When you play the 30th anniversary hack, you just can't go back. Also, I just noticed, Pitfall Harry DOES have 4 frames of animation for walking, 2 for when his hands and feet are at the same level, and 2 for when they go back and forward, alternating. Problem is, the shape of the sprite is exactly the same, and the positions of the hands are the same for both frames, only which hand is in these spots alternate, so it seems like it only has 2 frames for the walk cycle. The only reason I noticed is because it looked like a 'third hand' seemed to appear in one of the frames. When I inspected, it's actually just a canteen or something, colored the same as his hands. It's only in one frame because it's 'obstructed' by the arm of the same side in the other frame.

Let's put every kind of obstacle we could possibly think of in the very beginning of the game. You know, I'm disappointed. Couldn't there have been lava on top of the spikes, with fire sharks swimming in it? Couldn't there have been more spikes coming from the sides ready to close in and squash me while stabbing at the same time? How about some laser cannons and upside-down volcanoes? I know it probably has something to do with how big the stages are, but does anyone notice how the load times in this game are somewhat longer than usual for an NES/FC game? I counted, around 5 seconds at most and 3 at the earliest after the "READY" screen cuts to black

You're right to think this isn't Mario. Although the sprite bears a striking resemblance to Mario being a spelunker, the man you see here is called Pitfall Harry.

A year too late but that's because the NES/FC can only scroll one direction at a time by default, and this game was made before special chips were made to allow the NES to scroll in multiple directions. As such, games like this had to use special programming tricks to allow the camera to move in more than one direction.
