I agree, there is a lot of power required for a hill climb and your build looks a lot more capable and yet affordable than most I've seen. I bought a pre built board with 3,300 watts and it's great, but there is always a demand for more torque or general acceleration power when going through trails and hills. Yours exceeds the milestone by 3 yet less OK's sturdier than mine. Also, hot swapping a empty battery is perfect.

what's your experience with sensor motors vs sensorless? im told sensor have more power at bottom but can have more issues, but with the new dual vest 6.6 plus I would assume sensorless is the way to go! what do you think the sweet spot is for kv rating? I was thinking of 130! I have 170 now but never ever use the top end.

I built the patriot (for the most part) and the aluminum trucks base plate cracked twice already on the front truck. My first time going through some rough dirt and a pebble got under the belt and bent the motor shaft. I need a closed belt mounting system and maybe to spend a little extra on MBS trucks or something but that changes the price game significantly. However, I do not feel these trucks are a safe bet for this power and speed. I wanted to love it, just need a few modifications to make it sick. I did opt to buy cheap bindings, very helpful for sharp turning and off road. Did I mention the deck is heavy as all hell. This deck is really stiff and heavy. Oh and the springs on the trucks.. yeah well after some heavy riding they start bowing. Next thing they do... pop out. If you lean hard once you get decent, the board leans right into the pulleys and will eat a little notch into the board but no biggie. It has a few serious problems to address but for the price... This was my only option for a real off road board.

The backfire ranger comparison is interesting. I'm looking at one not for total AT performance, but as a commuter. The hubs are attractive to me mostly because I want to be able to push the board sometimes and because they are quiet. The wheels look big enough not to be bumpy on a sidewalk. Has anyone found hubs that are powerful enough for a hill or trail? Old hoverboard motors are too weak, unfortunately.

My battery box is on top and the best they have, I fsec4. Is in a back waterproof box, like most high-end boards from Europe videos. Witch take mbs mountain board to a hole new level. Super cool DIY! Not sure the math is right in the title on this one. The specs for the motors are Max Power: 3250 Watts. So, x 2 = 6500 Watts, not 9000 Watts. Straight from your link to the motors. Why isn't Trampa in the comparison? Thanks for sharing.

For people who do not know much about diy esk8... when building a mountain/off road board like this, one should use lower kv motors which increases torque but reduces top speed. Instead of using the 190kv motors like in the video, which have a great top speed, do not unlock the full potential of this board. I would like to see you try to go 40 mph on a trail like you show in the video... you should go with 149 kv motors to still have a good top speed and have a lot more torque. I know flipsky sent the 190 kv motors for you to use but lower kv motors work much better on off road terrain.
@ATLracing
@ATLracing 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure this is entirely correct. Keep in mind that with an ideal speed controller, a lower Kv motor would provide no torque advantage over a higher Kv motor (even with the same batteries). As far as I know, lower Kv motors only benefit systems with current-limited ESCs, and these VESCS are some of the beefiest out there (as are the batteries). FLIPSKY claims a burst rating of 400A per controller, which I believe would saturate any 6374 motor. If that rating is to be believed, lower Kv motors may offer little-to-no benefit. And as you can see in the video, torque is clearly not an issue here. Has anyone tested this empirically?
@T-Sav
@T-Sav 5 жыл бұрын
Yes tested multiple times in FPV and eskates - lower kv = more torque , you can increase/decrease torque also by using different gearing. But KV = as we use it refers to the rpm constant of a motor - it is the number of revolutions per minute that the motor will turn when 1V (one Volt) is applied with no load attached to the motor, the less revs per volt means each rev has more volts to push the board with
@zachohanlon3517
@zachohanlon3517 5 жыл бұрын
Douglas Page while you might be theoretically correct, I did not see any place in the video where the board was motor limited. I did see a spot that was traction limited, and SkateMetrics described that you could break the rear wheels free very easily, which doesn’t strike me as being anywhere close to motor limited. If you wanted to increase effective power on this setup I think you would need wider wheels or four wheel drive. 149kv motors would just make it more traction limited while decreasing the top speed.
@T-Sav
@T-Sav 5 жыл бұрын
@@zachohanlon3517 Zach - he is theoretically correct and also correct in reality. He didn't mention the board looked limited in the video at anypoint he was just making a suggestion regarding the KV. how can wider wheels increase the power???? How would 149kv reduce the traction of the wheels? I agree it would reduce top speed, but he did say when will you go top speed 40KMH ? The video even states they never use full speed.... Why have the ability to go 40 with less torque. id rather the able to go 30-35 and have a bit more power low end. I have a trampa e-board and only ever hit about 28 MPH, then again im new to it so could step this up who knows.
@ATLracing
@ATLracing 5 жыл бұрын
@@zachohanlon3517 My point is that with a 100% efficient ESC, Kv ratings and torque are completely unrelated. A higher Kv motor will indeed provide less torque for a given amount of current than a lower Kv motor (by definition). However, because the lower Kv motor's back EMF will be proportionally diminished, an ideal ESC will be able to provide more current to it, without drawing more from the batteries. Of course, a real ESC's output current is limited, but useful current in the motor may also be limited by magnetic saturation. In a situation where an ESC can push a motor of a given size to its saturation point, it stands to reason that swapping in a lower Kv motor wouldn't actually improve torque, and would only reduce top speed. But the real world is full of nonidealities, and this reasoning may overlook other complications. That's why I'm curious if someone has tested the relationship between Kv and torque with a setup of the Patriot's caliber.

