster burning powder. I hope this helps. Thanks for sharing your videos. And keep up the good work.

A close friend of mine who owns FMCO out of Medford, OR makes and sells 12 ga. Flechette shotgun rounds. I remember the day in 1994 when he unloaded the Vietnam era flechette machine he bought at an auction, it’s basically a nail maker but makes fins on the end instead of a nail head. John Flanagan doesn’t do online things since he’s sort of old school but he used to make some beautiful tactical gear, I wore one of his tactical vests during the Gulf War. John designed a special ‘sabot’ wad for the shotgun round and he molds them in his garage.

This reminds me of a specific airgun pellet, the .177 crosman powershot. A plastic sabot arpund a non deforming sub caliber inner projectile weighing only 5.4 grains. Despite its small size and weight, It has a fascinating capability to penetrate targets you wouldnt even think possible with an airgun. The sabot discards upon impact *almost* every time and that inner projectile sails on through. Above 1200fps or higher, im not even sure my backstop could stop it
