Cool video, some pretty funny points too. Just curious because I have 2 of the same, is that VESC on a heatsink? And are you really running it at 100 battery amps per side? That would be really impressive. I know it’s been years but I will send you a Bluetooth module if you would see if you actually reach the theoretical numbers. Just fyi lower kv motors aren’t always more efficient, it’s true that they waste less just spinning themselves but bc they have thinner windings they A. waste more power under high load and B. can’t make as much power without quitting or saturating.
@PirateWasHere17 күн бұрын
Yes it was over 100A, 25mm copper wire was hot, and XT90 was soft most of the time ;) Low KV are always better , because you can more precisely controll end speed/power . I guess what you mean is that thinner and longer wire creates higher IR which is true, but you can not consider motor as a wire energy transfer system ! , it's about electro magnetic field . Lower KV means lower amps and higher voltage to achieve the same rpm, which is way more efficient compare to low voltage and high amperage because with wIth higher voltage , IR is lower. That is why home power sockets has 110-220V not 12V, also HQ Emoto bikes uses high voltage battery packs 140V++ and low capacity 20ah. Basically high KV motors are good for fans, planes, drones , where high rpm is needed. Have a great weekend
@SC-rk6zt15 күн бұрын
@@PirateWasHere If your board is still running, can I send you a VESC Bluetooth module so you can screen record telemetry? I will even cover postage. I have 2 of these VESCs on 8awg wire, 8mm bullet connectors and a 21700 12S10P welded with 0.3mm nickel I’m willing to push to 500A. Yes lower kv motors use a higher voltage which is better but it also lowers your top speed meaning you have to gear longer. Higher kv motors need a larger gear reduction. If a high and low kv power train is geared to the same speed and running at the same speed then the motors will be at the same voltage. The only way lower kv motors are running on a higher voltage is if you have a lower top speed than high kv motors. Lower rpm setups make more heat under high torque, extremely high rpm setups waste energy just spinning the motors but waste very little making torque. I know with 200mm+ wheels it’s hard to gear them down much so sometimes lower kv is needed. Thank you for the response and you definitely have a great understanding of motors, have a great week.
@PirateWasHere15 күн бұрын
Let me share some of my experience, so you will understand me a bit more: Lower KV means Higher torque, so overally better acceleration , especially from 0. Higher voltage lower IR, IR means internal resistance , which in this case we can see it as a change energy to heat. Higher voltage , creates greater Magneticfield B= µ0I/2πR ** higher RPM means more friction, so it does not only change energy into a heat but also this heat will chaeg/damage structure of the metal. If you will have some free time, read about what is energy and how electrons are involved . I like this topic , we can understand why things seems to be " bigger " and higher temperature , and why structure is more " fragile ". Watt is Voltage*Amperage. So with this knowledge tell me, what will " Waste " more energy into a heat at 1000W, 1000V *1A or 1V*1000A ? As a simple user , you should avoid as much as possible any gearing , any friction & moving parts , means problems. In any system , geared ir direct , lower KV motor will be more efficient and has more torque at lowest or highest power. Ofcourse there is more to it, like EV cars use geared system , because of motor size / placement, also higher kv motor with geared system helps to spread torque forces BUT this is different story. No idea where did you get from " Lower rpm setups make more heat under high torque, extremely high rpm setups waste energy just spinning the motors " , do you understand this is NOT DIESEL engine ?. If you are not using ESC system to control precisely RPM, then motor at highest rpm barerly use any energy ( otherwise you will have infinite max speed ). If ESC uses RPM motor control system then it slowing down motor RPM to achieves expected value and only then it's using lots of energy ( speed up / slow down , also you need decent high frequency controller for it). ** Still higher KV will waste more energy due to IR and bearing friction. As a good designer you have to calculate what end speed do you need. Ebike hub motors use around ~8KV ;) , ofcourse geared hub motors has higher kv ( ~30KV ) and it can even greater torque but there is a price for it ;). I don't have this board anymore, but if you want some real power 10P could not enough, in reality you will short battery which LI IONs doesn't like. 10P at best scenario will delivery maybe 400A BUT only when fully charged and for couple sec while LIPO is a powerhouse ;) Cheers
@PirateWasHere15 күн бұрын
@SC-rk6zt BTW 4WD esk8 is way to go !, more stable , has higher torque and 50% lower stress on the parts. ** Yes , it will need 10% more energy to do the same range/ distance but Man , it's worth it every penny :) !
@SC-rk6zt14 күн бұрын
@ Yes higher kv motors make less torque but they spin to a higher speed so you can gear them down more while still getting the desired speed. Agreed? Because of this they regain their torque per amp at the wheels. The only difference is the motor spins faster and has thicker wires. Agreed? Your whole thing about the higher voltage isn’t from using a lower kv motor directly, but being geared for a lower speed. Agreed? The higher/lower motor rpm setups is to do with copper vs iron losses, a very common concept in the diy esk8 community. Higher kv motors have less resistance so they make less heat making torque but as you know a motor takes some power to spin even unloaded, and a high kv motor on a high voltage will melt in minutes at max rpm. Yes higher kv motors have more losses in bearings but they have a massive lower iR. I don’t understand some parts of your message, but you know max motor rpm is based off kv and battery voltage right? (and field weakening sometimes). That flipsky isn’t even taking 200 battery amps, nevermind 400-500. This 12S10P will reach more than 30hp which is way more than I could possible need and the sheer capacity alone will make it last longer under any condition than a small amount of LiPos as powerful as I know they are. Sorry if the “agreed” seems condescending, I’m just trying to work out where exactly the disagreement is.