Think of motor and ESC ratings as suggestions; they don't actually put a hard-cap on performance the way batteries do. If you managed to run this setup at peak power for an extended period of time, the motors would undoubtedly overheat. However, with acceleration this strong, it's impossible to apply full throttle for more than a fraction of a second without reaching dangerous speeds (or more likely being thrown on your ass), so it's a bit of a non-issue. This is perhaps an over-simplification, as a motor's size can hard-cap performance by non-thermal means, but that's a discussion for another day.

They look like L-FASTER trucks and wheels from AliExpress. Certainly not the best. The bushes flog out the hanger quickly. I used bearing retaining compound. but the pivot pin is also wearing out the tube so must use a heap of PTFE lube to fix the squeaking. The wheel bearings arent much chop. On full lean there isnt much retaining the springs I have had them pop out regularly when trails get really tight. Solved that with silicone adhesive and cable ties. decks are very common about $50.

Nice video again guys, disagree with your 9000W rating though (but I do understand it sounds cool in a video title). Ultimately more than 4kW through an electric skateboard platform is just silliness. I've calculated and it's like going 30 mph up a 20 degree incline for a 100 kg person. There is pretty much a 0% chance the Flipsky dual ESC can push 100 amps continuous through both motors and even if it could, the winding resistance of the motors is 50 mOhm. At 100 amps the motors are going to heat at 500W so they would melt in about 30 seconds or less. Can I send you guys a focbox unity to review? I designed it and I'd love for you to see how it stacks up. Simplifies builds and our new app makes programming it safe and easy. Product page here if you're curious: www.enertionboards.com/focbox-speed-controller/focbox-unity-dual-motor-foc-controller-esc/
@jessepatterson8897
@jessepatterson8897 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's just for the ratings. There are lots of practical reasons 18650s work better. They are slightly more strudy, lower discharge rates also mean more cycles and longer range. Just add more in serial until the esc or vesc can't take it. Still, i would love to compare this to my 12s Kaly in terms of performance.
@skatemetric627
@skatemetric627 5 жыл бұрын
No doubt our rating is a tad optimistic, although probably less so than most advertised esk8 power figures. Keep in mind, however, that delivering peak power for 30 seconds was not a design goal for this build (30 seconds with the throttle pegged on this board would take you to the moon :D). We'd definitely be excited to get our hands on a FOCBOX Unity. If you could shoot us an email at our business address (listed in the about section of our channel), we'd be happy to coordinate that with you.

@@jessepatterson8897 That's not correct. The LiPo batteries we use provide 532.8Wh, which puts them on par with a 12s4p 30Q configuration. In other words, range is not a problem. Dual vescs cant even produce 9kW. They have a 100A Phase amp Software limit. These flipsky vescs cant even get close to. If you are lucky you might be able to pull 80 battery amps with 100 on the phases, per vesc. With a 12S system thats a 43V. 80x2x43 thats 6.8kW That is by far the most Power possible with a dual vesc. Anything more is a lie

@@EnnTomi1 The price pays for the hi discharge lipo batteries, quality esc, and 190kv motors so you have 12 HORSEPOWER on an electic SKATABOARD. If that's not worth $1000 idk. Go buy some sleek X1 and get left in the dust

check my build for quality truck part and performance IMO the patriot is cheap and not reliable ! bad motor mount bad controller, bad truck, bad hub on the wheels seriously what you were thinking saying it is a beast ? and how the hell do you think you can push 9000w for instance : 42v x 100a = 4200w of power by motor if only you could run continuously but it is never the case and even then you at full battery on develop 8400W but those tiny motor suck balls at 3000w so be real and stop put some false description !

The parts are very reliable. We're right about at the two-year anniversary of the build, and everything's still working great (only the motors have required replacement). And you might want to redo your math, considering the board has TWO motors and runs 12S batteries lol.

Don't you think it's a bit sad you have to scavenge views from another channel so agressively?

And the truth. This platform is somewhat unreliable. *The trucks are unstable at high speeds (springs only, bounces around the place) *There are no replacement bushings available for these trucks *The bearings for these wheels are pressed in, hard to service/difficult to replace *The hubs are unbalanced, adds to high speed instability *the magnets of the Flipsky motors will come loose. High failure rate *belt slipping will happen with this motor mount design I owned the same platform with similar mods compared to the original chinese version. Switched to Trampa. Far superior. MBS will also provide a much better ride. The board in this video combines high-speed with an unstable platform = dangerous and unpredictable ride.

Don't be all drowning the Ranger. You probably never even rode one. Besides they have inhub motors so you don't get all the mud and dirt up in your belt drives. Let's see you come up with something more innovative besides a taklebox screwed on top of a $40 board.

If the Ranger had enough power to ride in mud that might have been a nice feature... shame.

The base of this build is a cheap china made board that is junk. The rest of the build is ok but still could be alot better.

rowley dell the skate parts are great. Still absolutely no failures months of very heavy abuse later. If you want to spend more time and money go right ahead, but if you're just going to thrash your board off the trail, it won't make much difference and you're not going to get anything more durable at the same price.
